Demonstrations in Latin Elegiac Verse (Classic Reprint) by William Henry Denham Rouse Pdf

Excerpt from Demonstrations in Latin Elegiac Verse The aim of this book is to show by examples the process of translation into Latin Elegiac Verse. Collections of 'fair copies' there are in plenty, and I should have been in no haste to add to their number; but this book is designed to show how the copies take shape out of chaos, why out of many possible renderings one is selected, what are the principles of the art. It is intended for the use of those who have worked through some elementary book, Penrose for instance, and are not ready to tackle the poems in Holden's collection. Such as these will, I hope, find benefit from reading the specimens here given; and they cannot fail to learn a great deal from the collection of Ovidian lines in the Introduction. The book may also in some degree help to make up for lack of a competent teacher, in the case of students who have none. Nor am I without hope that some teachers may find the book useful. Latin Erotic Elegy by Paul Allen Miller Pdf

This indispensable volume provides a complete course on Latin erotic elegy, allowing students to trace a coherent narrative of the genre's rise and fall, and to understand its relationship to the changes that marked the collapse of the Roman republic, and the founding of the empire. The book begins with a detailed and wide-ranging introduction, looking at major figures, the evolution of the form, and the Roman context, with particular focus on the changing relations between the sexes. The texts that follow range from the earliest manifestations of erotic elegy, in Catullus, through Tibullus, Sulpicia (Rome's only female elegist), Propertius and Ovid. An accessible commentary explores the historical background, issues of language and style, and the relation of each piece to its author's larger body of work. The volume closes with an anthology of critical essays representative of the main trends in scholarship; these both illuminate the genre's most salient features and help the student understand its modern reception.

Editing and Commenting on Statius' Silvae by Anonim Pdf

The Silvae by Statius dethroned Virgil from the Studio in Naples, fostered the creation of a new genre, offered a model for court poetry, and seduced the most prestigious Humanists in the most vibrant centres of Renaissance Italy and the Netherlands. The collection preserves magnificent buildings otherwise lost; speaks of stones otherwise unknown; and memorializes people, rituals, and social relationships that would have passed into oblivion in silence. This volume offers a fresh look into approaches to the Silvae by editors and commentators, both at the time of the rediscovery of the poems and today.

Tradition and Innovation in Hellenistic Poetry by Marco Fantuzzi,Richard Hunter Pdf

Hellenistic poets of the third and second centuries BC were concerned with the need both to mark their continuity with the classical past and to demonstrate their independence from it. In this revised and expanded translation of Muse e modelli: la poesia ellenistica da Alessandro Magno ad Augusto, Greek poetry of the third and second centuries BC and its reception and influence at Rome are explored allowing both sides of this literary practice to be appreciated. Genres as diverse as epic and epigram are considered from a historical perspective, in the full range of their deep-level structures, providing a different perspective on the poetry and its influence at Rome. Some of the most famous poetry of the age such as Callimachus' Aitia and Apollonius' Argonautica is examined. In addition, full attention is paid to the poetry of encomium, in particular the newly published epigrams of Posidippus, and Hellenistic poetics, notably Philodemus.
