The Ends of History? considers how, despite the fact that events in the past 20 years have called Francis Fukuyama’s infamous announcement of the end of history into question, the issue of the end of history is now a matter of renewed interest and debate. Two decades ago we were confronted by the end of the Soviet Union and collapse of the geo-political divisions that had defined much of the twentieth century. From this particular end, the ‘end of history’ was proclaimed. But is it still possible to argue that liberal democracy and free market capitalism are the final form of law and mode of production in human history? Recent events have called this thesis into question: from 9/11 and the War on Terror, to the current global economic collapse and looming ecological crises, it seems that history if far from over. And yet, oddly enough, the question of ‘the end’ has returned. For example, in the often predicted, but still uncertain, establishment of either a new international American Empire or a new era of International Law, and the global resurgence of religion as a dominant source of political identification. On the other hand, perhaps the ‘end’ is still yet to come, slowly accumulating, mustering at the periphery of the geo-political landscape and outside the productive sphere. Responses taking up these questions range from a return to Universalism, political theology, Messianism, and even the old specter of communism. This volume assesses these responses, exploring what is at stake in proclaiming ‘the end’ in the current historical moment. Is it a matter of reading the writing on the wall? Or is the proclamation itself a political act? Furthermore is there a desire for the ‘end’? In addressing these questions, the contributors to The Ends of History? confront the various ‘ends’ that we now live, and in so doing they open new lines of sight into the future.

The present work is the fourth volume of the twenty projected volumes of our Seminars of Jacques Derrida Series edited by Geoffrey Bennington and Peggy Kamuf. The work derives from an early phase of Derrida's teaching at the Ecole Normale Superieur at Ulm from 1964-5. In this course Derrida presents an almost surgically precise reading of Heidegger's Being and Time based on the original German text most of which had not yet been translated into French. The course thus marks the very beginning of the study of Heidegger's work in French higher education. It also heralds the analyses of Heidegger's work that Derrida would go on to propose, not only in the years immediately following, but also others that come much later. He frequently returned in subsequent published works to one particular paragraph of Sein und Zeit, (§72 on "thrownness"), so central to this 1964-5 course, and to another sustained exchange with Heidegger, whose central theme of inauthenticity is clearly broached here. One can also observe here how Derrida's thinking is settling into place and is elaborating its major operative concepts: "writing," "text," and "graft." On the other hand, the very term "deconstruction," explicitly proposed as a translation of Destruktion, is several times put aside here in favor of other translations such as "solicitation" and "shaking up," which will, with a few exceptions, not be retained in Derrida's thinking. It is only much later that Derrida will lay claim to the word "deconstruction" and develop it in numerous ways. The work is thus essential for scholars of Heidegger, French philosophy, and Derrida himself.

What are we to make of Jacques Derrida’s famous claim that “every other is every other,” if the other could also be an object, a stone or an elementary particle? Francis Fukuyama’s controversial 1992 book The End of History and the Last Man demonstrates an important aspect of creative thinking: the ability to generate hypotheses and create novel explanations for evidence. In the case of Fukuyama’s work, the central hypothesis and explanation he put forward were not, in fact, new, but they were novel in the academic and historical context of the time. Fukuyama’s central argument was that the end of the Cold War was a symptom of, and a vital waypoint in, a teleological progression of history. Interpreting history as “teleological” is to say that it is headed towards a final state, or end point: a state in which matters will reach an equilibrium in which things are as good as they can get. For Fukuyama, this would mean the end of “mankind’s ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government”. This grand theory, which sought to explain the end of the Cold War through a single overarching hypothesis, made the novel step of resurrecting the German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel’s theory of history – which had long been ignored by practical historians and political philosophers – and applying it to current events.

However widely—and differently—Jacques Derrida may be viewed as a "foundational" French thinker, the most basic questions concerning his work still remain unanswered: Is Derrida a friend of reason, or philosophy, or rather the most radical of skeptics?
