Development of a Digital Library based on Cloud Computing Model by Chimdi Walter Ndubuisi Pdf

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Information Management, , course: Communication Engineering, language: English, abstract: Over the years, there has been the need to improve the level of services provided by traditional libraries in the areas of resource accessibility and management. This is in a bid to address the challenges and inconveniences in accessing and managing the library resources. A viable means of achieving this purpose is by deployment of digital libraries. In this project, a digital library prototype based on cloud computing will be developed to demonstrate the viability of deploying and running cloud based digital libraries in Nigerian higher institutions, to curb the challenges encountered in accessing resources in traditional libraries by providing ubiquitous access to library resources. Developing the digital library will comprise of two design phases viz; developing the library website and designing a local intranet on which the website will be hosted. The website will be developed using web scripting and programming languages such as Hypertext Mark-Up Language (HTML), JavaScript, and Hypertext Pre-Processor (PHP) etc. while the local intranet is a network of computers and other Wi-Fi enabled digital devices and a wireless access point. The network will be configured and the digital library website hosted on a dedicated server which provides services to the user devices through the access point. At the end of this project, a prototype of cloud based digital library will be developed. On the library website, users can perform basic operations such as registering with the library and viewing the content of materials in the library collections. While the library administrator performs functions of book uploads and user authentication. This project, though demonstrated as a prototype, shows that deploying cloud based digital libraries in Nigerian higher institution will curb the challenges associated with traditional libraries.

Development of Digital Libraries by Deanna B. Marcum Pdf

Every year, leading librarians, scholars, and administrators from the United States are invited to give papers on important library-related topics at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology's Roundtable. From 1995 to 1999, some aspect of digital library development was the theme of the symposium, and the essays in this collection are all devoted to that topic. In these essays, some of the most innovative thinkers and practitioners discuss how digital libraries have been conceived and implemented in the United States. Insight into the policy, legal, and technical frameworks of digital libraries is given, while honest views of problems encountered in trying to integrate digital and traditional libraries are given. Finally, some of the essays explore how users are affected by digital library services.

User Studies for Digital Library Development by Milena Dobreva,Andy O'Dwyer,Pierluigi Feliciati Pdf

This landmark text captures a global cross-section of leading voices and provides a clear and coherent overview of the user studies domain and user issues in digital libraries. As the information environment becomes increasingly electronic, digital libraries have proliferated, but the focus has often been on innovations in technology and not the user. Although user needs have become a popular concept, in practice the users are rarely consulted in the development of services. Research and analysis of users is essential to fine-tune the content and approach of digital libraries to the diverging requirements and expectations of incredibly varied communities and to ensure libraries are effective, accessible and sustainable in the long term. Key topics include: • what is the place of user studies in digital libraries and what are the basic user study methods? • explaining user-centric studies, information behaviour and user experience studies • exploring user-study methods such as surveys, questionnaires, expert evaluation methods, eye tracking, deep log analysis, personae and ethnographic studies • critical issues around user studies such as evaluation of digital libraries, digital preservation, social media, the shift to mobile devices and ethics • user studies in specific types of institutions: libraries, archives, museums, audiovisual collections and art collections • the most popular questions and what to do next. Readership: Information professionals involved in supporting, developing or designing digital library services, researchers wanting to address the user dimension in their work and students on LIS and computer science courses who want to understand the importance of the user in information services.
