Hyperglycemia, Diabetes and Vascular Disease by Neil Ruderman,Joseph Williamson,Michael Brownlee Pdf

It is estimated that 1-5% ofthe world's population is affected by some form of diabetes. Patients with these disorders are highly likely to develop microvas cular pathology in the retina and glomerulus and they are at a 2--6-fold greater risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease than individuals without diabetes. In addition, hypertension is far more prevalent in patients with diabetes than in the general population. As a consequence of these complications, diabetes is a leading cause of blindness and renal failure in young and middle-aged adults and it is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease in the Western world. An understanding of the relationship of these vascular complications to diabetic hyperglycemia has become a critical issue for clinicians in recent years, since the prevalence of diabetes appears to be increasing dramatically world-wide. In addition, it is now possible to achieve improved glycemic control in many patients-although not without incurring other risks. This volume explores two principal hypotheses concerning these complications. One is that hyperglycemia underlies or at least contributes to the pathogenesis of both micro- and macrovascular disease in patients with diabetes. The other is that it does so by producing specific metabolic and biochemical alterations in the vascular wall that lead to abnormalities in its function and ultimately its structure.

Vascular Involvement in Diabetes by Dan Cheţa Pdf

Since the 1960s we have learned that cardiovascular complications and diabetes mellitus are closely intertwined: type 2 diabetes increases the likelihood of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and accelerated vascular disease. Thus the growing pandemic of diabetes worldwide is responsible for increasing death and disability from atherosclerotic vascular disease, the number one cause of death today. This publication spells out the enormity of the problem and the demographic forces at play. In the first part of the book the fundamental mechanisms responsible for vascular involvement in diabetes at the genetic, molecular, tissue, organ and organismal levels are described. The second part provides a detailed description of the various clinical aspects and the currently available therapeutic and preventive measures for diabetes, such as lifestyle changes, angiotensin II receptor blockers, biguanides and fibrates.

Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease by Aubie Angel,Naranjan S. Dhalla,Grant Pierce,Pawan K. Singal Pdf

Diabetes and cardiovascular disease together account for the largest portion of health care spending compared to all other diseases in Western society. This work seeks to provide an understanding of the causes of diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. As this understanding becomes more widely appreciated, it will serve as a foundation for evidence-based care and wider acceptance of sound science. The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, held in Winnipeg, in June 1999, was organized to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers dedicated to further knowledge amongst researchers, care givers, and the managers of the health system. The invited speakers submitted their works for publication, which serves as the basis for this book. Major themes include: epidemiology of diabetes mellitus, metabolic risk factors in diabetes and cardiovascular disease, hypertension in diabetes mellitus, cardiac function in diabetes, glycemic control and improved cardiovascular function, diabetes management, and endothelial function in diabetes.

Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 5) by Dorairaj Prabhakaran,Shuchi Anand,Thomas A. Gaziano,Jean-Claude Mbanya,Rachel Nugent Pdf

Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Cardiovascular Disease by C. Sabanayagam,T.Y. Wong Pdf

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common microvascular complication, has consistently been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This book provides complete coverage of DR as a potential marker for CVD in those with diabetes. It succinctly reviews the epidemiological and pathogenic links of DR to various cardiovascular events including stroke, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and mortality. Furthermore, it discusses the usefulness of DR in CVD risk prediction and cardiovascular safety of anti-VEGF therapy in diabetic patients. There are insights from contemporary diabetic trials that demonstrated the enhanced cardiovascular benefit of novel glucose lowering therapy. It also highlights the potential of novel retinal imaging to predict CVD and its risk factors using the state-of-the art artificial intelligence-based deep learning systems. This book will be an invaluable resource for specialists translating research findings into clinical care, including those in cardiology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, and general practitioners. IT will also be of interest to public health practitioners, researchers, graduate students, and biotech companies interested in developing retinal image-based diagnostic and prognostic tools.
