Mathematical Macroevolution in Diatom Research by Janice L. Pappas Pdf

MATHEMATICAL MACROEVOLUTION IN DIATOM RESEARCH Buy this book to learn how to use mathematics in macroevolution research and apply mathematics to study complex biological problems. This book contains recent research in mathematical and analytical studies on diatoms. These studies reflect the complex and intricate nature of the problems being analyzed and the need to use mathematics as an aid in finding solutions. Diatoms are important components of marine food webs, the silica and carbon cycles, primary productivity, and carbon sequestration. Their uniqueness as glass-encased unicells and their presence throughout geologic history exemplifies the need to better understand such organisms. Explicating the role of diatoms in the biological world is no more urgent than their role as environmental and climate indicators, and as such, is aided by the mathematical studies in this book. The volume contains twelve original research papers as chapters. Macroevolutionary science topics covered are morphological analysis, morphospace analysis, adaptation, food web dynamics, origination-extinction and diversity, biogeography, life cycle dynamics, complexity, symmetry, and evolvability. Mathematics used in the chapters include stochastic and delay differential and partial differential equations, differential geometry, probability theory, ergodic theory, group theory, knot theory, statistical distributions, chaos theory, and combinatorics. Applied sciences used in the chapters include networks, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and dynamical systems. The volume covers a diverse range of mathematical treatments of topics in diatom research. Audience Diatom researchers, mathematical biologists, evolutionary and macroevolutionary biologists, paleontologists, paleobiologists, theoretical biologists, as well as researchers in applied mathematics, algorithm sciences, complex systems science, computational sciences, informatics, computer vision and image processing sciences, nanoscience, the biofuels industry, and applied engineering.

An introduction to Ellef Ringnes Island, Prince Patrick Islandand Northern Ellesmere Island. From the preface This project was initiated in 1998 with the development of a surface diatomcalibration set for selected regions from the Arctic Islands.Under the study surface sediments, mosses, rock and otheravailable habitats were studied from 91 ponds and lakes. It became clear that the diatoms observed were new or undocumented. Detailed taxonomic studies were done at the Canadian Museum of Nature using SEM generated images andthe extensive Library. A must have for research in the Arctic

Freshwater Algae of North America by John D. Wehr,Robert G. Sheath,J. Patrick Kociolek Pdf

Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies

Freshwater Diatoms from Northern Québec and Labrador (Canada) by Marie-Andrée Fallu,Nancie Allaire,Reinhard Pienitz Pdf

The freshwater diatom flora from arctic and subarctic regions of North America remains poorly known. The aim of this investigation is to improve our knowledge of diatoms in lakes from eastern subarctic Canada, and to provide a stronger foundation for the use of diatoms in limnological and palaeolimnological studies. To this end, we analysed the modern diatom assemblages in surficial sediments from 123 lakes in northern Québec and Labrador. The two study transects in Jamésie-Hudsonie (data set including 59 lakes and 38 environmental variables) and in Québec-Labrador (data set consisting of 64 lakes and 29 environmental variables) extend over a vast area from the boreal forest in the south to arctic tundra conditions in the north. Of a total of 516 diatom taxa in the Jamésie-Hudsonie data set, 218 species were used for the development of a transfer function for the reconstruction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). In the Québec.Labrador data set, two inference models were developed for the reconstruction of water colour and alkalinity based on 128 of 303 diatom taxa. The majority of taxa belonging to this surprisingly species-rich boreal-subarctic diatom flora are illustrated in photographic plates, accompanied by a short description of the distribution of each taxon.
