Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 21 by Harris E. Starr Pdf

Excerpt from Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 21: Supplement One (to December 31, 193) Arbor, Mich., by whom he had a son, Waldo. She died in 1903 and in 1905 he married Elsie Verona Maples of Detroit, who survived him without issue. He died from an undiagnosed cause in his seventy-second year in his Brook line, Mass, home. His body was cremated and the ashes were placed in Mount Auburn ceme tery, Cambridge. Through much of life he wore a mustache and pointed beard which, particularly after he turned gray, added to a distinguished appearance. It is safe to say that no one else had held such responsible positions in the two ex tremes of sensationalism and idealism in Ameri can journalism. A Pictorial History and Trekking Guide of the Wilderness Road by Daniel W. Weidner EdD DLitt Pdf

This book is about the history of the Wilderness Road and a trekking guide with photos. It presents the background of how Daniel Boone and a group of some thirty men blazed a trail by way of three states to connect Kingsport, Tennessee, to Middlesboro, Kentucky, and became an important roadway in modern-day industrial United States. Its beginning opened the east to the west for what was the early pioneering spirit of pioneers that settled those lands along with early tradesmen and stockmen. Its importance became famous with the discovery of iron ore in its environs of Middleboro; that is a story of unfounded lasting wealth that ended with disappointment for those of the area and Englishmen who invested heavily only to have the grade of iron ore become useless. It played its role during the Civil War and its status today in a thriving city. It stands as a monument to Daniel Boone and the thirty men who created it, the undaunted pioneer men and women who faced and conquered natural and human hardships that made it a lasting monument to humanity as part of the history of the United States.

The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography by John S. Bowman Pdf

Biography is an endlessly fascinating subject for a wide variety of readers. The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography is the most up-to-date and comprehensive, single-volume, biographical reference of living and dead Americans available. The book contains 9,000 entries written for general readers in fluid narrative style. Each entry is self-contained and does not assume any historic or geographic knowledge. What sets this book apart is its breadth of coverage--living and dead, famous and forgotten American figures, of diverse careers, from colonial times to the present day--and its attention to women and minority groups. The Dictionary has been originally compiled--not derived from older work--with the help of over one-hundred consultants. It also contains two exceptionally useful indexes: one by occupation and the other by names mentioned in the entries (whether or not they are entries themselves). The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography is written for anyone interested in owning an eminently readable reference to living contemporaries and their achievements as well as to historically important figures. John Bowman, an accomplished author and editor, has been assisted by an editoral board of distinguished American scholars.

Getting the message through: A Branch History of the U.S. Army Signal Corps by Rebecca Robbins Raines Pdf

Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

In Pursuit of Beauty by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) Pdf

"This project is the first comprehensive study of a phenomenon that not only dominated the American arts of the 1870s and 1880s, but also helped set the course of such later developments in the United States as the Arts and Crafts movement, the indigenous interpretation of Art Nouveau, and even the rise of modernism. In fact, the early history of the Metropolitan--its founding, its sponsorship of a school of industrial design, and its display of decorative works--is inextricably tied to the Aesthetic movement and its educational goals. "In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement" comprised some 175 objects including furniture, metalwork, stained glass, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, painting, and sculpture. Some of these had rarely been displayed; others, although familiar, were being shown in new and even startling contexts. The exhibition and catalogue are arranged thematically to illustrate both the major styles of a visually rich movement and the ideas that generated its diversity"--From publisher's description.
