Digital Communications with Emphasis on Data Modems by Richard W. Middlestead Pdf

This book uses a practical approach in the application of theoretical concepts to digital communications in the design of software defined radio modems. This book discusses the design, implementation and performance verification of waveforms and algorithms appropriate for digital data modulation and demodulation in modern communication systems. Using a building-block approach, the author provides an introductory to the advanced understanding of acquisition and data detection using source and executable simulation code to validate the communication system performance with respect to theory and design specifications. The author focuses on theoretical analysis, algorithm design, firmware and software designs and subsystem and system testing. This book treats system designs with a variety of channel characteristics from very low to optical frequencies. This book offers system analysis and subsystem implementation options for acquisition and data detection appropriate to the channel conditions and system specifications, and provides test methods for demonstrating system performance. This book also: Outlines fundamental system requirements and related analysis that must be established prior to a detailed subsystem design Includes many examples that highlight various analytical solutions and case studies that characterize various system performance measures Discusses various aspects of atmospheric propagation using the spherical 4/3 effective earth radius model Examines Ionospheric propagation and uses the Rayleigh fading channel to evaluate link performance using several robust waveform modulations Contains end-of-chapter problems, allowing the reader to further engage with the text Digital Communications with Emphasis on Data Modems is a great resource for communication-system and digital signal processing engineers and students looking for in-depth theory as well as practical implementations.

Digital Communication by John R. Barry,Edward A. Lee,David G. Messerschmitt Pdf

This book concerns digital communication. Specifically, we treat the transport of bit streams from one geographical location to another over various physical media, such as wire pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and radio. We also treat multiple-access channels, where there are potentially multiple transmitters and receivers sharing a common medium. Ten years have elapsed since the Second Edition, and there have been remarkable advances in wireless communication, including cellular telephony and wireless local-area networks. This Third Edition expands treatment of communication theories underlying wireless, and especially advanced techniques involving multiple antennas, which tum the traditional single-input single-output channel into a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. This is more than a trivial advance, as it stimulates many advanced techniques such as adaptive antennas and coding techniques that take advantage of space as well as time. This is reflected in the addition of two new chapters, one on the theory of MIMO channels, and the other on diversity techniques for mitigating fading. The field of error-control coding has similarly undergone tremendous changes in the past decade, brought on by the invention of turbo codes in 1993 and the subsequent rediscovery of Gallager's low-density parity-check codes. Our treatment of error-control coding has been rewritten to reflect the current state of the art. Other materials have been reorganized and reworked, and three chapters from the previous edition have been moved to the book's Web site to make room.

Of related interest … Digital Telephony John Bellamy "As a departure from conventional treatment of communication theory, the book stresses how systems operate and the rationale behind their design, rather than presenting rigorous analytical formulations." —Telecommunications Journal Both a reference for telecommunication engineers and a text for graduate level engineering and computer science students, this book provides an introduction to all aspects of digital communication, with emphasis on voice digitization, digital transmission, digital switching, network synchronization, network control, and network analysis. Its aim is to present system level design considerations, and then relate the specific equipment to telephone networks around the world, particularly North America. 526 pp. (0 471-08089-6) 1982 A Reference Manual for Telecommunications Engineering Roger L. Freeman Here’s a comprehensive reference for those who design, build, purchase, use, or maintain telecommunications systems, offering the only system design database devoted exclusively to the field. It pulls together a vast amount of information from such diverse sources as CCITT/CCIR, EIA, US Military Standards and Handbooks, NBS, BTL/ATT, REA, and periodicals and monographs published by over twenty principal manufacturers. Covers telephone traffic, transmission factors in telephony, outside plant-metallic pair systems, noise and modulation, radio-frequency data and regulatory information, facsimile transmission, and more. 1504 pp. (0 471-86753-5) 1985

An Introduction to Digital Communications by Jack Kurzweil Pdf

An Introduction to Digital Communications focuses on the central theoretical and practical issues involved in modem design. It is intended for a two semester course at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. The first half of the book deals with the basic issues of baseband and passband data transmission and contains descriptions of applications to specific digital transmission systems. The second half is more specifically addressed to design issues including timing and carrier recovery, channel characterization, adaptive equalization, and trellis coding. Although application oriented, the text is sufficiently rigorous to provide an entry point into current research.

Who This Book Is For This book was written as a comprehensive guide to the evolution and modern development associated with the various facts of the field of data communications. As such, this book can be used as a textbook both by students and professionals. Each chapter includes a quiz to test your knowledge, and the answers to questions are contained at the back of this book. This Book's Approach to Data Communications The modern society we live in today is a communications-oriented society. Thus, the goal of this book is to assist readers in understanding how this society operates by examining the basic structure of the field of data communications. This book explains how different communications devices operate, describes the different types of transmission facilities used to transport information, and examines such emerging technologies as digital subscriber lines and cable modems that might revolutionize the manner by which we work. For readers who surf the Web with conventional modems, imagine being able to transmit and receive data at a speed several orders of magnitude beyond what we now do. The possibilities for new applications become almost endless. Soon, we will be able to visit museums and join virtual lectures on the style of different artists, and we'll be able to zoom in to see minute details that might previously have required a trip around the world. Soon, we will be able to talk and view our parents, business associates, or pen pals located hundreds or thousands of miles away as if they were in our living rooms or offices, and we will do so not only on our home computer but on our cell phone! So join me in examining the field of data communications as we explore its evolution and the technical aspects of equipment and transmission facilities that make the wonderful world of data communications a reality. 0672322161P03252002

Applied Data Communications and Networks by B. Buchanan Pdf

The usage of data communications and computer networks are ever in creasing. It is one of the few technological areas which brings benefits to most of the countries and the peoples of the world. Without it many industries could not exist. It is the objective of this book to discuss data communications in a readable form that students and professionals all over the world can understand. As much as possible the text uses dia grams to illustrate key points. Most currently available data communications books take their view point from either a computer scientists top-down approach or from an electronic engineers bottom-up approach. This book takes a practical ap proach and supports it with a theoretical background to create a textbook which can be used by electronic engineers, computer engineers, computer scientists and industry professionals. It discusses most of the current and future key data communications technologies, including: • Data Communications Standards and Models; • Local Area Networks (Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI); • Transmission Control ProtocollInternet Protocol (TCPIIP); • High-level Data Link Control (HDLC); • X.25 Packet-switching; • Asynchronous Communications (RS-232) and Modems; • Pulse Coded Modulation (PCM); • Integrated Digital Services Network (ISDN); • Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM); • Error Control; • X-Windows. The chapters are ordered in a possible structure for the presentation of the material and have not been sectioned into data communications areas.
