Cyanide Formation and Fate in Complex Effluents and its Relation to Water Quality Criteria by Michael Kavanaugh Pdf

Cyanide occurs in many industrial and municipal wastewaters and is often an expected constituent of typical treatment plant wastewater streams. However, a growing number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across the USA have detected cyanide in cholorinated effluents at levels exceeding influent concentrations. Because water quality criteria and related discharge limits are typically low some of these WWTPs periodically exceed effluent cyanide standards. Potential causes include cyanide formation during wastewater cholrination processes, the presence of interferences that cause false negatives, and false positives caused by artifacts of sample handling or analytical techniques. The possible causes of the apparent cyanide formation phenomenon were investigated in this study. Cyanide in Water and Soil by David A. Dzombak,Rajat S. Ghosh,George M. Wong-Chong Pdf

The presence of cyanide is a significant issue in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment and management, in remediation of former manufactured gas plant sites and aluminum production waste disposal sites, in treatment and management of residuals from hydrometallurgical gold mining, and in other industrial operations in which cyanide-bearing

Photodegradation of Water Pollutants by Martin M. Halmann Pdf

Photodegradation of Water Pollutants, the only complete survey available of current photocatalytic methods for treating water pollutants, covers all aspects of light-stimulated detoxification. Ideal for researchers and students, this new book explains methods for pollution treatment that have proven more effective than conventional biodegradation. Photodegradation of Water Pollutants examines advanced oxidation processes that have been successful in treating the chemical substances produced by industrial effluents and intensive agriculture. These oxidation processes include irradiation with ultraviolet or visible light, the use of homogenous sensitizers, such as dyes, and the use of heterogeneous photocatalysts, such as dispersed semiconductors. In addition, Photodegradation of Water Pollutants addresses the naturally occurring self-cleaning of some pollutants in sunlit surface waters, as well as several alternative non-photochemical approaches to water treatment. Available treatment options are discussed for the main groups of water pollutants, including toxic inorganic ions (cyanides, heavy metals), hydrocarbon derivatives (oil spills, surfactants, pulp and paper wastes), halocarbons, organo-N, organo-P, and organo-S compounds. The text also contains a unique section on the economics of advanced oxidation pollution treatments.

The Kinetics of Environmental Aquatic Photochemistry by Asa Leifer Pdf

Now in one source---the theory and practice for determining environmentally relevant rates of photoreaction in aquatic media. Works out all mathematic deriviations, step by step. Shows how to select experimental procedures for measuring rates of aqueous photoreaction. Details how to measure rates at very low concentrations. Also describes theory and practice of chemical actinometry. Shows how to measure rates of direct and indirect aqueous photoreaction by outdoor experiments in sunlight and laboratory experiments using monochromatic light. Describes detailed experimental procedures for obtaining requisite kinetic data. Gives comprehensive tables of solar irradiance as a function of latitude and season of the year in the northern hemisphere. Illustrates how to use data from kinetic experiments to estimate rates of direct and indirect photoreaction in aquatic media in the environment.
