Disaster on Green Ramp by Center of Center of Military History United States Army,Center of Military History United States,Mary Condon-Rall Pdf

Disaster on Green Ramp: The Army's Response is a powerful story of pain, terror, pride, courage, and compassion. It celebrates the magnificent spirit of the men and women who make up America's military community. This work describes the Army's exceptionally effective response to the tragic events on 23 March 1994 at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina. On that day a large number of Army paratroopers from nearby Fort Bragg had assembled in an area adjacent to the airstrip known as Green Ramp, preparing to board a transport that would carry them aloft for a training parachute jump. They never made that j ump. Shortly after 1400 hours two aircraft attempted to land simultaneously at Pope. The resulting crash produced a massive fire that brought death or injury to more than a hundred paratroopers- the worst peacetime loss of life suffered by the 82d Airborne Division since World War II. You will recognize the troopers, doctors, medics, chaplains, volunteers, and family members who triumphed over tragedy; some by name, but most by type. They are, in truth, much like you and me- essentially ordinary people cast in extraordinary roles by fate. What they shared was a fierce loyalty to one another.

My Share of the Task by Gen. Stanley McChrystal Pdf

"General McChrystal is a legendary warrior with a fine eye for enduring lessons about leadership, courage, and consequence." —Tom Brokaw General Stanley McChrystal is widely admired for his hunger to know the truth, his courage to find it, and his humility to listen to those around him. Even as the commanding officer of all U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, he stationed himself forward and frequently went on patrols with his troops to experience their challenges firsthand. In this illuminating New York Times bestseller, McChrystal frankly explores the major episodes and controversies of his career. He describes the many outstanding leaders he served with and the handful of bad leaders he learned not to emulate. And he paints a vivid portrait of how the military establishment turned itself, in one generation, into the adaptive, resilient force that would soon be tested in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the wider War on Terror. "A compelling account of his impressive career." -The Wall Street Journal ' "This is a brilliant book about leadership wrapped inside a fascinating personal narrative." -Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs Stanley McChrystal retired in July 2010 as a four-star general in the U.S. Army. His last assignment was as the commander of the International Security Assistance Force and as the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He is currently a senior fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and cofounder of the McChrystal Group, a leadership consulting firm. He and his wife, Annie, live in Virginia.

The Army's Role in Domestic Disaster Support. An Assessment of Policy Choices by Anonim Pdf

This report is intended as a first step in identifying the central issues for determining the appropriate role in disaster relief for the Army of the Future. It addresses four questions: (1) What is the current structure of federal disaster response and how do the military, and the Army in particular, fit within it?; (2) What are current civilian needs for disaster response and how can the Army meet them?; (3) What are the chief implications of expanding the Army's role in jointly managed disaster support?; and (4) What are the options for expanding the Army's role and what steps should the Army support regarding these options?

Humanitarian and Relief Logistics by Vasileios Zeimpekis,Soumia Ichoua,Ioannis Minis Pdf

This edited volume highlights recent research advances in humanitarian relief logistics. The contributed chapters span the spectrum of key issues and activities from preparedness to mitigation operations (response), planning and execution. The volume also presents state-of-the-art methods and systems through current case studies. Significant issues in planning and execution of humanitarian relief logistics discussed in this volume include the following: • Approaches that tackle realistic relief distribution networks. In addition to large-scale computing issues, heuristics may handle the complexity and particularities of humanitarian supply chains • Methods that integrate real-time information while effectively coping with time pressure and uncertainty, both of which are inherent to a disaster scene • Judicious recourse strategies that allow a quick and effective restoration of pre-planned solutions whenever an unpredictable event occurs • Coordination of multiple parties that are often involved in managing a disaster, including NGOs, local, state and federal agencies. This volume provides robust evidence that research in humanitarian logistics may lead to substantial improvements in effectiveness and efficiency of disaster relief operations. This is quite encouraging, since the unique characteristics of disaster scenes provide significant opportunities for researchers to investigate novel approaches contributing to logistics research while offering a significant service to society.
