Discerning Wisdom in God's Creation by Norman C. Habel Pdf

Where can Wisdom be found? Job 28.12 Wisdom is usually associated with profound knowledge acquired over time. In ancient times, however, wisdom was also discerned as a force or factor of nature. Wisdom was not only found in human minds but also in God's creation. The wise of biblical times--as distinct from prophets, priests and kings--were tantamount to the 'scientists' of their day. And like scientists, they had a way of discerning wisdom in creation that involved the rational steps of observation, analysis and discernment. The classic question posed by the wise was: Where can wisdom be found? Or more precisely: Where and how can wisdom be discerned in nature? Or in contemporary terms: How might we follow the approach of ancient scientists and find innate wisdom 'wired' in nature today? I invite you to join me as I seek to discern Wisdom embedded in nature, and acquire a Wisdom awareness-- a cosmic consciousness that evokes a sense of wonder and profound mystery. From the Preface Norman Habel is a Professorial Fellow at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. He has long been involved in issues of biblical interpretation and eco-justice, including the task of reading the Bible from the perspective of Earth. Thee Earth Bible series and the Earth Bible Commentary series, both of which he initiated, reflect this ecological orientation. He is also concerned about how we read the book of nature and discern its mysteries.

Living in The Story by Charlotte Vaughan Coyle Pdf

What kind of book is the Bible? Is it a rulebook or a guidebook for moral living? Is it a history book or a book filled with fascinating (and sometimes fantastic) stories? Did humans write the Bible or did God somehow speak a perfect message that the authors transcribed? Many people have asked these questions about the nature of this beautiful, odd, comforting, disturbing book the church calls its “Holy Scripture.” Charlotte Vaughan Coyle shares her own journey to make sense of the Bible in this read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year project. She discovered that the crucial work of asking hard questions and even arguing with the Bible revealed the Scriptures to be a symphony of polyphonic voices, a work of art that paints an alternative vision of reality, a complex novel-like story unavoidably embedded in its own culture and time, and yet able to give witness to the God beyond history who has acted (and continues to act) within history. With the heart of a pastor and the passion of a preacher, Rev. Coyle invites seekers and students (both churched and un-churched) to strap on their scuba gear and join her for a deeper dive beneath the surface of this immense, colorful, mysterious world of the Bible.

Discernment of Revelation in the Gospel of Matthew by Frances Shaw Pdf

In the biblical tradition revelation from God is frequently mediated through certain gifted individuals. Disclosure and hiddenness are both integral to revelation and this study explores how Matthew presents Jesus as a true discerner of revelation and how he seeks to persuade his readers to accept the truth of his claim. Discernment of revelation is a significant motif running through Matthew's Gospel, relating closely to other aspects of his theological dynamic. This is explored by examining the background in the Old Testament and early Jewish literature, model discernment (Jesus), fragile discernment (Peter) and failed discernment (opponents). A general composition critical approach is taken, although insights from literary criticism are also used, especially to explore literary devices familiar in the apocalyptic and wisdom traditions which Matthew uses as persuasive tools.

Theological Ethics through a Multispecies Lens by Celia E. Deane-Drummond Pdf

There are two driving questions informing this book. The first is where does our moral life come from? It presupposes that considering morality broadly is inadequate. Instead, different aspects need to be teased apart. It is not sufficient to assume that different virtues are bolted onto a vicious animality, red in tooth and claw. Nature and culture have interlaced histories. By weaving in evolutionary theories and debates on the evolution of compassion, justice and wisdom, it showa a richer account of who we are as moral agents. The second driving question concerns our relationships with animals. Deane-Drummond argues for a complex community-based multispecies approach. Hence, rather than extending rights, a more radical approach is a holistic multispecies framework for moral action. This need not weaken individual responsibility. She intends not to develop a manual of practice, but rather to build towards an alternative philosophically informed approach to theological ethics, including animal ethics. The theological thread weaving through this account is wisdom. Wisdom has many different levels, and in the broadest sense is connected with the flow of life understood in its interconnectedness and sociality. It is profoundly theological and practical. In naming the project the evolution of wisdom Deane-Drummond makes a statement about where wisdom may have come from and its future orientation. But justice, compassion and conscience are not far behind, especially in so far as they are relevant to both individual decision-making and institutions.

The Nature of Things by Graham Buxton,Norman C. Habel Pdf

In 2015 a conference on "Rediscovering the Spiritual in God's Creation" was held at the Serafino winery complex in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. The aim of the conference was not to seek consensus but to survey the landscape with a view to intentional responsible action in caring for God's creation. Delegates were challenged to recognize their own worldviews and to widen their horizons to encompass the enormity of the transcendence and immanence of God's presence in all creation. A group of leading international scholars and experts in the fields of science, ecology, theology, and ethics participated in a multidisciplinary conversation on the spiritual in creation, with the aim of discovering fresh horizons with regard to creation care, liturgy, justice, and discipleship within the Christian community. The chapters in this volume reflect the diversity of perspectives summarized in The Serafino Declaration, which was crafted towards the end of the conference. This declaration (which opens the volume) outlines a range of views relating to the presence of the spiritual in creation, views that are both traditional and radical. This volume highlights the current concern over ecological destruction and finds sources of inspiration in the deepest roots of our traditions and forms of spirituality to sustain efforts towards custodianship of the land and care for God's creation. Wisdom & Creation by Leo G. Perdue Pdf

Wisdom literature, asserts the author, is grounded in the theological tradition of creation. For the Wisdom writers of Israel and early Judaism, God is the maker of heaven and earth, whose creativity both forms and sustains the world. The very nature of God is to create life, to sustain it, and to ensure that it flourishes. God's originating acts of creation and sustaining providence provide the basis for faith, worship, and ethics. Leo G. Perdue grounds his reconstruction of the theology of Wisdom in the creation metaphors residing witin the language of the sages--metaphors that derive from Israelite creation traditions and the mythologies of the ancient Near East. He focuses on the differences and interactions between two sets of creation metaphors: those dealing with the creation of the world (cosmology), and those centering on the creation of humankind (anthropology). The contemporary importance of the creation theology of Wisdom literature, says the author, is that it can move the church away from one-sided emphasis on salvation history and eschatology to a serious participation in environmental concerns and social justice. Wisdom and Creation provides a thorough yet accessible discussion of the theological message of this important part of the Bible.

Invitation to Dogmatic Theology by Paul C. McGlasson Pdf

""McGlasson's book is a pointed, powerful, and hard-hitting outline and defense of the way dogmatic theology must grow out of and be defined by the canonical shape of the Word in its witness to the risen Lord. This is a book that will rustle feathers at a time when feathers need rustling in a church that has allowed our grasp of God's truth to slip away from its scriptural and Christological moorings. Written with clarity and helpful argumentative sweep and summary, McGlasson raises challenges that must be faced by all pastors, seminarians, and theologians."" --Ephraim Radner, author of Hope among the Fragments ""A welcome addition to the growing body of literature on theological method and authority. Major influences on the author include Brevard Childs and Karl Barth."" --Donald G. Bloesch, Emeritus, Dubuque Theological Seminary ""Persuaded that both liberal and evangelical theologies fail to convey the mature consensus of historic and canonical Christian faith, Paul McGlasson offers a passionate and learned defense of his own proposal. Although readers will not find all of his criticisms or suggestions convincing, this book will provoke, illuminate, and display the enduring relevance of dogmatic theology for the life of the church."" --Michael Horton, Westminster Seminary Paul C. McGlasson is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). He received his MDiv from Yale Divinity School and his PhD from Yale University in Systematic Theology. He is the author of several books, including God the Redeemer, Canon and Proclamation, and Invitation to Dogmatic Theology. McGlasson has served the church both as a parish minister, and as a teacher of theology in college and seminary.

Creation by David Fergusson Pdf

This book explores anew the theme of creation in Scripture, tradition, and contemporary theology. David Fergusson defends the classical account of creation out of nothing but gives more sustained attention than the Christian tradition typically has given to the holistic significance of the created world. Offering both doctrinal exposition and apologetic argument, Fergusson discusses creation in relation to the problem of evil and the fall, divine providence, deism, Darwinian evolution, environmental ethics, animal rights, and other matters. Unusually, the book also touches on the topic of extraterrestrial intelligence. Concise and accessible, Fergusson s Creation will be particularly useful to students and others seeking a well-informed overview of this important subject.

Creation as Sacrament by John Chryssavgis Pdf

John Chryssavgis explores the sacred dimension of the natural environment, and the significance of creation in the rich theological history and spiritual classics of the Orthodox Church, through the lens of its unique ascetical, liturgical and mystical experience. The global ecological crisis affecting humanity's air, water, and land, as well as the planet's flora and fauna, has resulted in manifest fissures on the image of God in creation. Chryssavgis examines, from an Orthodox Christian perspective, the possibility of restoring that shattered image through the sacramental lenses of cosmic transfiguration, cosmic interconnection, and cosmic reconciliation. The viewpoints of early theologians and contemporary thinkers are extensively explored from a theological and spiritual perspective, including countering those who deny that God's creation is in crisis. Presenting a worldview advanced and championed by the Orthodox Church in the modern world, this book encourages personal and societal transformation in making ethical and economic choices that respect creation as sacrament.
