Discovering Florida by Anonim Pdf

Florida’s lower gulf coast was a key region in the early European exploration of North America, with an extraordinary amount of first-time interactions between Spaniards and Florida’s indigenous cultures. Discovering Florida compiles all the major writings of Spanish explorers in the area between 1513 and 1566. Including transcriptions of the original Spanish documents as well as English translations, this volume presents—in their own words—the experiences and reactions of Spaniards who came to Florida with Juan Ponce de León, Pánfilo de Narváez, Hernando de Soto, and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. These accounts, which have never before appeared together in print, provide an astonishing glimpse into a world of indigenous cultures that did not survive colonization. With introductions to the primary sources, extensive notes, and a historical overview of Spanish exploration in the region, this book offers an unprecedented firsthand view of La Florida in the earliest stages of European conquest.

Florida’s Coast-to-Coast Trail Guide by Nanci Adler Pdf

Florida's Coast-to-Coast Trail Guide is a guidebook designed specifically for the 250-mile dedicated bicycle/pedestrian trail that provides an uninterrupted cross-Florida trail from Titusville to St. Petersburg. The trail (over 80% complete and to be completed by 2025) already attracts not only local cyclists and walkers, but also out-of-state cycling enthusiasts. This book provides readers with a broad background of the communities through which they will travel. Although maps are included, this is not a detailed "how-to" guide, nor does it provide extensive lodging, camping or restaurant information; much of that information changes frequently and can be easily obtained via online searches. Instead, this book focuses on interesting cultural and natural aspects of the route. By highlighting the local flavor of small towns, the beauty of natural Florida, as well as local historical events, this book will introduce readers to the uniqueness of Florida. Distinctive features covered in the book include the Greek heritage of Tarpon Springs, Winter Garden's thriving downtown based on its citrus and bass-fishing past, Titusville's role in space exploration, and St. Petersburg’s lively waterfront and flourishing art scene. Also covered is the natural world of beautiful freshwater springs, moss-shrouded oak trees, and migratory birds found in protected areas along the trail such as Gemini Springs Park, Brooker Creek Preserve and the Green Swamp. In addition, readers will be introduced to important historical Florida figures such as civil rights leaders Harry T. and Harriett V. Moore and Russian entrepreneur and railway builder Peter Demens.

An Account of the First Discovery, and Natural History of Florida by William Roberts Pdf

Excerpt from An Account of the First Discovery, and Natural History of Florida: With a Particular Detail of the Several Expeditions and Descents Made on That Coast The Geography of Florida being but imperfectly known to the generality of this nation, and, as it is now in our possession, a more perfect knowledge thereof would be of the greatest service to such shipping as may be sent to that part; the Publisher presumes to offer to the public the following account of it. He has been encouraged thereto by many of his friends, who have been pleased to favour him with several helps for that purpose. For this reason, he imagines that the reader will find this geographical description of that extensive sea-coast, determined to a much nearer degree of accuracy than any yet extant, as he has collected and digested it, with great care and labour, from a considerable number of original Spanish and French charts, found on board several different vessels (which were made prizes) belonging to those nations, and which were communicated to him by the gentlemen in whose possession they were. He was also assisted by several curious remarks made by gentlemen who navigated in that part of the world. He has been more particularly induced to publish it now, since whatsoever can assist the navigation of that coast must be of the greatest utility at this juncture, when the settling of that country is under the consideration of the government, and many vessels fitting out for that part. If he has in any part succeeded, he shall esteem himself happy, and his labour well employed; but, if otherwise, he hopes, this performance my incite some other person, who may have better helps and greater abilities, to rectify the errors, and render such a desirable piece of service, more perfect, to his country. He moreover flatters himself that this work, though it may, in some particulars, be defective, yet will be of the greatest use, till more accurate surveys can be made; and, in the mean time, in some measure, assist those gentlemen, who may be employed by the government for that purpose.
