Korea's Twentieth-Century Odyssey by Michael E. Robinson Pdf

For more than half of the twentieth century, the Korean peninsula has been divided between two hostile and competitive nation-states, each claiming to be the sole legitimate expression of the Korean nation. The division remains an unsolved problem dating to the beginnings of the Cold War and now projects the politics of that period into the twenty-first century. Korea’s Twentieth-Century Odyssey is designed to provide readers with the historical essentials upon which to unravel the complex politics and contemporary crises that currently exist in the East Asian region. Beginning with a description of late-nineteenth-century imperialism, Michael Robinson shows how traditional Korean political culture shaped the response of Koreans to multiple threats to their sovereignty after being opened to the world economy by Japan in the 1870s. He locates the origins of both modern nationalism and the economic and cultural modernization of Korea in the twenty years preceding the fall of the traditional state to Japanese colonialism in 1910. Robinson breaks new ground with his analysis of the colonial period, tracing the ideological division of contemporary Korea to the struggle of different actors to mobilize a national independence movement at the time. More importantly, he locates the reason for successful Japanese hegemony in policies that included—and thus implicated—Koreans within the colonial system. He concludes with a discussion of the political and economic evolution of South and North Korea after 1948 that accounts for the valid legitimacy claims of both nation-states on the peninsula.

How Long, O Lord by George E. Ogle and Dorothy L. Ogle Pdf

HOW LONG, O LORD? reflects the ongoing prayers of Korean people for freedom and justice as they undergo the oppressions of the twentieth century. A combination of historical fiction and autobiography, this collection tells history as stories about peasants, industrial workers, and ordinary citizens who endured and reacted to Japanese imperialism, foreign occupation, division of the country, war and cruelty of military dictators. Father and Son, spanning the years from 1919 to the mid-1970´s, is a story of two generations of peasants who fought for dignity and justice but get caught in the struggles of greater world forces. The next three stories focus on the courage of South Korean industrial workers who, by refusing to be submissive to those in power, have moved Korea in the direction of democracy and human rights. Prayer for the Innocents, My Body, and Tearoom tell of the torture and execution of eight men falsely accused of being part of a conspiracy to overthrow South Korea´s military dictatorship. Because he offered public prayers for these men, the author was deported from Korea in 1974. The last story was inspired by the author´s interviews with North Korean refugees in Russia. Escape into Bondage tells of two men who cannot return home. They become "brothers" as their lives are joined in a perilous odyssey in Russia where they have no legal status. One finds haven in South Korea. Through his experiences and interactions with his new friends, we gain insight into the complexities facing those who struggle for peace and reunification of Korea.

The History of Korea (Vol.1&2) by Homer B. Hulbert Pdf

The History of Korea presents a chronological account of Korea from ancient days, over 2000 B. C, to modern 20th century Korea. Hulbert said that Korea and Japan have the same two racial types, but Japan is mostly Malay and Korea is mostly Manchu-Korean. He claimed that Korea is physically mostly of the northern type, but also said that the nation, being physically mostly of the northern type, did not disprove Hulbert's claim that the Malay element developed Korea's first civilization, although not necessarily originating Korea's first civilization, and the Malay element imposed its language in its main features in the entire peninsula.

A Concise History of Modern Korea by Michael J. Seth Pdf

This comprehensive and balanced history of modern Korea explores the social, economic, and political issues it has faced since being catapulted into the wider world at the end of the nineteenth century. Placing this formerly insular society in a global context, Michael J. Seth describes how this ancient, culturally and ethnically homogeneous society first fell victim to Japanese imperialist expansionism, and then was arbitrarily divided in half after World War II. Seth traces the postwar paths of the two Koreas with different political and social systems and different geopolitical orientations as they evolved into sharply contrasting societies. South Korea, after an unpromising start, became one of the few postcolonial developing states to enter the ranks of the first world, with a globally competitive economy, a democratic political system, and a cosmopolitan and dynamic culture. By contrast, North Korea became one of the world's most totalitarian and isolated societies, a nuclear power with an impoverished and famine-stricken population. Considering the radically different and historically unprecedented trajectories of the two Koreas, Seth assesses the insights they offer for understanding not only modern Korea but the broader perspective of world history."

Korean History by Anonim Pdf

Since the Liberation of 1945, Korean historians have spent much time restoring the true history of Korea while criticizing Japanese colonialist historiography. Japan s forced annexation of Korea brought about not only distress to the lives of Koreans but also serious distortions of Korean history. Considering all these obstacles, achievements in the field of Korean history over the past 30 years have been quite remarkable. This volume, Korean History: Discovery of Its Characteristics and Development, presents 29 original articles and arranged into five major

Korean War by Captivating History Pdf

Explore how the Korean War Started, the Aftermath and the Events in Between! The narrative of the Korean War in the West, and particularly in the United States, tells the tale of a conflict between two global superpowers and competing ideologies in a far-flung corner of the globe. The reality is that the wheels of motion that drove the country to war in 1950 began turning long before American boots set foot on Korean soil. The heart of the conflict was a civil war between a population arbitrarily divided by colonization and the global geopolitics at the end of the Second World War. Challenging the widely perpetuated Western narrative and getting to the core of the Korean conflict is no easy feat. From assumptions that the outbreak of war was a deliberate act of communist aggression, to the notion that Eisenhower and Truman's constant threats of atomic annihilation broke the Chinese and North Korean spirit and led to the signing of the armistice, everything needs to be dissected and reviewed on its own factual merit to fully understand the nature of the war. This guide seeks to pull this narrative curtain and peek behind at the truth of the matter, tracing the history of the war back to the Japanese occupation and uncovering the root of Korean nationalism that stirred the nation into the frenzy of civil war in 1950. It is about an often-forgotten war, fighting for its place in history between the two behemoths of the Second World War and the Vietnam War, which was no less significant, no less destructive, and had no less impact on the global politics of the twentieth century. Some of the topics covered in this book include: The Japanese Ascendency: 1910-1945 A Korea Divided: The US Occupation of the South The Forging of the North Korean State First Blood: The Outbreak of War Strike Hard and Strike Fast: The US Retreat Bittersweet Victories: American Revival and China's Decision to Cross the Yalu How Do You Solve a Problem Like China? Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History (Updated Edition) by Bruce Cumings Pdf

"Passionate, cantankerous, and fascinating. Rather like Korea itself."--Nicholas D. Kristof, New York Times Book Review Korea has endured a "fractured, shattered twentieth century," and this updated edition brings Bruce Cumings's leading history of the modern era into the present. The small country, overshadowed in the imperial era, crammed against great powers during the Cold War, and divided and decimated by the Korean War, has recently seen the first real hints of reunification. But positive movements forward are tempered by frustrating steps backward. In the late 1990s South Korea survived its most severe economic crisis since the Korean War, forcing a successful restructuring of its political economy. Suffering through floods, droughts, and a famine that cost the lives of millions of people, North Korea has been labeled part of an "axis of evil" by the George W. Bush administration and has renewed its nuclear threats. On both sides Korea seems poised to continue its fractured existence on into the new century, with potential ramifications for the rest of the world.
