Doctors' Wives by Frank G. Slaughter Pdf

Doctors' Wives' Disease is not an imaginary ailment. For, in the closed, inbred society of a great medical center, these women, the wives of superbly successful physicians, are driven by loneliness, boredom, and frustration along forbidden pathways. And alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity become their alternatives to despair. A radio bulletin tears the camouflage from the apparent prosperous tranquility of the community: "A prominent Weston physician has just shot and killed his wife. A man, with the victim at the time and identified only as another doctor, was also seriously wounded." Five doctors' wives hear the announcement, and each one of them comes with despair and terror to realize that her husband, himself, just might be involved in the scandal—either as philanderer or killer. Where has trust gone? And where is love? Beneath this scandalous and passionate picture of human weakness, is a tale, perhaps even more striking: and that is Dr. Slaughter's brilliant, minute, expert's picture of the urgent business of an ultramodern hospital. His descriptions—in fascinating detail—of a heart operation and a brain operation, are breathtakingly suspenseful, and based on the most advanced medical and surgical knowledge.

Doctors’ Marriages by Michael Myers Pdf

In marriage, partners bring together preexisting psychological and cul tural histories which may be quite disparate. The idea that "love con quers all" does not account for the complexities involved in the development of a contemporary partnership. Societal changes over the past few decades have resulted in impor tant shifts in patterns of relationships. Lengthened life spans, decreased incidence and severity of illness and disability, and the availability of contraception have affected our lives and plans substantially. Among the effects are marriages that last longer than they ever have and produce fewer children, despite the high divorce rate. Values and expectations in marriage have also changed over the past several decades, shifting from an emphasis on survival and eco nomic security to a focus on companionship, love, and communication. The desire for self-fulfillment has superseded more traditional concerns about family loyalty Zlnd responsibility. Thus, divorce is often sought as a solution to frustration, disappointment, and conflict. A societal change that has had considerable influence on individ uals and their relationships has been the emergence of the women's movement and changing roles and expectations for women. This change has brought new demands, fulfillments, and conflicts. Current styles of marriage have shifted from an automatic acceptance of clearly designated gender-determined roles toward more egalitarian and interdependent relationships with partners also expressing their own goals, styles, and personalities. The dual career or dual worker family has emerged as the dominant family structure in the United States.

The Doctor in the Victorian Novel by Tabitha Sparks Pdf

With the character of the doctor as her subject, Tabitha Sparks follows the decline of the marriage plot in the Victorian novel. As Victorians came to terms with the scientific revolution in medicine of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, the novel's progressive distance from the conventions of the marriage plot can be indexed through a rising identification of the doctor with scientific empiricism. A narrative's stance towards scientific reason, Sparks argues, is revealed by the fictional doctor's relationship to the marriage plot. Thus, novels that feature romantic doctors almost invariably deny the authority of empiricism, as is the case in George MacDonald's Adela Cathcart. In contrast, works such as Wilkie Collins's Heart and Science, which highlight clinically minded or even sinister doctors, uphold the determining logic of science and, in turn, threaten the novel's romantic plot. By focusing on the figure of the doctor rather than on a scientific theme or medical field, Sparks emulates the Victorian novel's personalization of tropes and belief systems, using the realism associated with the doctor to chart the sustainability of the Victorian novel's central imaginative structure, the marriage plot. As the doctors Sparks examines increasingly stand in for the encroachment of empirical knowledge on a morally formulated artistic genre, their alienation from the marriage plot and its interrelated decline succinctly herald the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of Modernism.
