Domestic History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Ellet Pdf

Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. The True History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Sydney George Fisher Pdf

Excerpt from The True History of the American Revolution The purpose of this history of the Revolution is to use the original authorities rather more frankly than has been the practice with our historians. They appear to have thought it advisable to omit from their narratives a great deal which, to me, seems essential to a true picture. Excerpt from A Short History of the American Revolution The common acceptance of certain traditions does not of itself always establish their truthfulness or importance, and the fact that poets have glorified their own heroes or conceptions ought not to close our eyes to other deeds that perhaps were of greater importance historically. Domestic History of the American Revolution by Mrs. Ellet Pdf

Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution The design and plan of the present work are entirely new. Its object is to exhibit the spirit and character of the Revolutionary period; to portray, as far as possible in so brief a record, the social and domestic condition of the times, and the state of feeling among the people, with something of the services and experience of a class not usually noticed among those whose names live in historical remembrance. With this view, a short and comprehensive narrative of the successive events of the war is interspersed with domestic details and anecdotes illustrative of the state of the country at various intervals. My researches during some years past in collecting authentic materials for "The Women of the American Revolution," have brought to light many interesting incidents connected with the war, so strikingly characteristic of the times, that they should not be suffered to pass into oblivion. History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by William Shepherd Pdf

Excerpt from History of the American Revolution Tee discovery of the western hemisphere, effected by the bold and persevering genius of Christopher Columbus, in the year 1492, gave a new impulse to European activity; and the splendid conquests of the Spaniards in the West Indies, and in South America, excited the emulation of the other maritime powers of Christendom. Our ancestors were not dilatory in their endeavors to enter upon this new path to glory and wealth; for we find that, in the year 1498, John Cabot, by virtue of a commission from Henry VIL, took formal possession, in the name of that mon arch, of a considerable portion of the conti nent of North America. No attempt, however, was made to estab lish a colony in that country till the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when Sir Humphrey Gil bert and Sir Walter Raleigh, in the years 1578 and 1584, formed settlements there. A History of the American Revolution by William Shepherd Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the American Revolution: Published in London Under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge Whilst the once persecuted Protestants thus gave a sad proof that their sufferings had not taught them mercy, it was reserved for a Roman Catholic nobleman to give to the new world a striking example of this happy docility. With what difficulties had they to struggle? What was a common error of the times? What rule of government did they establish? What became of the discontented sectarians? Excerpt from The History of the American Revolution: Being a Complete History of the Western World From the Earliest Period to the Establishment of the Independence of the United States The second volume contains the history of the Administrations of Washington, John Adams, and Jefferson, and of the Home Affairs of Madison's Administration. It treats of that period in the existence of the Union during which the leading idea for interpreting the Constitution, and putting it into operation, as an instrument of government for the nation, was determined. History of the American Revolution by Samuel Farmer Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain The first intention of the writer of this book.was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct'infiuence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and manceuvres in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of re-writing and re-arranging the whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is believed, correct and valuable. New Hampshire State History of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth Knowles Folsom Pdf

Excerpt from New Hampshire State History of the Daughters of the American Revolution It was no easy task for the chairman to go over records, secre tary's, treasurer's and historian's, and select just the items required, in some cases covering over thirty years Of work. And it was hard to have to leave out mention of the beautiful music, the lectures, and the delightful social events connected with the many, many Chapter meetings, and record just our work for God, home and country. Like our Granite Hills, we have held firm to the specified outline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by John Fiske Pdf

Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 It is an obvious comment upon the present work, that a story of the American Revolution which stops with the sur render oi Cornwallis and the consequent fall of Lord North's ministry is incomplete. One might reply, in general, that any historical narrative must needs be incomplete wherever it may happen to stop; but on the present occasion a more suitable answer is that the story is continued in my book entitled The Critical Period of American History, the first chapter of which deals with the Results of Yorktown. The text of this edition has been thoroughly revised, and in many places new matter has been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The War of Independence (Classic Reprint) by John Fiske Pdf

Excerpt from The War of Independence This little book does not contain the substance of the lectures on the American Revolution which I have delivered in so many parts of the United States since 1883. Those lectures, when completed and published, will make quite a detailed narrative; this book is but a sketch. It is hoped that it may prove useful to the higher classes in schools, as well as to teachers. When I was a boy I should have been glad to get hold of a brief account of the War for Independence that would have suggested answers to some of the questions that used to vex me. Was the conduct of the British government, in driving the Americans into the rebellion, merely wanton aggression, or was it not rather a bungling attempt to solve a political problem which really needed to be solved? Why were New Jersey and the Hudson river so important? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
