Nutrition and feeding of the broodmare by W. Martin-Rosset,N. Miraglia Pdf

"This publication deals with the broodmare, which is the key animal in the Equine chain. In the new competitive context of Equine Industry, the mare should foal a healthy offspring yearly at an optimum cost. The foal should be born and weaned at the accurate months of the year to fit the particular goals of production, i.e. races, sports or leisure horses. The improvement of knowledge of the biology of pregnancy and lactation on the one hand and of the nutrition and the interaction between nutrition and physiology of reproduction on the other hand is of major concern to the equine industry. The book is divided in six parts: - Pregnancy - Lactation - The foal - Feeding practices and pasture management - Nutrition and reproductive performances - Advances in reproductive biotechnologies Each part contains peer-reviewed contributions by well known experts. These materials are the second step of further discussion on the evaluation and prediction of the requirements of the different types of horses covered in the scope of the working group of the Horse commission of the European Association for Animal Production. All those concerned with husbandry and feeding systems in the equine industry will find this book a valuable resource. It serves as a reference point for scientists, veterinarians, adviser officers, and practioneers in the equine industry, as well as for teachers and students in equine science."

Case Studies on Reproductive Activity of Equines in Relation to Environmental Factors in Central Ethiopia by Alemayehu Lemma Pdf

The effect of environmental factors is becoming more significant in animal reproduction under the tropics. This thesis presents a study of the relationship between the circannual reproductive pattern of tropical female equines and environmental factors believed to influence reproduction such as climate, nutritional status and management. The thesis contains 7 chapters including introduction, literature reviews, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusions and recommendations. Reproductive activities of jennies and mares (as measured by follicular activities, manifestation of oestrus and incidence of ovulation) were studied using serial ultrasonography, observational study and progesterone assay through three distinctly different seasons. Data were collected on nutritional status, management systems and climate to establish relationships with reproductive pattern. Results are presented in detail in tabulations, figures, and graphics. The findings are discussed and summarized with conclusive remarks. Recommendations on future study prospects are also given.

Donkey by Jill Bough Pdf

Though donkeys have historically been among our most useful domesticated animals—from plowing fields to navigating difficult terrain—they have been much maligned in popular culture and given very little respect. So much so, that their perceived qualities of stupidity and stubbornness have made their way into the language of insult. But in Donkey, Jill Bough champions this humble creature, proving that after 10,000 years of domestication, this incredibly hard-working animal deserves our appreciation. Bough reveals the animal’s historic significance in Ancient Egypt, where it was once highly regarded—even worshipped. However, this elevated status did not endure in Ancient Greece and Rome, where donkeys were denigrated, ridiculed, and abused. Since that time, donkeys have continued to be associated with the poorest and most marginalized in human societies. All that time and all over the world, donkeys continue to be used for innumerable tasks, and even today, donkeys are considered to be one of the best draught animals in developing nations, where they continue to make a vital contribution. Bough rounds out her account with a look at the variety of social, cultural, and religious meanings that donkeys have embodied, especially in literature and art. With accounts that are both fascinating and touching, this cultural history of the donkey will inspire a new respect and admiration for this essential creature.
