The drought—or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it—has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers. Until the taps run dry. Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life—and the life of her brother—is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Operation and Cost of a Small Dehumidification Dry Kiln by Richard D. Bergman Pdf

Obtaining small quantities of custom kiln-dried lumber can be an expensive process for an individual woodworker. Building and operating a small kiln capable of drying custom cuts of lumber (such as slabs, bowl blanks) gives woodworkers another option. Our approach was to build and operate a small dehumidification dry kiln. The four charges of lumber ranged from 600 to 700 board feet (bf), and a woodworker with no dry-kiln experience operated the kiln. The first charge of mixed air-dried 4/4 hardwoods and softwoods was kiln-dried from 18.4% to 7.3% moisture content (MC) in 15 days with no casehardening. The second charge of 5/4 black cherry lumber was kiln-dried from 47.5% to 6.8% MC in 27 days with no casehardening, and the third charge of 4/4 northern red oak lumber was kiln-dried from 82.9% to 6.1% MC in 45 days and to 5.2% MC in 50 days with severe casehardening relieved by conditioning. A fourth charge of 300 bf 4/4 northern red oak, 200 bf of 4/4 shagbark hickory, and 100 bf of mixed 4/4 box elder and 4/4 black cherry was kiln-dried from 69.7% to 8.5% MC in 29 days with casehardening only in the northern red oak, and that was relieved by conditioning. We found that greater control of the dehumidifier operation earlier in the kiln schedule to maintain the safe drying rate would decrease the severity of casehardening when drying green northern red oak. New building materials, which are most of the initial cost, could be replaced by reused lumber. Drying small amounts of lumber using a dehumidification kiln is a suitable option for woodworkers even with limited knowledge of kilns.

The Dry Heart by Natalia Ginzburg Pdf

Finally back in print, a frighteningly lucid feminist horror story about marriage The Dry Heart begins and ends with the matter-of-fact pronouncement: “I shot him between the eyes.” As the tale—a plunge into the chilly waters of loneliness, desperation, and bitterness—proceeds, the narrator's murder of her flighty husband takes on a certain logical inevitability. Stripped of any preciousness or sentimentality, Natalia Ginzburg's writing here is white-hot, tempered by rage. She transforms the unhappy tale of an ordinary dull marriage into a rich psychological thriller that seems to beg the question: why don't more wives kill their husbands?

A Dry Oasis by Gregory P. Marchildon Pdf

Scientists have been issuing increasingly direct warnings about the impact that climate change is having on the planet. These interdisciplinary studies break new ground in terms of our understanding of the climate experience in the Great Plains before and after agriculture was introduced, the current array of institutions surrounding water governance, and the strengths and weaknesses of rural and Aboriginal communities. Four chapters focus on the present attributes of, as well as future scenarios for, the South Saskatchewan River Basin in southern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. The final group of chapters present case studies of rural communities, Cabri and Stewart Valley Saskatchewan, and Hanna as well as a First Nation reserve in Alberta, as well as a major conflict over water rights in Alberta. Dry Times by Mark Stafford Smith,Julian Cribb Pdf

With knowledge from our deserts, Australians can reshape the human story. Dry Times: Blueprint for a Red Land provides new insights into how our desert environments and institutions work – and how this affects the people living in them, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike. It shows that the desert offers solutions to the challenges of living in an uncertain and threatening age, teaching us new ways to live, manage scarce resources, and cope with climatic extremes, isolation and lack of water and energy. These lessons apply not only to remote regions, but also to cities and entire nations as humanity faces growing scarcity of vital resources. With vivid examples drawn from Australia's desert life, outback people, animals and plants, Dry Times holds many positive lessons for our nation and humanity in a changing and resource-depleted world.

Whiskey When We're Dry by John Larison Pdf

Named a Best Book by Entertainment Weekly, O Magazine, Goodreads, Southern Living, Outside Magazine, Oprah.com, HelloGiggles, Parade, Fodor’s Travel, Sioux City Journal, Read it Forward, Medium.com, and NPR’s All Things Considered. "A thunderclap of originality, here is a fresh voice and fresh take on one of the oldest stories we tell about ourselves as Americans and Westerners. It's riveting in all the right ways -- a damn good read that stayed with me long after closing the covers." - Timothy Egan, New York Times bestselling author of The Worst Hard Time From a blazing new voice in fiction, a gritty and lyrical American epic about a young woman who disguises herself as a boy and heads west In the spring of 1885, seventeen-year-old Jessilyn Harney finds herself orphaned and alone on her family's homestead. Desperate to fend off starvation and predatory neighbors, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved mare, and sets off across the mountains to find her outlaw brother Noah and bring him home. A talented sharpshooter herself, Jess's quest lands her in the employ of the territory's violent, capricious Governor, whose militia is also hunting Noah--dead or alive. Wrestling with her brother's outlaw identity, and haunted by questions about her own, Jess must outmaneuver those who underestimate her, ultimately rising to become a hero in her own right. Told in Jess's wholly original and unforgettable voice, Whiskey When We're Dry is a stunning achievement, an epic as expansive as America itself--and a reckoning with the myths that are entwined with our history.
