The Dwelling Houses of Charleston, South Carolina (Classic Reprint) by Alice R. Huger Smith Pdf

Excerpt from The Dwelling Houses of Charleston, South Carolina In this volume the authors have endeavored to tell the story of the older dwelling houses of Charleston and the families inhabiting them. It has not been their object to list or to describe these dwelling houses after the manner of a guide-book, but to show how the fashions of its architecture, though imported and constantly modified by new ideas brought chiefly from England, have yet maintained local characteristics, resulting in quite a distinctive style which has steadily persisted and been developed. This development lies spread before us in the Charleston streets, where the houses of successive periods stand side by side, so little altered that the stranger is rather struck by the atmosphere and interest of the place as a whole than by the beauty or quaintness of a few outstanding edifices. In trying to convey this impression we have naturally had to select out of the many available examples houses which, by their marked type, show best this thread of architectural growth, and we have treated of the families which constructed or dwelt in these houses. It is manifestly impossible to treat, even in a volume of this size, of every historic relic, but this necessary restraint has been harder because each public or private building has a history of its own, and about no place in this country has a greater mass of historical tradition collected. The Allure of Charleston by Susan Sully Pdf

The Allure of Charleston celebrates this historic city’s eighteenth- and nineteenth-century styles and demonstrates how they continue to be employed and updated by design professionals today. Anyone who loves houses and interiors loves Charleston. The Allure of Charleston shows why by delving into the architecture and interiors of the past and present. Exploring the question of what makes Charleston so distinct, Sully demonstrates why the language of its architecture, interior design, and gardens is so versatile and enduring. Examples of Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival architecture and of rooms containing an array of English, European, and American decorative details convey the complex harmony that characterizes the city’s houses. Featuring historic masterpieces including Drayton Hall, the Nathaniel Russell House, and Middleton Place, this volume also offers a look at present-day residences, among them a new house built faithfully to colonial style, a charming eighteenth-century dwelling with modern updates, a stunning Georgian town-house with a contemporary addition, and a sophisticated Federal home. The Allure of Charleston also includes a visual lexicon presenting the individual elements—wrought iron gates, garden statuary, pastel plaster walls, refined porcelain—that comprise the city’s style, making this exquisite book both informative and inspiring.

Town House by Bernard L. Herman Pdf

In this abundantly illustrated volume, Bernard Herman provides a history of urban dwellings and the people who built and lived in them in early America. In the eighteenth century, cities were constant objects of idealization, often viewed as the outward manifestations of an organized, civil society. As the physical objects that composed the largest portion of urban settings, town houses contained and signified different aspects of city life, argues Herman. Taking a material culture approach, Herman examines urban domestic buildings from Charleston, South Carolina, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as well as those in English cities and towns, to better understand why people built the houses they did and how their homes informed everyday city life. Working with buildings and documentary sources as diverse as court cases and recipes, Herman interprets town houses as lived experience. Chapters consider an array of domestic spaces, including the merchant family's house, the servant's quarter, and the widow's dower. Herman demonstrates that city houses served as sites of power as well as complex and often conflicted artifacts mapping the everyday negotiations of social identity and the display of sociability.
