Electoral Politics in Sri Lanka by S. I. Keethaponcalan Pdf

This volume examines and analyses electoral politics in Sri Lanka through the theoretical framework of manipulation. The following questions guided the study: how do political actors manipulate elections, and what are the salient features of electoral politics in Sri Lanka? Primary and secondary data formed the basis of the analysis, examining eight presidential elections. The research findings indicated that Sri Lankan governments, political parties and political leaders have taken advantage of six types of electoral manipulation, including constitutional tinkering, field fixing, time fixing, vote suppression, process manipulation and resource manipulation. Through a close examination of eight presidential elections, research carried out for the volume found that elections are often associated with violence; presidential elections are mainly a majoritarian affair in which minority communities play only a marginal role; there is a significant gender imbalance, as women’s participation in the electoral process is very limited; despite the presence of a large number of candidates contesting the election, it always remains a two-way race; and amid extensive manipulation and other problems, voter participation tends to be high. This volume will be a valuable resource for students, academics and researchers who focus on democracy, good governance, electoral studies and South Asian politics and history, and will enhance the conceptual foundation of democracy advocates and activists.

Dynamics of a Diplomacy Delayed by R. Sreekantan Nair Pdf

The book is bestowed with the unique feature of being the first comprehensive study ever made on India-Israel relations by an Indian Scholar. Indian had maintained a track record of marginalising the Jewish State ever since its inception. Apart from the political, diplomatic and strategic view points, India s diplomatic behaviour with respect to Israel was always a focus of controversy and criticism. Despite keeping friendly relation and even defence deals at times of crisis, the book argues, India resisted the request of Israel for diplomatic ties. The book, while examining this dynamism in India s foreign policy, takes deviation from the conventional research methods from the conventional research methods and trends and examines empirically the factors and forces that have guided India s relation towards Israel. The book objectively brings home the alchemy of policy shift and the potential possibilities and contradictions involved in the bilateral deal between the two States.

India's Foreign Policy and Diplomacy by C. Vinodan Pdf

After India gained Independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, it strongly supported independence movements in other colonies. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, was the architect of India's foreign policy. During the Cold War, India adopted a foreign policy of not aligning itself with any major power bloc. However, India developed close ties with the Soviet Union and received extensive military support from it. The end of the Cold War significantly affected India's foreign policy, as it did for much of the world. In the post-Cold War era, a significant aspect of India's foreign policy is the 'Look East Policy' launched in 1992. India's growing economy, strategic location, and a large and vibrant Diaspora have won it more allies and partners. The foreign policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicates a shift towards focusing on the Asian region and, more broadly, trade deals. This volume contains 9 research articles, authored by scholars in the field of political science, international relations, comparative politics, economics, security studies, and political economy. These contributions provide useful material to understand contemporary dynamics of India's foreign policy and diplomacy. Diplomacy & Diaspora by Dr Lm Singhvi Pdf

National Security at its simplest means the nation’s control of its borders and the preservation of its territorial integrity including its airspace and territorial waters. Above all, it means the protection of national institutions of governance and the freedom of the people without subversion, infiltration and disruption. On the other hand, there can be no real national security without international security. Diplomacy is an instrument of establishing and maintaining the equilibrium of national and international security. Both diplomacy and national security have their roots in the conceptual scheme and operational aspects of sovereignty, which is the hallmark of States. National security and diplomacy are inextricably interwoven. Indeed defence and diplomacy, the diplomat and the soldier have much in common except that their battle-lines and locations, their target areas, their weapons and equipment and their strategies and tactics are distinct and are tackled differently. Diplomacy is the defence of one’s country and its interests beyond its frontiers, but in a sense, diplomacy only an extension of national security. The intelligence network of the country both within the country and overseas plays a vital role in both in diplomacy and for national security.

Royal to Public Life by Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia with Mridula Sinha Pdf

I felt that to remain in politics and keep fighting for the principles was my calling. So, I thought that working with the people of similar ideology might be more fruitful. I felt affinity with those parties which were neither corrupt nor power-drunkÉ. Ideologically, I found myself close to Jana Sangh and Swatantra Party. I was in a dilemma to choose between the two. So, I decided to contest the election on the ticket of both these parties. I became candidate of Jana Sangh from Karera constituency of Madhya Pradesh Assembly. Tihar is not a jail, it is hell on earth. And those people were pushed in this hell whose penance threatened to dethrone Indiraji. There were piles of filth at different places in Tihar jail. It would make the inside air polluted which was stifling. While eating one had to constantly drive away the flies with oneÕs hands. The ears would be abuzz with the sounds of insects. In the darkness the brooch would glow and crickets would speak. Life was difficult. But despite that we would have sound sleep. Ayodhya is not a city made of bricks and mortars. It is a symbol of IndiaÕs soul and national identity. ThatÕs why when the Rath Yatra was taken out, Hindus and Muslims participated in it alike. This national integration caused heart burns to those vested interests that were in the habit of taking the advantage of social division.

Parliamentary Democracy In India by Dr Lm Singhvi Pdf

The most fundamental and far-reaching decision of India’s Constitution-makers was to establish the Indian democracy on the foundations of universal adult suffrage and on the principle of ‘one man; on vote’. The decision was an act of faith; homage to the people of India; implicit in the liberal outlook of India’s freedom struggle. The decision to adopt universal adult suffrage was simple and without controversy; but it was by all accounts momentous and revolutionary; making every adult Indian citizen irrespective of caste; sex and economic or educational qualification; a shareholder in India’s democratic enterprise. Consequent of that decision; India became the largest democracy in the world. The Indian Parliament exercises influence rather than power. Its functions lie primarily in processes of consultation and articulation and in the audit and scrutiny of the operations of the government. The substance of the power resides in the cabinet; and more particularly; in the office of the prime minister; but the sanction for that political power is provided by the representative principle embodied in the Parliament.
