Fundamentals of Nuclear Models by David J. Rowe,John L. Wood Pdf

This book reviews the basic models and theories of nuclear structure and gives an in-depth analysis of their experimental and mathematical foundations. It shows the relationships between the models and exhibits the value of following the strategy of: looking for patterns in all the data available, developing phenomenological models to explain them, and finally giving the models a foundation in a fundamental microscopic theory of interacting neutrons and protons. This unique book takes a newcomer from an introduction to nuclear structure physics to the frontiers of the subject along a painless path. It provides both the experimental and mathematical foundations of the essential models in a way that is accessible to a broad range of experimental and theoretical physicists. Thus, the book provides a unique resource and an exposition of the essential principles, mathematical structures, assumptions, and observational data on which the models and theories are based. It avoids discussion of many non-essential variations and technical details of the models.

New Methods in Computational Quantum Mechanics by Ilya Prigogine,Stuart A. Rice Pdf

The use of quantum chemistry for the quantitative prediction of molecular properties has long been frustrated by the technical difficulty of carrying out the needed computations. In the last decade there have been substantial advances in the formalism and computer hardware needed to carry out accurate calculations of molecular properties efficiently. These advances have been sufficient to make quantum chemical calculations a reliable tool for the quantitative interpretation of chemical phenomena and a guide to laboratory experiments. However, the success of these recent developments in computational quantum chemistry is not well known outside the community of practitioners. In order to make the larger community of chemical physicists aware of the current state of the subject, this self-contained volume of Advances in Chemical Physics surveys a number of the recent accomplishments in computational quantum chemistry. This stand-alone work presents the cutting edge of research in computational quantum mechanics. Supplemented with more than 150 illustrations, it provides evaluations of a broad range of methods, including: * Quantum Monte Carlo methods in chemistry * Monte Carlo methods for real-time path integration * The Redfield equation in condensed-phase quantum dynamics * Path-integral centroid methods in quantum statistical mechanics and dynamics * Multiconfigurational perturbation theory-applications in electronic spectroscopy * Electronic structure calculations for molecules containing transition metals * And more Contributors to New Methods in Computational Quantum Mechanics KERSTIN ANDERSSON, Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Chemical Center, Sweden DAVID M. Interactions by Anders Bengtsson Pdf

This book is an introduction to the theory of interacting higher spin gauge fields. It describes in a pedagogical way the methods used, and the results obtained, within the three major approaches to the subject: the Dirac light-front theory, the Fronsdal covariant approach and the Vasiliev AdS theory. Abstract concepts and methods unifying the various appproaches are pointed out. The book follows the ideas behind the first volume; explains the mathematical concepts and tools used, while also reviewing the history of the subject.

Matter Particled by Yuval Ne?eman,Remo Ruffini,Yosef Verbin Pdf

This unique volume contains a selection of more than 80 of Yuval Ne'eman's papers, which represent his huge contribution to a large number of aspects of theoretical physics. The works span more than four decades, from unitary symmetry and quarks to questions of complexity in biological systems and evolution of scientific theories. In keeping with the major role Ne'eman has played in theoretical physics over the last 40 years, a collaboration of very distinguished scientists enthusiastically took part in this volume. Their commentary supplies a clear framework and background for appreciating Yuval Ne'eman's significant discoveries and pioneering contributions.

Advances in Nuclear Physics by J.W. Negele,Erich W. Vogt Pdf

The quest for many-body techniques and approximations to describe the essential physics of strongly interacting systems with many degrees of freedom is one of the central themes of contemporary nuclear physics. The three articles in this volume describe advances in this quest in three dif ferent areas of nuclear many-body physics: multi quark degrees of freedom in nucleon-nucleon interactions and light nuclei, multinucleon clusters in many-nucleon wave functions and reactions, and the nuclear-shell model. In each case the common issues arise of identifying the relevant degrees of freedom, truncating those that are inessential, formulating tractable approximations, and judiciously invoking phenomenology when it is not possible to proceed from first principles. Indeed, the parallels between the different applications are often striking, as in the case of the similarities in the treatment of clusters of quarks in nucleon-nucleon interactions and clusters of nucleons in nuclear reactions, and the central role of the resonating group approximation in treating both. Despite two decades of effort since the experimental discovery of quarks in nucleons, we are still far from a derivation of nucleon structure and nucleon-nucleon interactions directly from quantum chromodynamics.

Symmetries in Science VII by Bruno Gruber,Takaharu Otsuka Pdf

The Symposium "Symmetries in Science VII: Spectrum Generating Algebras and Dynamic Symmetries in Physics" was held at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in Niigata, Japan Campus, during the period August 28-31, 1992. The Symposium was held in honor of Professor Francesco lachello on the occasion of his 50th birthday. We wish to thank the colleagues and friends of Franco for their participation in the Symposium as well as for contributing articles to this volume honoring him. It was their commitment and involvement which made this Symposium a success. We also wish to thank Dr. Jared H. Dorn, the director of SIUC-N, for his support in the planning and the execution of the Symposium. Moreover we wish to thank Mayor Nobuo Kumakura of Nakajo town and Mr. Kaichi Suzuki of the school entity "The Pacific" for their friendly support.
