Investing in Place by Sean Markey,Greg Halseth,Don Manson Pdf

The future of northern British Columbia, a vast, resource-rich region of vibrant cultures and diverse communities, could be either driven by a narrow economic agenda or guided by innovative, place-based solutions that seek to build viable communities and resilient local and regional economies. Investing in Place is about creating the foundations for renewing northern British Columbia’s rural and small-town economies. Markey, Halseth, and Manson argue that renewal is not about nostalgic reliance on the policies and economic strategies of the past – rather, it is about building a pragmatic and innovative vision for development, one that acknowledges both the opportunities and the challenges posed by resource development and global and technological change. For policy-makers and residents alike the path to renewal lies in place-based development, which consists of people working together at all levels of the community and region to take advantage of local opportunities in a sustainable, responsible way.

Global Links [electronic Resource] : Multinationals, Foreign Ownership and Productivity Growth in Canadian Manufacturing by John Russel Baldwin,Statistics Canada. Micro-Economic Analysis Division,Wulong Gu Pdf

This paper assesses the contribution that foreign-controlled plants make to the Canadian manufacturing sector by examining both whether foreign-controlled producers exhibit superior performance and whether their productivity growth spills over to domestic plants. In the first section, the performance of foreign-controlled plants is compared with domestic-controlled plants, using a variety of measures that include value added & gross output per worker, research & development, and technology used. The paper then asks whether foreign-controlled plants differ from those domestic producers that have foreign operations. The third section starts by measuring the contribution of foreign multinational enterprises to labour productivity growth in the Canadian manufacturing sector, then compares the importance of the contribution made by foreign-controlled plants to productivity growth in the 1990s to their contribution in the 1980s. At issue here is whether the relative importance of Canada as a destination for foreign direct investment declined during the 1990s as a result of two free trade agreements. Finally, the paper examines the following: whether productivity growth of domestic producers is higher when the market share of foreign producers is larger; the existence of a subset of domestic plants that benefits more from spillovers originating in foreign-controlled plants; and the presence of two mechanisms that generate spillovers: enhanced competition and the more intense use of advanced technologies by domestic firms.

Regional Dynamics by Kingsley E. Haynes,Kenneth Button,Peter Nijkamp Pdf

This series brings together major, previously published contributions to the field of regional science. Regional dynamics refers to the processes of change that occur within and among regions, with emphasis on the internal dynamics of regions but also including the interaction among regions induced by change. Fifty-two papers from such publications as J. of Economic Literature, Urban Geography, and International Regional Science Review address the causes and consequences of regional change resulting from human activities, especially those related to economic and social behavior; the process of integration across regions and the role of specific national policies are addressed elsewhere in the series. Second Growth by Sean Markey,John T Pierce,Kelly Vodden Pdf

This book is drawn from a three-year participatory research project with four communities in British Columbia: two municipalities and two Aboriginal communities. It examines historical and contemporary forces of restructuring, linking the development of rural communities with the legacy of resource development and Aboriginal marginalization across the province. The book then presents the theoretical and practical dynamics of the community economic development (CED) process and outlines a variety of strategies communities can initiate to diversify their local economies. Second Growth shows that sound theoretical frameworks and tested best practices are important tools in facilitating the prospects for a second growth in rural and small-town communities.
