The Routledge Handbook of Early Christian Art by Robin M. Jensen,Mark D. Ellison Pdf

The Routledge Handbook of Early Christian Art surveys a broad spectrum of Christian art produced from the late second to the sixth centuries. The first part of the book opens with a general survey of the subject and then presents fifteen essays that discuss specific media of visual art—catacomb paintings, sculpture, mosaics, gold glass, gems, reliquaries, ceramics, icons, ivories, textiles, silver, and illuminated manuscripts. Each is written by a noted expert in the field. The second part of the book takes up themes relevant to the study of early Christian art. These seven chapters consider the ritual practices in decorated spaces, the emergence of images of Christ’s Passion and miracles, the functions of Christian secular portraits, the exemplary mosaics of Ravenna, the early modern history of Christian art and archaeology studies, and further reflection on this field called “early Christian art.” Each of the volume’s chapters includes photographs of many of the objects discussed, plus bibliographic notes and recommendations for further reading. The result is an invaluable introduction to and appraisal of the art that developed out of the spread of Christianity through the late antique world. Undergraduate and graduate students of late classical, early Christian, and Byzantine culture, religion, or art will find it an accessible and insightful orientation to the field. Additionally, professional academics, archivists, and curators working in these areas will also find it valuable as a resource for their own research, as well as a textbook or reference work for their students.

The Genesis of Early Christian Art by Yukako Suzawa Pdf

In this wide-ranging study of the beginnings of Christian art, the author takes as her starting point the question of positive assimilation between Christian and non-Christian images in early Christian art. This study attempts to determine whether the theological term of syncretism can be appropriate to the study of early Christian art. During her study of the genesis of early Christian art, the author became aware that her attitude toward the notion of syncretism differs from most of the existing literature on early Christian art history and architecture. Some scholars have avoided using the notion of syncretism, and some have used it pejoratively to describe a mish-mash of religions, perhaps taking their cue from the doctrinal discussion of the term by the Church itself. In contrast, in the literature of the history of Japanese religions and art, religious synthesis has been referred to as 'syncretism,' and the term in that literature is defined as a blending of the ideas or practices of different religions that results in a unity of deities.

Early Christian Art and Architecture by Guntram Koch Pdf

The early Christian period, especially the time between the third and sixth centuries, is one of the most fascinating in church history. The Christianity which developed into a state church in the Roman empire during the fourth century gave new content to traditional Graeco-Roman art and adapted it to changed needs. Different forms of churches, monasteries and baptisms came into being, as did Christian art in paintings, mosaics and sculptures; biblical manuscripts were illustrated and liturgical furnishings and vessels were given new form. Here for the first time in a single volume is an account of architecture sacred and profane, funerary art in catacombs and tombs and especially sarcophagi, the graphic arts and the various forms of art in miniature. The text is illustrated with numerous line drawings and photographs, including ground plans and elevations of churches, actual and conjectural, and there are full descriptions of the art and architecture discussed against its social and historical background. In addition there are full bibliographies and details of the most important collections of Christian art. This will prove not only an invaluable work for art historians but also a guide for those travelling in the Mediterranean area and an indication of the riches of the first centuries of the church. Guntram Koch is Professor of Christian Archaeology and the History of Byzantine Art in the University of Marburg.

Early Christian Art by Eduard Syndicus Pdf

Outlines the history of Christian art from its beginning through the first six centuries of its development. It actually began with drawings on tombstones and in burial vaults. A study of such drawings clearly shows the gradual change in attitude brought about by Christianity: the first drawings portrayed everyday scenes in life but, as Christian teachings spread, the art began to depict man's thoughts of death and resurrection. The author presents a detailed discussion of the basilica, the martyrium, the early images of Christ, and the logos on the cross. He compares the various forms of early Christian architecture, and outlines the changing art of the period of migrations. A discussion of Carolingian art rounds out this definitive work.

Christ the Miracle Worker in Early Christian Art by Lee M. Jefferson Pdf

Images and artistic representations were of significant value to the early Christian communities. In Christ the Miracle Worker in Early Christian Art, Lee Jefferson argues, in fact, that images provided visual representations of vital religious and theological truths crucial to the faithful, by which art possessed the power to project concepts and claims beyond the limitations of the written and spoken word. Images of Christ performing miracles or healings, as demonstrated in this volume, functioned as advertisements for Christianity and illustrated explications of the nature of Christ. These images of Christ as worker of miracles and healing form the nucleus of an extensive examination of this power of art, its role in fostering devotion, and the deep connection between art and its underwriting and elucidation of pivotal theological claims and developments. The Clash of Gods by Thomas F. Mathews Pdf

Between the third and sixth centuries, the ancient gods, goddesses, and heroes who had populated the imagination of humankind for a millennium were replaced by a new imagery of Christ and his saints. Thomas Mathews explores the many different, often surprising, artistic images and religious interpretations of Christ during this period. He challenges the accepted theory of the "Emperor Mystique," which, interpreting Christ as king, derives the vocabulary of Christian art from the propagandistic imagery of the Roman emperor. This revised edition contains a new preface by the author and a new chapter on the origin and development of icons in private domestic cult.
