Detroit Then and Now® by Cheri Y. Gay Pdf

Founded in 1701 by Antoine de le Mothe Cadillac as a trading post and fort, Detroit had a turbulent early history. Captured by the British in 1760, ceded to the United States in 1783, and destroyed by fire in 1805, Detroit nevertheless prospered throughout the nineteenth century because of its strategic position. The twentieth century saw the rise and demise of the auto industry and despite the city’s troubled recent past, a new Detroit is rising to meet the economic challenges of the twenty-first century. This book is a fascinating document of history and change in one of the United States’ most important cities.Sites include: Woodward Avenue, Detroit Waterfront, Campus Martius, Jefferson Avenue, Cadillac Square, Capitol Park, J.L. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... woodward avlnul in thl thirtils. trials of the pioneer residents I call to mind but a very few dwellings on Woodward Avenue in 1830, or for some years after. Where the Holden Road (now Palmer Avenue) came into Woodward was a dense forest; it seemed when you entered it as though you were about to explore the unknown. There is a small house now standing on the corner of Woodward and Warren Avenues that was there in 1830 and before. The Brush estate had a farm house at about Eliot Street, fronting on Woodward Avenue. Considerably later on, B. G. Stimson purchased quite a plot of ground on the corner of what is now Stimson Place, and on it erected the dwelling that is. there still. Many wondered why he went so far out when so many more eligible sites were available much nearer the city. Mr. Stimson and his wife were both young, genial and. being quite socially inclined, attracted the young, the gay and the dancing element to their hospitable residence. The only seeming drawback was the trouble getting there during the winter and spring, and sometimes it was more than seeming, as occasionally the snow or mud so blocked the avenue that it was quite an undertaking to do so, and taxed the capacity of the limited number of hacks and cabs to take care of the crowd. On these occasions the French cart was much in evidence. B. G. Stimson learned the ship chandlery business, or what the needs of a sailing craft were in that line, on a voyage around the Horn before the mast, and up along the South American coast, on a sailing vessel, collecting hides, etc. He was a fellow sailor with R. H. Dana, Jr., who wrote that highly entertaining book, "Two Years Before the Mast." Our esteemed townsman, Harry W

Detroit by David Lee Poremba Pdf

On July 24, 1701, Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac stood in the heart of the wilderness on a bluff overlooking the Detroit River and claimed this frontier in the name of Louis XIV; thus began the story of Detroit, a city marked by pioneering spirits, industrial acumen, and uncommon durability. Over the course of its 300-year history, Detroit has been sculpted into a city unique in the American experience by its extraordinary mixture of diverse cultures: American Indian, French, British, American colonial, and a variety of immigrant newcomers. Detroit: A Motor City History documents the major events that shaped this once-small French fur-trading outpost across three centuries of conflict and prosperity. Through informative text and a variety of imagery, readers experience firsthand the struggles of the nascent village against raiding Indian tribes and the incessant political and military tug of war between the colonial French and English, and then American interests. Like many other major cities across the United States, Detroit played a pivotal role in establishing the country's economic and industrial power in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, serving as a center for its well-known civilian and military mass-production resources. This visual history provides insight into Detroit's rapid evolution from a hamlet into a metropolis against a backdrop of important community and national affairs: the decimating fire of 1805, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and both world wars.

The End of Detroit by Micheline Maynard Pdf

An in-depth, hard-hitting account of the mistakes, miscalculations and myopia that have doomed America’s automobile industry. In the 1990s, Detroit’s Big Three automobile companies were riding high. The introduction of the minivan and the SUV had revitalized the industry, and it was widely believed that Detroit had miraculously overcome the threat of foreign imports and regained its ascendant position. As Micheline Maynard makes brilliantly clear in THE END OF DETROIT, however, the traditional American car industry was, in fact, headed for disaster. Maynard argues that by focusing on high-profit trucks and SUVs, the Big Three missed a golden opportunity to win back the American car-buyer. Foreign companies like Toyota and Honda solidified their dominance in family and economy cars, gained market share in high-margin luxury cars, and, in an ironic twist, soon stormed in with their own sophisticatedly engineered and marketed SUVs, pickups and minivans. Detroit, suffering from a “good enough” syndrome and wedded to ineffective marketing gimmicks like rebates and zero-percent financing, failed to give consumers what they really wanted—reliability, the latest technology and good design at a reasonable cost. Drawing on a wide range of interviews with industry leaders, including Toyota’s Fujio Cho, Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn, Chrysler’s Dieter Zetsche, BMW’s Helmut Panke, and GM’s Robert Lutz, as well as car designers, engineers, test drivers and owners, Maynard presents a stark picture of the culture of arrogance and insularity that led American car manufacturers astray. Maynard predicts that, by the end of the decade, one of the American car makers will no longer exist in its present form.

Working Detroit by Steve Babson Pdf

Babson recounts Detroit's odyssey from a bulwark of the "open shop" to the nation's foremost "union town." Through words and pictures, Working Detroit documents the events in the city's ongoing struggle to build an industrial society that is both prosperous and humane. Babson begins his account in 1848 when Detroit has just entered the industrial era. He weaves the broader historical realties, such as Red Scare, World War, and economic depression into his account, tracing the ebb and flow of the working class activity and organization in Detroit -- from the rise of the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor in the 19th century, through the Congress of Industrial Organizations and the sitdown strike of the 1930s, to the civil rights and women's movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The book concludes with an examination of the present day crisis facing the labor movement.

The Last Days of Detroit by Mark Binelli Pdf

* It was 'the most modern city in the world, the city of tomorrow'. But the Fifties witnessed one of the greatest economic slides of the last century, as Detroit, formerly a beacon of the capitalist dream, degenerated into the urban wilderness it is today, where trees grow from the rooftops of derelict buildings and wild pheasants roam the long-empty parking lots. * By the end of the nineteenth century Detroit was thriving. 1913 saw the arrival of Henry Ford and the Model T plant, mass-producing cars and transforming the area into the Silicon Valley of its day. By the mid-1950s General Motors had become the single biggest employer on earth, and Detroit the fourth largest city in America. * But by the time Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1960 - creating Detroit's other great assembly line - the cracks were already beginning to show- big industry was looking elsewhere for cheaper sites, cheaper labour and better tax breaks; urban planning was in meltdown; corruption was rife; racial tensions were running high. * The 1967 riots - at the time the worst in US history - left 43 dead, more than 7,000 arrested and 3,000 buildings destroyed. Detroit, a former beacon of the capitalist dream, had degenerated into an urban wilderness where unemployment ran at 50%. With more guns in the city than people, the murder rate was the highest in America - three times that of New York. * Mark Binelli returned to live in his native Detroit after a break of many years. He tells the story of the boom and the bust - and of the new society to be found emerging from the debris- Detroit with its urban farms and vibrant arts scene - Detroit as a laboratory for the post-industrial, post-recession world. Here's what an iconic rust-belt city now looks like and how it might transform and regenerate itself in the twenty-first century.
