Eberhard Arnold by Woodcrest Service Committee,Eberhard Arnold Pdf

For a concise, readable introduction to the writings of a man who, in his search for Christ, spent his life turning conventional Christianity on its head, this is a good place to start. Eberhard Arnold (1883-1935) is relatively unknown today, yet in his prime his impact was felt by hundreds of thousands, and his life's work bears fruit today as few lives have. In 1920, venturing into an unknown future -- and leaving wealth, security, and a public speaking career -- he moved with his wife Emmy from Berlin to a tiny village, where they founded a small community on the basis of early church practices as described in the Book of Acts. Contains a biographical sketch, selections from his most important works, and brief memoirs by friends and colleagues.

The Prayer God Answers by Eberhard Arnold,Richard J. Foster Pdf

Why has God not answered my prayers? What should I be praying for? If everything I prayed for came true, would I be ready? In this spiritual classic, Eberhard Arnold mines the riches of biblical teaching on prayer and the example of Jesus, the Hebrew prophets, and the early Christians to point us back to the prayer that pleases God most - prayer that has the power to transform our lives and our world. The Individual and World Need by Eberhard Arnold Pdf

One of Arnold's most compelling works, this essay explores the relationship of the individual to world sin and suffering and directs us clearly to a solution. Enlivened by a wide variety of anecdotal illustrations -- from the ancient myth of Prometheus to the expressionist Franz Werfel -- Arnold's message is simple but revolutionary: only by overcoming the cancerous selfishness of individualism can we overcome the need of the world and enter into a life of unity and love. It is the old truth: He that loses his life shall find it.

A wellspring of remarkable depth, Eberhard Arnold's classic work invites readers to respond to the chaos of a society distracted by violence and greed by turning to that "inner land of the invisible, where our spirit can find the roots of its strength." Only there, he says, will we find the clarity of vision we need to win the daily battle that is life.

A Christian Peace Experiment by Ian M. Randall Pdf

This book examines part of the development of the Bruderhof community, which emerged in Germany in 1920. Community members sought to model their life on the New Testament. This included sharing goods. The community became part of the Hutterite movement, with its origins in sixteenth-century Anabaptism. After the rise to power of the Nazi regime, the Bruderhof became a target and the community was forcibly dissolved. Members who escaped from Germany and travelled to England were welcomed as refugees from persecution and a community was established in the Cotswolds. In the period 1933 to 1942, when the Bruderhof's witness was advancing in Britain, its members were in touch with many individuals and movements. This book covers the Bruderhof's connections with (among others) the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Peace Pledge Union, the social work of Muriel and Doris Lester in East London, Jewish refugee groups, and artistic pioneers like Eric Gill. As significant numbers of British people joined the Bruderhof, its farming, publishing and arts and crafts activities extended considerably. But with the outbreak of the Second World War, German members came to be regarded with suspicion and British members became unpopular locally because they were pacifists. Although the Bruderhof was defended in Parliament, notably by Lady Astor, it seemed that German members would be interned as enemy aliens. The consequence was that by 1942 over 300 community members had left England. With Mennonite assistance, they began to forge a new life in South America. This book traces a remarkable Christian peace experiment being undertaken in a time of great political upheaval.

Fifty-two readings on living in intentional Christian community to spark group discussion. Gold Medal Winner, 2017 Illumination Book Awards, Christian Living Silver Medal Winner, 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award in Religion, Independent Book Publishers Association Why, in an age of connectivity, are our lives more isolated and fragmented than ever? And what can be done about it? The answer lies in the hands of God's people. Increasingly, today's Christians want to be the church, to follow Christ together in daily life. From every corner of society, they are daring to step away from the status quo and respond to Christ's call to share their lives more fully with one another and with others. As they take the plunge, they are discovering the rich, meaningful life that Jesus has in mind for all people, and pointing the church back to its original calling: to be a gathered, united community that demonstrates the transforming love of God. Of course, such a life together with others isn't easy. The selections in this volume are, by and large, written by practitioners--people who have pioneered life in intentional community and have discovered in the nitty-gritty of daily life what it takes to establish, nurture, and sustain a Christian community over the long haul. Whether you have just begun thinking about communal living, are already embarking on sharing life with others, or have been part of a community for many years, the pieces in this collection will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you. The book's fifty-two chapters can be read one a week to ignite meaningful group discussion. Contributors include: John F. Alexander, Eberhard Arnold, J. The Other Side of Joy by Julius Rubin Pdf

This is a case study of one pietist religious group, the Bruderhof. A Christian brotherhood founded on Anabaptist and evangelical pietist doctrine, they practice community of goods, seeking to emulate the vision of the Apostolic church and fulfill the ethic of brotherhood taught in the Sermon on the Mount. Rubin offers compelling accounts of the lives of Bruderhof apostates who foundered over issues of faith, and relates these crises to the central tenets of Bruderhof theology, their spirituality, and community life.

Salt and Light by Eberhard Arnold Pdf

Arnold calls us to build up a just, peaceable society motivated by love. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus puts aside his usual parables and speaks plainly in language anyone can understand. Like Francis of Assisi and others, Arnold chose to live out Jesus' teachings by embracing their self- sacrificing demands. In this collection of talks and essays, he calls us to live for the Sermon's ultimate goal: the overturning of the prevailing order of injustice. In its place, Arnold writes, we must build up a just, peaceable society motivated by love.
