The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power by Reinhard Haas,Lutz Mez,Amela Ajanovic Pdf

This open access book discusses the eroding economics of nuclear power for electricity generation as well as technical, legal, and political acceptance issues. The use of nuclear power for electricity generation is still a heavily disputed issue. Aside from technical risks, safety issues, and the unsolved problem of nuclear waste disposal, the economic performance is currently a major barrier. In recent years, the costs have skyrocketed especially in the European countries and North America. At the same time, the costs of alternatives such as photovoltaics and wind power have significantly decreased. Contents History and Current Status of the World Nuclear Industry The Dramatic Decrease of the Economics of Nuclear Power Nuclear Policy in the EU The Legacy of Csernobyl and Fukushima Nuclear Waste and Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants Alternatives: Heading Towards Sustainable Electricity Systems Target Groups Researchers and students in the fields of political, economic and technical sciences Energy (policy) experts, nuclear energy experts and practitioners, economists, engineers, consultants, civil society organizations The Editors Prof. Dr. Reinhard Haas is University Professor of energy economics at the Institute of Energy Systems and Electric Drives at Technische Universität Wien, Austria. PD Dr. Lutz Mez is Associate Professor at the Department for Political and Social Sciences of Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. PD Dr. Amela Ajanovic is a senior researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Energy Systems and Electrical Drives at Technische Universität Wien, Austria.--

Economics of Atomic Energy by Mary Goldring Pdf

Economics of Atomic Energy covers the historical developments and major trends in atomic energy and its utilization. This book is organized into three parts encompassing 10 chapters that emphasize the economic aspect of nuclear power. The first part provides an overview of the status of atomic industry, from uranium supply to production and uses of fissile materials. This part looks into the accurate measurement of the national incomes that have pressed ahead with atomic development and how much of the national resources have diverted to atomic research. The second part deals first with the increasing demand for cheaper energy, followed by the assessment of factors affecting the costs of nuclear reactor. The third part discusses Britain's atomic investment on research. This part also considers the other countries' atomic industry methods, including U.S.A., France, and Germany. This book will be of value to nuclear physicists, economists, and policy makers.

The Economics of Nuclear Energy by L. G. Brookes Pdf

When we first contemplated a book on this subject we were faced with a number of options: (a) to write it all ourselves, which would have had the merit of internal consistency and continuity of style; (b) to produce a collection of existing papers. which would have given us expert views in the various sub-fields of the economics of nuclear energy and would have put us in the position of knowing from the start exactly what the authors' contribu tions would be: (c) to commission contributions from individual specialists, chapter by chapter; or (d) some combination of these options. We settled for the last - we have written some of the material ourselves, have obtained permission to use some existing papers that seem to us to be valuable contributions to the subject, and have been fortunate in persuading a number of eminent people in their fields to produce papers especially for the book. This has given us a great deal of work and taken up more time than we planned for but we believe the result justifies this time and effort. It enabled us to design a structure for the book from the outset, recognizing that there are several aspects to the economics of nuclear energy - especially if we take a broad view of what is embraced by the word 'economics'.

Economic Aspects of Atomic Power by Sam H. Schurr,Jacob Marschak Pdf

Economists of the Cowles Commission of the University of Chicago present the first comprehensive study of the long-range effects on world economy of atomic power and its implications for industries producing oil, coal, and electric power. The study includes a consideration of the characteristics of atomic power, covering source and cost of fuels, type of equipment and initial investment required, etc., and an analysis, estimating the future effects of atomic power on residential heating and on the industries producing aluminum, iron and steel, flat glass, phosphate fertilizers, fixed nitrogen, chlorine, caustic soda, cement, bricks, railroad transportation. The final chapter discusses the possibilities of atomic power in industrialization of backward areas. Originally published in 1950. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

General Report on the Economics of the Peaceful Uses of Underground Nuclear Explosions by Oskar Morgenstern,Klaus-Peter Heiss Pdf

The Plowshare program of the Atomic Energy Commission sets forth to put nuclear explosives to peaceful, economic use. The present report evaluates the major fields of application proposed up to now for such explosives. They are the stimulation of gas and oil reservoirs, production of shale oil, applications to mining, cratering, and a list of various other projects, among them storage of natural gas, waste disposal and water resource management.

Energy Economics by Thomas R. Sadler Pdf

Energy Economics: Science, Policy, and Economic Applications explains energy systems from an economics perspective. Specifically, the author uses the tools of economics to analyze the development of modern energy systems, the world’s reliance on fossil fuels, and the components of a transition to cleaner energy resources. He also considers the science and policy underlying important energy issues, especially with respect to nuclear energy and the climate crisis, arguing that, without changes to the world’s fossil fuel consumption patterns, an increase in demand for energy will exacerbate environmental problems. This reality demonstrates the importance of the book's analysis of primary energy sources, energy supply and demand, and energy systems. Energy matters are fundamental to our way of life; yet, when it comes to energy economics, many people do not have a working vocabulary.

Market Potential for Non-electric Applications of Nuclear Energy by Anonim Pdf

This report assesses short and long term market trends for the non-electric applications of nuclear energy up to the year 2020 and for the period 2020-2050. It focuses on the following applications: district heating, desalination (of sea, brackish and waste water), industrial heat supply, ship propulsion and the energy supply for spacecraft; with the emphasis placed on economic and other factors that may promote or hinder the growth of these markets. The book is structured by demand categories rather than possible reactor types; and each section considers a specific non-electric application in terms of its market size, the prospects for nuclear technologies and the economic competitiveness of the technologies.
