Economic Development Patterns, Inflations, and Distributions by Byung Ok Lim Pdf

The focal point of this study, first published in 1991, is to investigate the effect of growth patterns on inflation and the distribution of income through inductive examination of the particular experiences in Korea and Taiwan. Both countries are regarded as models of successful industrialization, but contrast significantly in the matter of their development strategy yielding a more equitable distribution of income, along with a moderate inflation from the benefits of economic growth. Korea experienced considerable rates of inflation and a worsening of the distribution of income, while Taiwan avoided both economic evils. This book analyses how Taiwan’s economy managed to reconcile growth with inflation and distribution and why Korea could not achieve similar performance.

Changing Patterns in the Distribution of Economic Welfare by Peter Gottschalk,Bjorn A. Gustafsson,Edward E. Palmer Pdf

This 1997 book examines the income distributional experience of fifteen developed economies - representing a wide range of social and economic strategies - over the past two decades. Experts from each of the countries have carefully documented the pattern of distributional change in individual earnings and household income in their countries and analysed the driving forces behind these changes. Separate chapters are devoted to the experiences of Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, West and former East Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. The authors examine the effects on the inequality of household income of the development of individual earnings, unemployment, inflation, public sector transfers and taxes, and demographic changes.

Inflation and Income Distribution by Mr.Ales Bulir,Ms.Anne Marie Gulde Pdf

This paper examines the effects of inflation and associated financial instability on income distribution. Using both pooled cross country and single country time series models, the level of inflation, inflation variability, and the variability of the nominal exchange rate are shown to impact negatively on overall income equality. Looking at disaggregate measures of income distribution, the issue as to whether inflation is a progressive or regressive tax is found to be negatively correlated with the level of development and the sophistication of the financial structure. The paper argues that these results point towards financial variables as a partial way of rectifying the generally poor explanatory power of both cross-country and time series models of income distribution.

Economic Growth in Theory and Practice by R. Sundrum Pdf

The book describes the practical process of economic growth both in developed and less developed countries, and presents a unified theory of growth from the earliest stages to the most advanced. Central to the theory is the structural transformation which is associated with the growth process. This structural transformation is used to explain the logistic pattern that economic growth has followed in the real world. Within this logistic pattern, growth performance is explained both in terms of supply factors and demand factors, and the interaction between them. The influence of inflation and income distribution on economic growth is also discussed.

Patterns of Development in Latin America by John Sheahan Pdf

In this major work an economist with long experience as an advisor in developing countries explores the conflict between market forces and political reform that has led straight into Latin America's most serious problems. John Sheahan addresses three central concerns: the persistence of poverty in Latin American countries despite rising national incomes, the connection between economic troubles and political repression, and the relationships between Latin America and the rest of the world in trade and finance, as well as overall dependence. His comprehensive explanation of why many Latin Americans identify open political systems with frustration and economic breakdown will interest not only economists but also a broad range of other social scientists. This is "political economy" in the classical sense of the word, establishing a clear connection between the political and economic realities of Latin America.

Exports, Inflation, and Growth by Thorvaldur Gylfason Pdf

This paper identifies some of the main determinants of exports and economic growth in cross-sectional data from the World Bank, covering 160 countries in the period 1985-1994. First, the linkages between the propensity to export and population, per capita income, agriculture, primary exports, and inflation are studied by statistical methods. Then, the relationship between economic growth and some of the above-mentioned determinants of exports and investment are scrutinized the same way. The main conclusion is that, in the period under review, high inflation and an abundance of natural resources tended to be associated with low exports and slow growth.
