East-West Economic Relations by Abraham Samuel Becker,Rand Corporation Pdf
1982 WAS THE YEAR East-West economics became the smoldering focus of Atlantic relations. No other issue generated as much heat or as much trans-Atlantic diplomatic shuttling. 1983, in sharp contrast, has been largely devoid of conflict on this issue. Now, INF deployment and arms control have become the hinge of alliance politics. The Versailles economic summit of June 1982 was dominated by two subjects, U.S. interest rates and East-West trade. In May 1983 the Williamsburg summit communique devoted three sentences to East-West trade, and the press reports do not suggest much time was spent composing them. Has the explosiveness of East-West economics as an alliance problem been permanently defused? It might be argued that the storms of 1982 were associated with a unique conjuncture of events--the Polish crisis and the concluding phases of the gas pipeline deal. Yet, if this particular conjuncture was unique, the events were bound up with recurrent issues. So it was in the past and so it seems likely to be in the future.

National Security And Technology Transfer by Gary K. Bertsch Pdf
The deterioration of detente in the wake of the ongoing Soviet arms build-up has sharply focused the East-West trade debate on the question of advanced technology transfer from the United States and its allies to the Soviet bloc. The transfer and acquisition of high technology have become central ingredients in super-power relations and are key elements of any national security policy. President Reagan, among others, has questioned the wisdom of the policies of the 1960s and early 1970s, when trade with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe expanded rapidly. At recent industrial nation summits, conferees of Western countries agreed to high-level review of their East-West technology trade policies. But in light of the apparent West European commitment to continue and expand trade with the East, as exemplified by the Siberian gas pipeline project, and the growing U.S. opposition to such technology transfer, divisions between U.S. and Western trade policies toward the East are likely to become increasingly acute in the years ahead. Professors Bertsch and McIntyre have selected comprehensive and representative articles to examine the question of technology transfer from a variety of perspectives--political, economic, and military- emphasizing both the U.S. and the Western allies' points of view and offering insights into the complex issues raised by the strategic dimensions of East-West trade.

Economic Prospects - East and West (Routledge Revivals) by Jan Winiecki Pdf
First published in 1987, this is an analysis of the contemporary breakdown of political and economic systems within the Eastern European communist countries. Rather than passively following the developments of this crisis, the author seeks instead to identify the reasons for failure and to examine alternative policies that offer solutions to these problems. Jan Winiecki 's work offers a comparative study of the Soviet-type economies of the East with the market economies of the West; providing a cause and effect analysis of each model, with possible scenarios for their future prospects.

The Soviet Economy by Morris Bornstein Pdf
The economic system of the Soviet Union is of vital interest not merely because the USSR is a world superpower but also because the Soviets offer their economic development strategy and system as a model to Third World nations seeking rapid development and social change. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the evolution and operation of the Soviet economy, its external economic relations, and the challenges it faces in the next decade. The selections describe the nature and difficulties of Soviet economic planning and the wide range of legal and illegal unplanned activities in the Soviet economy today. They examine also the involvement of citizens as both producers and consumers. The closing section looks at prospects for the future in the areas of agriculture, energy, and technological development.
