Edmund Dulac's Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac Pdf

The old wife sang merrily as she sat in the inglenook stirring the soup, for she had never felt so sad. Many, many years had come and gone, leaving the weight of their winters on her shoulders and the touch of snow on her hair without ever bringing her a little child. This made her and her dear old husband very sad, for there were many children outside, playing in the snow. It seemed hard that not even one among them was their very own. But alas! there was no hope for such a blessing now. Never would they see a little fur cap hanging on the corner of the mantelpiece, nor two little shoes drying by the fire. The old husband brought in a bundle of wood and set it down. Then, as he heard the children laughing and clapping their hands outside, he looked out at the window. There they were, dancing with glee round a snow man they had made. He smiled as he saw that it was evidently meant to look like the Mayor of the village, it was so fat and pompous. 'Look, Marusha!' he cried to the old wife. 'Come and see the snow man they've made.' As they stood together at the window, they laughed to see what fun the children got out of it. Suddenly the old man turned to her with a bright idea. 'Let's go out and see if we can't make a little snow man.' But Marusha laughed at him. 'What would the neighbours say? They would poke fun at us; it'd be the joke of the village. Besides, we're too old to play like children.' 'But only a little one, Marusha; only a teeny-weeny little snow man,—and I'll manage it that nobody sees us.' 'Well, well,' she said, laughing; 'have your own way, as you always did, Youshko.' With this she took the pot from the fire, put on her bonnet, and they went out together. As they passed the children, they stopped to play with them a while, for they now felt almost like children themselves. Then they trudged on through the snow till they came to a clump of trees, and, behind this, where the snow was nice and white, and nobody could see them, they set to work to make their little man. The old husband insisted that it must be very small, and the old wife agreed that it should be almost as small as a new-born babe. Kneeling down in the snow, they fashioned the little body in next to no time. Now there remained only the head to finish. Two fat handfuls of snow for the cheeks and face, and a big one on top for the head. Then they put on a wee dab for the nose and poked two holes, one on each side, for the eyes.

EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON - 15 illustrated Old Tales from the North by Anon E. Mouse Pdf

Step into a world of star-crossed lovers, magical winds, mischievous giants, and trolls, through some of the most exquisite illustrations in publishing history. In this gorgeous abridged edition, the most ambitious publication project of beloved Danish artist Kay Nielsen, one of the most famous children's book illustrators of all time is revives. First published in 1914, East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a celebrated collection of fairy tales gathered by legendary Norwegian folklorists Peter Christen Asbjornsen and Jorgen Engebretsen Moe on their journeys across Norway in the mid-19th century. Nielsen's illustration edition of Asbjornsen and Moe's tales is considered a jewel of early 20th-century children's literature, highly sought-after by art and book collectors worldwide. An original signed copy of the book sold at auction in 2008 commanded the highest price ever paid for an illustrated children's book. This finely crafted volume presents 15 of the original fairytales, and restores the stunning detail and artistry of Nielsen's images to their original splendour. Featuring 46 illustrations, 25 in colour and 21 Black and White, which include many enlarged details from Nielsen's rare original watercolours. The stories herein explore the history of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian folktales, and show the extent of Nielsen's life and work, and how this masterpiece came to be. Edmund Dulac's Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac Pdf

Edmund Dulac's Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac. Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen whose marriage was as happy as happy could be; they loved each other tenderly, and, in turn, their subjects loved them; but one thing clouded their life: and that was that they had no children, no heir. The Queen thought that the King would love her much more if she had a child. So she made up her mind to drink of the water of a certain spring. People came there in thousands from afar to drink of this special kind of water; and one saw so many that it looked as though all the world and his wife were there. Now there were many, many lovely fountains in the wood where the Queen and other people went to drink at the spring; so the Queen asked her ladies to lead the others away to these fountains to amuse themselves, and leave her alone. Then, when they had all withdrawn, she bewailed in a plaintive voice.

FOLK TALES OF FANTASTIC BEASTS AND MEN - 24 Illustrated Folk and Fairy Tales by Anon E. Mouse Pdf

It is rather poignant that this collection of Folk and Fairy Tales from the Flanders region of Belgium was published in 1918, for in the closing stage of the Great War I don’t think there were many, soldiers and civilians living in Flanders, who in 1918 had the fantasy world of folk and fairy tales foremost in mind. Herein are 24 well illustrated tales from the Flanders region of Belgium illustrated by Jean De Bosschère. Also included are 12 full page colour plates plus 106 pen and ink illustrations. To make the volume even more sumptuous, each story has an individually illustrated drop capital. Some of the stories in this superb volume are: Ups And Downs The Three Monkeys How The Goldfinch Got His Colours The Cock And The Fox Sponsken And The Giant The Choristers Of St. Gudule The Magic Cap Sugar-Candy House Poor Peter The Peasant And His Ass The Reward Of The World and many more. So we invite you to download this volume, settle back with a steaming hot toddy, and be prepared to be entertained by this most enjoyable volume from yesteryear. 10% of the net profit will be donated to charities. REVIEWS from 1918: “This handsome and well-illustrated book is one of the most attractive we have seen this season. It gives us renderings of the popular fables and legends current in Flanders and Brabant which have a colour and quaintness of their own, yet combines adventures with an unobtrusive and so more effective moral.”—Saturday Review. “There are delightful stories; even more attractive than the letterpress are M. de Bosschère’s illustrations. Conceived with inexhaustible fancy, full of quaint detail, and set down with a fascinating naïveté they embody the characters and scenes of the tales with a fullness of particularism that should provide endless entertainment to youthful readers. They are the best and most complete series of designs yet produced by the artist.”—Connoisseur. “The illustrations by Jean de Bosschère are of a droll fancy. The artist has a notable power of the grotesque, and both in colour and black and white he uses it.”—Daily Telegraph.
