Electric Transportation Systems in Smart Power Grids by Hassan Haes Alhelou,Ali Moradi Amani,Samaneh Sadat Sajjadi,Mahdi Jalili Pdf

The leading countries around the globe, including Australia, have taken serious steps to decarbonize their energy and transportation sectors as part of their obligations for a suitable future with fewer emissions and a better environment. The decarbonization plans in different countries have resulted in changes such as increases in the penetration level of renewable energy sources and the introduction of electric vehicles as a target for future transportation systems. This is the point where mobility meets electricity and brings new challenges and opportunities, especially in the integration with modern power systems. The main impact would be on the demand-side and the distribution network. These impacts would be also reflected in the operation, control, security, and stability of transmission systems. This creates a new grid architecture characterized by a growing variability and uncertainties. Moreover, the growth in the share of renewable energy in the total energy market is one of the major causes of the increasing fluctuations in the balance between generation and consumption in the whole system. Therefore, the key challenge lies in developing new concepts to ensure the effective integration of distributed energy resources and electric transportation systems, including EVs, into existing and future market structures. Electric Transportation Systems in Smart Power Grids address how these issues—EVs, E-buses, and other smart appliances on the demand side—can be aggregated to form virtual power plants, which are considered an efficient solution to provide operational flexibility to the grid. The book also discusses how EV-based virtual power plants can also provide myriad services for distribution system operators, transmission system operators, and even local prosumers within the energy community. Features: Describes the services required to power systems from EVs and electric transportation sector Covers frequency control in modern power systems using aggregated EVs Discusses the integration and interaction between EVs and Smart grids Introduces electric vehicle aggregation methods for supporting power systems Highlights flexibility provided from electric transportation system to smart energy sector Discusses the high penetration level of renewable energy sources and EVs

Smart Grids from a Global Perspective by Anne Beaulieu,Jaap De Wilde,Jacquelien M.A. Scherpen Pdf

This book presents a cross-disciplinary approach to smart grids, offering an invaluable basis for understanding their complexity and potential, and for discussing their technical, legal, economic, societal, psychological and security aspects. Smart grids are a complex phenomenon involving new, active roles for consumers and prosumers, novel social, political and cultural practices, advanced ICT, new markets, security of supply issues, the informational turn in energy, valuation of assets and investments, technological innovation and (de)regulation. Furthermore, smart grids offer new interfaces, in turn creating hybrid fields: with the increasing use of electric vehicles and electric transportation, smart grids represent the crossroads of energy and mobility. While the aim is to achieve more sustainable production, transportation and use of energy, the importance of smart grids actually has less to do with electricity, heat or gas, and far more with transforming the infrastructure needed to deliver energy, as well as the roles of its owners, operators and users. The immediate goal is to contribute positively to a sustainable world society. The chapters are revised and expanded texts based upon lectures delivered at the Groningen Energy Summer School 2014. Questions for further discussion at the end of each chapter highlight the key themes that emerge. The book offers an indispensable resource for researchers, professionals and companies in the power supply industry, and for students seeking to broaden and deepen their understanding of smart grids.

The On-line Electric Vehicle by Nam P. Suh,Dong Ho Cho Pdf

This book details the design and technology of the on-line electric vehicle (OLEV) system and its enabling wireless power-transfer technology, the “shaped magnetic field in resonance” (SMFIR). The text shows how OLEV systems can achieve their three linked important goals: reduction of CO2 produced by ground transportation; improved energy efficiency of ground transportation; and contribution to the amelioration or prevention of climate change and global warming. SMFIR provides power to the OLEV by wireless transmission from underground cables using an alternating magnetic field and the reader learns how this is done. This cable network will in future be part of any local smart grid for energy supply and use thereby exploiting local and renewable energy generation to further its aims. In addition to the technical details involved with design and realization of a fleet of vehicles combined with extensive subsurface charging infrastructure, practical issues such as those involved with pedestrian safety are considered. Furthermore, the benefits of reductions in harmful emissions without recourse to large banks of batteries are made apparent. Importantly, the use of Professor Suh’s axiomatic design paradigm enables such a complicated transportation system to be developed at reasonable cost and delivered on time. The book covers both the detailed design and the relevant systems-engineering knowledge and draws on experience gained in the successful implementation of OLEV systems in four Korean cities. The introduction to axiomatic design and the in-depth discussion of system and technology development provided by The On-line Electric Vehicle is instructive to graduate students in electrical, mechanical and transportation engineering and will help engineers and designers to master the efficient, timely and to-cost implementation of large-scale networked systems. Managers responsible for the running of large transportation infrastructure projects and concerned with technology management more generally will also find much to interest them in this book.

Sustainable Interdependent Networks II by M. Hadi Amini,Kianoosh G. Boroojeni,S. S. Iyengar,Panos M. Pardalos,Frede Blaabjerg,Asad M. Madni Pdf

This book paves the way for researchers working on the sustainable interdependent networks spread over the fields of computer science, electrical engineering, and smart infrastructures. It provides the readers with a comprehensive insight to understand an in-depth big picture of smart cities as a thorough example of interdependent large-scale networks in both theory and application aspects. The contributors specify the importance and position of the interdependent networks in the context of developing the sustainable smart cities and provide a comprehensive investigation of recently developed optimization methods for large-scale networks. There has been an emerging concern regarding the optimal operation of power and transportation networks. In the second volume of Sustainable Interdependent Networks book, we focus on the interdependencies of these two networks, optimization methods to deal with the computational complexity of them, and their role in future smart cities. We further investigate other networks, such as communication networks, that indirectly affect the operation of power and transportation networks. Our reliance on these networks as global platforms for sustainable development has led to the need for developing novel means to deal with arising issues. The considerable scale of such networks, due to the large number of buses in smart power grids and the increasing number of electric vehicles in transportation networks, brings a large variety of computational complexity and optimization challenges. Although the independent optimization of these networks lead to locally optimum operation points, there is an exigent need to move towards obtaining the globally-optimum operation point of such networks while satisfying the constraints of each network properly. The book is suitable for senior undergraduate students, graduate students interested in research in multidisciplinary areas related to future sustainable networks, and the researchers working in the related areas. It also covers the application of interdependent networks which makes it a perfect source of study for audience out of academia to obtain a general insight of interdependent networks.
