Electromagnetic Compatibility by Donald G. Baker Pdf
Explains and resolves the electromagnetic compatibility challenges faced by engineers in transportation and communications This book is a mathematically-rich extension of courses required to maintain the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and the European Union certifications. The text provides an in-depth study of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues related to specific topics in transportation and communications, including Light Rail Transit, shadow effects, and radio dead spots, through the analysis of real-world case studies in the United States and Europe. The author provides Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical solutions that can be applied to Maxwell's and Wave Equations. The book covers topics such as SCADA Systems, shielding, and complexities of radio frequencies and their effect on communication houses. The author also provides information for alternative industries to apply the solutions from the case studies and background content to their own professions. Presents a series of over twenty real-world case studies related to EMC in transportation and communications Covers power line radiation, shadow effects on subway cars, train control systems, and edge distortions Includes the OATS testing method and Department of Transportation (DOT) test Provides access to a companion website housing power point slides and additional appendices Electromagnetic Compatibility: Analysis and Case Studies in Transportation is a reference for practicing engineers involved in transportation and communications, as well as post-graduate engineering students studying transportation and communications in engineering.

EMI Troubleshooting Cookbook for Product Designers by Patrick G. André,Kenneth Wyatt Pdf
EMI Troubleshooting Cookbook for Product Designers is a one-stop guide that will help engineers and technicians who have products which fail to meet EMI/EMC regulatory standards. It provides "recipes" of simple, easily implemented, and inexpensive troubleshooting tools or aids that can be built by the engineer or the technician. Written in a very simple style requiring only minimal electromagnetic theory and math, the "cookbook" will teach the engineer and technician to develop a "process" for troubleshooting--making it a straight-forward approach to solving what may seem like a rather complicated problem. Real-world stories are used to further illustrate both the concepts put forth in the book and the thinking process required when troubleshooting EMI problems. All materials are organized around these main aspects in a logical way, providing accessible, useful, complete coverage of the main aspects of the mitigation/troubleshooting philosophy. The book's less technical approach and balanced coverage of both basic theory and practical aspects will provide guidelines on how to approach an EMI failure, things to try, choosing the appropriate component, to how to choose the right parts and balance between cost and performance.

Functional safety of machine controls by Hauke, M.,Schaefer, M.,Apfeld, R.,Bömer, T.,Huelke, M.,Borowski, T.,Büllesbach, K.-H.,Dorra, M.,Foermer-Schaefer, H.G.,Uppenkamp, J.,Lohmaier, O.,Heimann, K.-D.,Köhler, B.,Zilligen, H.,Otto, S.,Rempel, P.,Reuß, G. Pdf
The EN ISO 13849-1 standard, “Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems”, contains provisions governing the design of such parts. This report is an update of BGIA Report 2/2008e of the same name. It describes the essential subject-matter of the standard in its third, revised 2015 edition, and explains its application with reference to numerous examples from the fields of electromechanics, fluidics, electronics and programmable electronics, including control systems employing mixed technologies. The standard is placed in its context of the essential safety requirements of the Machinery Directive, and possible methods for risk assessment are presented. Based upon this information, the report can be used to select the required Performance Level PLr for safety functions in control systems. The Performance Level PL which is actually attained is explained in detail. The requirements for attainment of the relevant Performance Level and its associated Categories, component reliability, levels of diagnostic coverage, software safety and measures for the prevention of systematic and common-cause failures are all discussed comprehensively. Background information is also provided on implementation of the requirements in real-case control systems. Numerous example circuits show, down to component level, how Performance Levels a to e can be engineered in the selected technologies with Categories B to 4. The examples provide information on the safety principles employed and on components with well-tried safety functionality. Numerous literature references permit closer study of the examples provided. The report shows how the requirements of EN ISO 13849-1 can be implemented in engineering practice, and thus makes a contribution to consistent application and interpretation of the standard at national and international level.
Electromagnetic Compatibility in Railways by Ade Ogunsola,Andrea Mariscotti Pdf
A railway is a complex distributed engineering system: the construction of a new railway or the modernisation of a existing one requires a deep understanding of the constitutive components and their interaction, inside the system itself and towards the outside world. The former covers the various subsystems (featuring a complex mix of high power sources, sensitive safety critical systems, intentional transmitters, etc.) and their interaction, including the specific functions and their relevance to safety. The latter represents all the additional possible external victims and sources of electromagnetic interaction. EMC thus starts from a comprehension of the emissions and immunity characteristics and the interactions between sources and victims, with a strong relationship to electromagnetics and to system modeling. On the other hand, the said functions are achieved and preserved and their relevance for safety is adequately handled, if the related requirements are well posed and managed throughout the process from the beginning. The link is represented by standards and their correct application, as a support to analysis, testing and demonstration.
