Elementary Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by William Morris Davis Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the author's Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First Book of Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Ralph S. Tarr Pdf

Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Archibald Geikie Pdf

Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography While, therefore, adhering to a systematic treat ment, I have been led to dwell, for example, on the phenomena of the atmosphere at much greater length than is usual in elementary class-books. These 'phenomena are among the most familiar and uni versal features of the globe; examples of them can be constantly adduced, and they may thus be used with singular advantage to illustrate how the facts of science are observed and its laws are deduced. Questions in Geikie's Elementary Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Archibald Geikie Pdf

Excerpt from Questions in Geikie's Elementary Physical Geography With the view of aiding Teachers in the use of the Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography, I have prepared the following series of Questions. It is obviously desir able that as frequently as possible the question should be so framed that the au swer cannot be given in the mere words of the Lesson, but requires that the meaning of the paragraph to which it refers be first clearly apprehended. Much advantage will accrue from c0pious exercises upon the Maps, of which enlarged copies for use as diagrams Will be found serviceable. Ad vantage should likewise be taken of every opportunity of illustration from familiar or easily observable phenomena. Examples are given in the Lessons to show how this may be done (see, for instance, Lesson This method, to be adopted in every subject where it is admissible, may be carried into effect in oral teaching in a way which cannot of course. The progress made in this branch Of earth science during recent years has been so rapid that any text-book in which the modern aspects Of the science are presented must awaken many questions in the teacher's mind. It is with the desire to answer these questions that the following sug gestions and explanations have been written out. A num ber Of laboratory exercises are here outlined; but a. High School Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Grove Karl Gilbert Pdf

Excerpt from High School Physical Geography IN order to fit this work for use in Canadian schools, some changes have been made in the order of topics and in the subject-matter. For this revision the authors are largely indebted to Professor A. P. Cole man of the University of Toronto, who has given the volume the benefit of his intimate knowledge of the geography and geology of the Dominion, substituting in every chapter pertinent examples and discussions in place of material which would have special value only in the United States. New chapters have been added, dealing with rocks, with the physical history of Canada, and with matters of elementary astronomy. For the chapters dealing with astronomy Professor C. A. Chant of the University of Toronto is responsible. The study of rocks is introduced before the processes are taken up in detail, and the account of the earth's relations to the sun is transferred to a point near the end of the book. Suitable substitutions have been made in the maps and half-tone illustrations. Not withstanding, these changes, the volume distinctly keeps its identity, and is issued in its new dress in the hope that it may be useful in geographic instruc tion in the High' Schools, Collegiate Institutes and Academies of Canada. The authors are specially indebted to Professors Cole man and Chant, and to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for many of the illustrations used in this edition. Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Philip Lake Pdf

Excerpt from Physical Geography Certain preliminary matters which are often treated under the head of Physical Geography, but which do not properly belong to that subject, are omitted. It is assumed, for instance, that the reader understands the principles of the barometer and the thermometer, and that he has some acquaintance with the motions of the earth and the moon. But no one who has been through a general elementary course in science, such as is now given in most secondary schools, should meet with any difficulty. A few words as to the arrangement adopted may be of use, especially to teachers who may wish to know how far the book will be serviceable in their own classes. The book falls naturally into three sections dealing respectively with the atmosphere, the ocean and the land. Logically the study of physical geography may begin either with the atmosphere or with the land, and it is mainly a matter of convenience which of these courses should be followed. The two branches of the subject are to so large an extent independent that, if desired, the section on the land may be read before the section on the atmosphere. But the study of the atmosphere should always precede that of the ocean. In planning a course, however, there is one consideration that should be borne in mind. It is easy to arrange a useful series of laboratory lessons upon the atmosphere or the ocean; but in the case of the land comparatively little laboratory work is possible and the most valuable form of practical work consists of excursions in the field. Consequently there are advantages in dealing with the atmosphere during the winter months and with the land during the summer. But much depends upon the circumstances under which the course is given. Elements of Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Cramer Hopkins Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. New Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by Ralph S. Tarr Pdf

Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines.
