The dramas separate themselves naturally into those whose plots are taken wholly, or in part, from Italian novels; and those, like the first cast of Every Man in His Humour, that are thoroughly English in charac ter, but yet have an Italian setting, as though the author had judged that his play would please the audience of the Globe or the Blackfriars better, if its scene were laid upon the Rialto of Venice, or amid the stirring life of Florence. Excerpt from Elizabethan Translations From the Italian During the winter of 1891 - 92, I made a list of all English dramas produced between the accession of Edward VI, in 1549, and the closing of the theatres by the Parliamentarians, in 1642. My list showed that some fifteen hundred plays belong to the period of the great drama of the reigns of Elizabeth and James I, of which about one-half are extant. Of extant Eliza bethan dramas it set apart about one-third as Italianate; they are Italian in source, or plot, or scene, or general tone. Much has been written about Italian influences in Elizabethan litera ture, and lies scattered throughout English criticism of the last three hundred years. The small but influential community of Italians that took shape in England in the fifteenth century initially consisted of ecclesiastics, humanists, merchants, bankers and artists. However, in the wake of the English Reformation, Italian Protestants joined other continental religious refugees in finding Tudor England to be a hospitable and productive haven, and they brought with them a cultural perspective informed by the ascendency among European elites of their vernacular language. This study maintains that questions of language are at the centre of the circulation of ideas in the early modern period. Wyatt first examines the agency of this shifting community of immigrant Italians in the transmission of Italy's cultural patrimony and its impact on the nascent English nation; Part Two turns to the exemplary career of John Florio, the Italo-Englishman who worked as a language teacher, lexicographer and translator in Elizabethan and Jacobean England.
