Emotional Arenas by Mark Seymour Pdf

Based on the records of a murder trial that transfixed all of Italy in the late 1870s, this study makes use of a dramatic court case to develop a new paradigm for the history of emotions - the 'emotional arena'. Set in the decade following Italian unification, the context was one of notable cultural variety. An as-yet unexplored aspect of this was that the experience and expression of emotions were as variable as the regions making up the new nation. Through a close examination of the spaces in which daily lives, loves, and deaths unfolded - from marital homes to places of socializing and entertainment, to a Roman court room - Mark Seymour explores the way social 'arenas' are crucial to the historical development of emotional cultural rules. The narrative is driven by the failed marriage of a decorated but allegedly impotent Risorgimento soldier, his wife's scandalous affair with a virile circus artiste (who had a string of previous lovers), and the illicit new couple's murder of the hapless husband. Hundreds of witnesses - from local professionals to servants and even circus clowns - interviewed across the length and breadth of the peninsula, left their personal views on marriage, sexuality, and infidelity. These provide an extraordinary series of peepholes into little-known areas of the new nation's social fabric. A careful yet imaginative reading of the prosecution records, as well as contemporary newspaper coverage, allows reconstruction of the highly emotional experiences of all those touched by this extraordinary story. The result is a classic Italian micro-history with relevance for today's emotionally volatile times.

Emotional Intelligence by Ralf Schulze,Richard D. Roberts Pdf

The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) - the ability to perceive, express, understand, and regulate emotions - is still the subject of scientific debate despite its intuitive appeal and widespread popular interest in areas such as human resources, education, and organizational psychology. This book brings together leading experts from around the world to present their perspectives on the current status of EI. It covers theories of EI and assessment approaches in depth, as well as theoretical concepts and research findings on the antecedents and consequences of EI in occupational, educational, and clinical settings. The contributions provide an overview of the empirical evidence that supports (as well as contradicts) many common assumptions about EI and its relation to other forms of intelligence. The book thus reflects the diverse approaches to finding solutions for the still unresolved conceptual and empirical problems, and offers a critical appraisal of the current status of EI.

Emotional Labor in the Service Economy by Ronnie J. Steinberg,Deborah M. Figart Pdf

In today's service economy, many jobs require that applicants have a smiling face, helpful disposition and the ability to interact in a friendly manner with others. Or in the case of law enforcement or bill collecting, an employee can be required to be less friendly and more harsh in his or her interaction with customers or criminals. Jobs that require emotional labor typically necessitate contact with other people external to or within the organization, usually involving face-to-face or voice-to-voice contact, especially in service work. Emotional labor requires employees to give something of themselves to others with whom they have no ongoing personal relationship. Emotional Labor in the Service Economy, a special issue of THE ANNALS, discusses the many aspects of emotional labor in a variety of job settings and cross-disciplinary examples. Articles in this important issue highlight: · Emotional Demands at Work · Financial Penalty for Doing Caring Work · Psychological Consequences of Emotional Labor · Rules Regulating Emotional Displays in Jobs or Job Requirements Emotional labor has gained increased recognition as it grows to affect productivity and generates profit. This special issue of THE ANNALS is a valuable resource to researchers, scholars and professionals in all areas to provide insight into this important topic.
