But a third magic word gives him power beyond his wildest dreams, allowing him to escape. Struggling with his newfound abilities—and his feelings for Inos—he follows after her. With his faithful companions, Rap will find himself battling old enemies, fulfilling prophecies, and navigating the empire’s politics, forging his own destiny as one of the most feared men in the kingdom. “If it’s traditional fantasy adventure with a bit of nudge-nudge wink-wink you’re after, Dave Duncan is your go-to guy. ”—SFReviews.net “Duncan takes all the trusted fantasy ingredients, meticulously prepares them and brings them together with skill and relish. . . . Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare Pdf

Titus Andronicus is still regarded by many as a bad play of dubious authorship. Its adversaries have abhorred its apparently gratuitous violence and uneven verse. Since 1945, however, the play has increasingly been taken seriously in both the theatre and the study: the violence and cruelty it depicts were disconcertingly matched by the events of two world wars. Alan Hughes joins those critics who take the play seriously, arguing for its unity of theme and tone and its grim humour; this is the work of a brilliant stage craftsman, confident in his handling of space, movement, and verse. The critical account of the play's fortunes is integrated within a description of major modern productions. In addition Professor Hughes supplies a complete stage history and an appendix which explores how the play might have been performed at the Rose playhouse in London, which has recently been excavated.

Witching Hill by E. W. Hornung Pdf

E. W. Hornung's Witching Hill is a collection of short fiction tales. The stories are all intertwined with the idea that riddles and murders are the product of the "old man," the long-dead malevolent Lord Mulcaster. His eight unique pieces were serialized in Scribner's Magazine. The plot centers around strange occurrences on the Witching Hill estate, as well as the efforts of a plantation officer, Gillon, and a local, Delavoye, to manage it. It's worth noting that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's brother-in-law was E.W. Hornung. Each narrative takes set on the Witching Hill estate, which was created on the grounds of a rural estate that was once a hotbed of decadence and wickedness decades ago.

The Sarah Siddons Audio Files by Judith Pascoe Pdf

English actress Sarah Siddons (1755–1831) was an international celebrity widely acclaimed for her performances of tragic heroines. We know what Siddons looked like—an endless number of artists asked her to sit for portraits and sculptures—but what of her famous voice? In lively and engaging prose, Judith Pascoe journeys to discover how the celebrated romantic actor’s voice sounded and to understand its power to move audiences to a state of emotional collapse. The author’s quixotic endeavor leads her to enroll in a “Voice for Actors” class, to collect Lady Macbeth voice prints, and to listen more carefully to the soundscape of her own life. The Sarah Siddons Audio Files is the first full-scale attempt to address the importance of the voice in romantic culture. Bringing together archival discoveries, sound recording history, and media theory, the book shows how the romantic poets’ preoccupation with voices is linked to a larger cultural anxiety about the voice’s ephemerality. The Sarah Siddons Audio Files contributes to a growing body of work on the fascinating history of sound, and will engage a broad audience interest in how recording technology has altered human experience.

The Third Citizen by Oliver Arnold Pdf

Arnold argues that recovering the formation of political representation as an effective ideology should radically change our understanding of early modern political culture, Shakespeare's political art, and the way Anglo-American critics, for whom representative democracy is second nature, construe both.

The Culture of Violence by Francis Barker Pdf

'Culture' and 'violence' have always been regarded as antithetical terms. In The Culture of Violence, Francis Barker takes a different view. Central to his argument is the contention that, contrary to post-Enlightenment humanist, liberal and conservative thought, 'culture' does not necessarily stand in opposition to political inequality and social injustice, but may be complicit with the oppressive exercise of power. The book focuses on Shakespearean tragedy and on the historicism and culturalism of much present-day cultural theory. Barker's analysis moves dialectically backwards and forwards between these two moments in order to illuminate aspects of early modern culture, and to critique the ways in which the complicity between culture and violence has been occluded. Rejecting the tendency of both modernism and post-modernism to homogenise historical time, Barker argues for a genuinely new, 'diacritical' understanding of the violence of history.
