Employee Benefits and the Part-time Worker by Robert Frederick Campling Pdf

From the Abstract: This paper attempts to examine part-time employment from both a legal and economic perspective, looking at the extent of part-time employment, the compensation arrangements for part-time employees with particular emphasis on benefits other than wages, and the apparent inequities in these arrangements. The treatment of part-time workers under existing employment standards and collective bargaining legislation is reviewed and the potential impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is examined. Finally, the actual cost of prorating benefits for part-time workers or paying cash in lieu of benefits is examined within the framework of the model developed in 1982 by Reid and Swartz. Overall, the available data seems to indicate that these costs are not overly excessive.

Part-Time Work and Employee Satisfaction by Paula Müller Pdf

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Leadership and Human Resource Management - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Dresden, language: English, abstract: Is part-time work the key to happier families? Empirical findings on job-satisfaction and personal happiness of part-time workers. Over the last decades, there has been a large increase of women in jobs and hence an increase in dual earner households. Consequently, a significantly higher amount of stress and pressure on men and women has been observed as it is difficult to combine the duties at work and at home which can reduce the overall quality of life and threat the work-life balance. For many people part-time work can be a solution to this problem especially in industrial nations. By definition, an employee works part-time if he regularly works fewer hours than a comparable full-time employee. The number of hours varies from state to state and institution to institution. However, there has been an increase in part-time work also in traditionally full-time professions. In Europe about 32% of all women and 8% of men work part-time, though this rate is lowest in eastern countries and highest in northern and western countries. In the USA about 23% of employees work part-time. But does part-time employment really increase the personal and work satisfaction? Why is the satisfaction higher or lower and what are benefits and disadvantages of part-time work? Moreover, what determines the satisfaction in part-time arrangements apart from influences of work and personal life?

There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Working Part-Time by Barbara Warme,Katherina L. P. Lundy,Larry A. Lundy Pdf

The hiring of part-time and temporary workers has historically been a mechanism for adjusting imbalances between supply and demand in the labor market. The use of such workers has increased dramatically as technological changes have put a premium on flexibility, and as fringe benefits have come to constitute an increasing percentage of labor costs. Flexibility is sought not only by organizations, but also by individuals: students, women with children, disabled persons, and retirees all benefit by part-time opportunities. Part-Time Work discusses these opportunities, and the risk involved in employment which is sometimes underpaid and devalued, and from which movement to full-time positions is difficult. This volume represents the work of a cross-section of specialists in labor economics, industrial relations specialists, and social scientists who are engaged in research on the transformation of work in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Chapters focus on the structural aspects of part-time work, conditions under which such work is performed, constraints imposed on employers by official agencies, and expectations and attitudes of part-time workers rooted in a particular society. Part-Time Work will prove particularly useful to sociologists, labor specialists, and relevant government agencies, organizations, and unions.
