Being of Power by Baron Baptiste Pdf

We live in a world where we’re all about updating. We update our computers, phones, cars, careers—even our partners. Now it’s time to update your personal philosophy and view. In essence, it’s time to update you. Being of Power is about transforming relationships. Not just with others, but with yourself, your experiences, your work, your purpose—how you relate to everything in your life. Here you will find the tools to enable you to break through the limiting views that have been keeping you stuck, frustrated, and unfulfilled; expand your viewpoint to see new possibilities; and come into your authentic self. The nine practices in this book are the stepping-stones on the path back to your essential authenticity, which is where your greatest power lies. These are practices to put into action minute by minute, day by day. We don’t master them all at once; instead, we work them in each present moment, again and again, until eventually we come to embody them as a natural way of being. This is how we transform. The aim of this book is not to tell you "the truth," but rather to help you rediscover your own truth. Your deepest power comes from what you already know inside. You have the intelligence. You have the answers. The nine practices of transformation will simply allow you to dissolve the blocks standing in your way and access the wisdom that’s already within you. They will show you how to put your essentially powerful way of being into action so you can create new, expanded results in your life. At its core, this book is about connecting to your authentic self and rediscovering who you are and what’s possible.

The Power by Naomi Alderman Pdf

She throws her head back and pushes her chest forward and let's go a huge blast right into the centre of his body. The rivulets and streams of red scarring run across his chest and up around his throat. She'd put her hand on his heart and stopped him dead. Suddenly, girls find that with a flick of their fingers, they can inflict agonizing pain and even death. With this single twist, the four lives at the heart of this novel are utterly transformed, and we look at the world in an entirely new light. What if the power to hurt were in women's hands?

The Myth of Empowerment by Dana Becker Pdf

The Myth of Empowerment surveys the ways in which women have been represented and influenced by the rapidly growing therapeutic culture—both popular and professional—from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The middle-class woman concerned about her health and her ability to care for others in an uncertain world is not as different from her late nineteenth-century white middle-class predecessors as we might imagine. In the nineteenth century she was told that her moral virtue was her power; today, her power is said to reside in her ability to “relate” to others or to take better care of herself so that she can take care of others. Dana Becker argues that ideas like empowerment perpetuate the myth that many of the problems women have are medical rather than societal; personal rather than political. From mesmerism to psychotherapy to the Oprah Winfrey Show, women have gleaned ideas about who they are as psychological beings. Becker questions what women have had to gain from these ideas as she recounts the story of where they have been led and where the therapeutic culture is taking them.

Empowered Without Power by Kpughe Lang Pdf

This book examines women's participation in the executive structures of the Basel Mission and Presbyterian Church in Cameroon in order to tell a new story of women and church leadership. In 1886, the Basel Mission commenced mission work in Cameroon and successfully established an indigenous church which gained independence in 1957 as Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC). In both churches, women were underrepresented in the echelons of power owing to entrenched patriarchy and recourse to controversial empowerment. Female missionaries to Cameroon trained women in fields like motherhood, domestic science and marriage, which yielded little or no opportunities for local women to participate in the power structures of the Basel Mission. This patriarchal culture was handed down to the PCC, whose initial all-male authority ensured that the power structure was all-male. But growing feminism within the church and pressure from international ecumenical partners led to timid gender reforms which ended women's exclusion from the ordained ministry, promoted female eldership, led to the establishment of a convent, and the adoption of a gender inclusive policy. But women's dearth in positions of leadership persisted, with most executive structures filled by men. So, this book tells the story of women's involvement in the executive structures of the Basel Mission and Presbyterian Church in Cameroon. It is the first effort at a holistic approach to interpreting women's lack of power in these two churches. Based upon archival research and oral sources, the book tells the story of the people, forces and events that led to the consistent underrepresentation of women in the churches' echelons of power. The lived realities of women who challenged patriarchy and held leadership positions in the church are illuminated. It documents the reality of women's lack of power, with particular focus on the dilemmas of female pastors, elders, nuns, and female Christian groups.

Empowering the Indian City by Teri,The Energy & Resources Institute Pdf

All over India, the shortage of power is a reality that affects all walks of life, all kinds of people. Among its most tangible impacts is the shortage of electricity in the domestic sector. Despite the fact that India's capacity to generate power has grown from 1362 MW at the time of Independence to over 100 000 MW in 2001, there is still, on an average, an eight per cent shortfall. Each person in India can use about 350 kW of power every year, and this is among the lowest per capita averages in the world. Hours of load shedding, sweltering summers, and cold winters without enough power are all common experiences for the average Indian. Generators and inverters are fast competing with refrigerators and televisions as hot-selling consumer goods.'Empowering the Indian city: scenarios and solutions' is an attempt to bring into focus the various issues that confront development in the Indian power sector, with special reference to the urban power supply to the domestic sector. It puts forth a multitude of choices that exist before the Indian citizen, the government, and the industry to create a future where electricity can be a resource not so ridden by scarcity and bad quality. Many of us have often thought about what alternatives exist before us, other than buying a cost-intensive, polluting generator, or an inverter that will hike our electricity bills considerably. This concise book tries to list out a few ways of bridging this shortage by focusing on alternative energy sources, energy-efficient lighting, and governmental reform, which is already in the pipeline. It is a book not just about shortage of power. It is also about the theft of power, bad management practices in the sector and the misuse of power, faulty tariff systems, and low quality in what is supplied to the consumer as usable power. It is also about the future of power reforms in the country and which way they are headed.

Power, Empowerment and Social Change by Rosemary McGee,Jethro Pettit Pdf

This book uncovers how power operates around the world, and how it can be resisted or transformed through empowered collective action and social leadership. The stakes have never been higher. Recent years have seen a rapid escalation of inequalities, the rise of new global powers and corporate interests, increasing impunity of human rights violations, suppression of civil society, and a re-shaping of democratic processes by post-truth, populist and nationalist politics. Rather than looking at power through the lenses of agency or structure alone, this book views power and empowerment as complex and multidimensional societal processes, defined by pervasive social norms, conditions, constraints and opportunities. Bridging theory and practice, the book explores real-world applications using a selection of frameworks, tools, case studies, examples, resources and reflections from experience to support actors to analyse their positioning and align themselves with progressive social forces. Compiled with social change practitioners, students and scholars in mind, Power, Empowerment and Social Change is the perfect volume for anyone involved in politics, international development, sociology, human rights and environmental justice who is looking for fresh insights for transforming power in favour of relatively less powerful people.

Microcredit and Women's Empowerment by Aminul Faraizi,Taskinur Rahman,Jim McAllister Pdf

Using a case study of Bangladesh, and based on a long term participatory observation method, this book investigates claims of the success of microcredit, as well as the critiques of it, in the context of women’s empowerment. It confronts the distinction between women’s increasing wealth as a consequence of the success of microcredit programmes and their apparent non-commensurate empowerment, looking at two organisations (the Grameen Bank and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) as they operate in two localities in rural Bangladesh, in order to discover how enrichment and empowerment are often confused. The book goes on to establish that the well-publicised success stories of the microcredit programme are blown out of proportion, and that the dynamics of collective responsibility for repayment of loans by a group of women borrowers – usually seen to be a tool for the success of microcredit – is in fact no less repressive than traditional debt collectors. This book makes a contribution to development debates; challenging adherents to more closely specify those conditions under which microcredit does indeed have validity, as well as providing insights relevant to South Asian Studies and Development Studies.

The Psychology of Employee Empowerment by Rozana Ahmad Huq Pdf

The complexities of employee empowerment have been largely underestimated and it is clear that organisations struggle with putting the concept into practice. Rozana Ahmad Huq recognises that effective utilisation of human resources is a strategic issue for organisations. Hierarchical organisations struggle to survive. The growing trend for downsizing and merging of organisations means that they can no longer maintain the 'command and control' approach and employees are given more responsibility and expected to take decisions. However, simply burdening employees with extra responsibility without empowering them does not deliver results. Drawing on her own research in organisations, Dr Huq investigates the concept of empowerment in a new way that combines themes from the disciplines of management and social work, the latter being a domain where empowerment is an important construct. This helps to bridge the gaps in knowledge in the management domain and draws attention to the positive and negative psychological implications for employees of the practice of empowerment that are often ignored by leaders and managers. Ultimately, the author offers a 'practice model' to help people in management and non-management understand the new roles and behaviours that they need to adopt if empowerment is to become a reality. This book is a resource for any business or other organisation genuinely interested in employee empowerment and for those with a responsibility for teaching about it.

Smart Energy Empowerment in Smart and Resilient Cities by Mustapha Hatti Pdf

International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Renewable Energetic Systems, IC-AIRES2019, 26-28 November 2019, Taghit-Bechar, Algeria. The challenges of the energy transition in the medium term lead to numerous technological breakthroughs in the areas of production, optimal distribution and the rational use of energy and renewable energy (energy efficiency and optimization of consumption, massive electrification, monitoring and control energy systems, cogeneration and energy recovery processes, new and renewable energies, etc.). The fall in the cost of renewable energies and the desire for a local control of energy production are today calling for a profound change in the electricity system. Local authorities are at the center of energy developments by taking into account the local nature of certain energy systems, heat networks, geothermal energy, waste heat recovery, and electricity generation from household waste. On the other side, digital sciences are at the heart of connected objects and intelligent products that combine information processing and communication capabilities with their environment. Digital technology is at the center of new systems engineering approaches (3D modeling, virtualization, simulation, digital prototyping, etc.) for the design and development of intelligent systems. The book deals with various topics ranging from the design, development and maintenance of energy production systems, transport, distribution or storage of energy, optimization of energy efficiency, especially in the use of energy. innovation in the fields of energy production from renewable energies, management of energy networks: electricity, fluids, gas, district heating, energy storage modes: battery, super-capacitors , overseeing energy supply through supervision, control and diagnosis, risk management, as well as the design and management of smart grids: microgrid, smartgrid. Empowerment by Kenneth McLaughlin Pdf

‘Empowerment’ is a term in widespread use today and one that is often considered to be a self-evident good. Here, McLaughlin explores its emergence in the 1960s through to its rise in the 1990s and ubiquity in present day discourse and interrogates its social status, paying particular attention to social policy, social work and health and social care discourse. He argues that a focus on empowerment has superseded the notion of political subjects exercising power autonomously. This innovative volume: - Discusses the relationship between concepts of empowerment and power, as they have been understood historically. - Analyses changes in the conception and meaning of empowerment in relation to the shifting social and political landscape. - Acknowledges the positive impact empowerment strategies have had on those who have campaigned to be empowered and also on those who have saw their role as being to help empower others. - Highlights ways in which talk about empowerment can actually work in such a way as to further disempower those already marginalised. Critically examining how ‘empowerment’ has become embedded in contemporary social and political life, this work offers a discussion of the term’s multiple meanings, what it actually entails, and how it constructs and positions those being empowered and those empowering.

Radio and Women's Empowerment in Francophone West Africa by Emma Heywood Pdf

This open access book breaks new ground by examining the significant role played by radio in empowering women in three Francophone West African countries: Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. It examines the representation and perception of key themes broadcast by radio and associated with women’s empowerment in the three countries. Each chapter contextualises a specific topic in the country and then explores discrete aspects of radio’s provision. The topics covered in the chapters are women’s political engagement; women and finances; women and life within marriage; inheritance; women’s involvement in radio structures; and radio, internally displaced women, and trauma. Given the social, economic and political vulnerability and deteriorating security situation of the three countries, this book provides a timely and meaningful contribution to acknowledging and understanding the vital role of radio in women’s empowerment.

Empowering Ministry by Donald P. Smith Pdf

Over a period of years, Donald Smith probed, analyzed, interpreted, and reinterpreted data pertaining to what makes for effective ministry. Through all his research, one fact kept emerging: Pastors who focus on empowering others are recognized as the most effective in their ministry. Empowering Ministry distills the best information about cultivating an effective ministry stance from the voices of several hundred highly effective congregational leaders, offering readers the benefit of many lifetimes of pastoral experience. Smith deals extensively with how pastors empower others, as well as with how they have been and continue to be empowered themselves. He also discusses the requisite skills needed for motivating and energizing others. The book offers a realistic look at life in the ministerial pressure cooker and confronts the issues of stress and burnout. Specific steps the reader can take to grow and nurture an effective ministry are included. Empowering Ministry is for pastors who are enriching their work, for the seminary student preparing for ministry, and for anyone working closely with their pastors in a quest for maximum pastoral effectiveness.

Australia and France’s Mutual Empowerment by Paul Soyez Pdf

How did France and Australia develop a deep strategic partnership, when only about two decades ago, a group of Australians bombed the French consulate in Perth to protest against French nuclear testing in the Pacific? Which interests, which personalities, which elements of the global context have led France and Australia to engage in a regional and global rapprochement, and what have been the human, economic and political prerequisites which enabled it? This book aims to investigate the dynamics behind this historically ambiguous relationship. More precisely, this study explains why and how France and Australia are currently engaged in a process of strategic and economic mutual empowerment and how this rapprochement has been possible, owing to thirty years of diplomatic efforts to overcome ongoing culturally and historically constructed misunderstandings and conflicts. This book demonstrates how French and Australian foreign policy-makers have understood that, in regard to their numerous common interests, both countries had to mutually empower each other in order to strengthen their own power, regionally and globally. This book argues that these inclusive dynamics of empowerment constitute the response of two diverse middle powers to current global threats and represent a tool suitable for modernising the strategies and practices of both countries’ diplomacies. Soyez’ research is the first to propose an answer to these questions through the development of the French-Australian strategic partnership.
