Empowering Electricity by Julie L. MacArthur Pdf

Since the 1990s, there has been an upsurge in renewable electricity co-operatives across Canada as hundreds of community organizations have turned to the sun, wind, and rivers as sources of local power generation. Empowering Electricity offers an illuminating analysis of these co-operatives within the context of larger debates over climate change, renewable electricity policy, sustainable community development, and provincial power-sector ownership. It looks at the conditions that led to this new wave of co-operative development, examines their form and location, and shines a light on the promises and challenges accompanying their development.

Empowering People by Smita Nakhooda,Shantanu Dixit,Navroz K. Dubash Pdf

Policymakers, regulators, citizens, and the international community are grappling with the challenges of providing access to reliable and affordable electricity, and addressing major environmental challenges. After a decade of experimentation, it is now clear that the problem as well as the solution lies less in ownership of the electricity industry, and more in how the sector is governed. This research report makes the case for greater attention to governance of electricity - the processes, institutions, and actors that determine how decisions are made - in order to meet the challenges of sustainable energy. The findings show that, on the whole, policy and regulation are more likely to be successful if they are open to public scrutiny. The report is based on assessments of electricity governance in India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines that were completed in 2005 using the WRI-Prayas-NIPFP Electricity Governance Indicator (EGI) Toolkit as a common research methodology.

Empowering the West by Jay L. Brigham Pdf

Westerners were at the forefront of the debate over electric power development even before the construction of large, federally owned dams in the 1930s. At the heart of this debate was a conflict between public power advocates and the private utility industry over control of the environment, a struggle that was played out in the political arena. In this book, Jay Brigham describes that rivalry in the West in the years before the New Deal. Focusing on the conservative city of Los Angeles and its liberal counterpart Seattle - as well as on several small towns in the Midwest - Brigham shows how fierce battles broke out as private and public systems competed for customers and how, despite the differences between these two cities, public power ultimately triumphed in each.

Empowering Communities by Lacy K. Ford,Jared Bailey Pdf

Early in the twentieth century, for-profit companies such as Duke Power and South Carolina Electric and Gas brought electricity to populous cities and towns across South Carolina, while rural areas remained in the dark. It was not until the advent of publicly owned electric cooperatives in the 1930s that the South Carolina countryside was gradually introduced to the conveniences of life with electricity. Today, electric cooperatives serve more than a quarter of South Carolina's citizens and more than seventy percent of the state's land area, bringing not only power but also high-speed broadband to rural communities. The rise of "public" power—electricity serviced by member-owned cooperatives and sanctioned by federal and state legislation—is a complicated saga encompassing politics, law, finance, and rural economic development. Empowering Communities examines how the cooperatives helped bring fundamental and transformational change to the lives of rural people in South Carolina, from light to broadband. James E. Clyburn, the majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina, provides a foreword.

Empowering Communities by Lacy K. Ford,Jared Bailey Pdf

"... the critical role of the Palmetto State's electric cooperatives in bringing electricity to the rural population of the state and their ongoing efforts over decades to enhance the quality of life in the state's rural areas. From the moment the lights came on, South Carolina's electric cooperatives ushered rural South Carolina communities into the modern world by making labor-saving electric appliances and modern conveniences available to rural people, serving as a center of community experience, and, at the present moment, leading the effort to bring high-speed internet access to currently underserved rural citizens. The rise of electricity transmitted, delivered, and serviced by member-owned cooperatives and sanctioned by federal and state legislation is a fascinating and complicated saga, one that takes readers into politics, law, finance, business, territorial competition, the technology of electrical generation and transmission, and rural economic development. Ford touches on all of these issues in this short volume, but the focus will remain on the dramatic and continuing changes driven by the electricity and sense of community the cooperatives brought to farms and villages and towns across the state. Ford and Bailey explore how, across decades, the cooperatives helped bring dramatic, fundamental, and transformational change to the lives of rural people in South Carolina. To be sure, it was an era of dramatic change across much of South Carolina as ownership of automobiles and other modern improvements lessened the isolation of the countryside, but without question rural electrification changed the daily routines and life experiences of rural people-Black and White, men and women-repeatedly across the decades after the 'lights came on' in rural South Carolina. A final chapter will address the ongoing controversy of Santee Cooper, the state-owned electric utility which generates and sells over three-quarters of its electricity to one customer: South Carolina's electric cooperatives. James E. Clyburn, majority whip and the third-ranking Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, and a long-time supporter of electric cooperatives in South Carolina, provides a foreword"--

Electricity Reform Abroad and U.S. Investment by Anonim Pdf

This report reviews and analyzes the recent electricity reforms in Argentina, Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK) to illustrate how different models of privatization and reform have worked in practice. This report also analyzes the motivations of the U.S. companies who have invested in the electricity industries in these countries, which have become the largest targets of U.S. foreign investment in electricity. Two calculations of foreign investment are used. One is the foreign direct investment series produced by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The other is based on transactions in electric utilities of the three countries. The electricity reform and privatization experiences reviewed may offer some insight as to how the U.S. electricity industry might develop as a result of recent domestic reform efforts and deregulation at the state and national levels. 126 refs., 23 figs., 27 tabs.

Empowering Society by Usha Jumani Pdf

Empowerment is an integral element of a democratic system. The maturity of a democracy is directly related to the level of empowerment its citizens and institutions experience. The term 'empowerment' is used in different contexts and this book addresses this problem through a comparative analysis of three major organisational systems - business, government and social development. The book presents a new conceptual framework for understanding the process of empowerment. It combines case studies specially for this volume, with secondary data and the author's first hand experience of working with development organisations. The differential understanding of empowerment in various organisational contexts helps to promote cross-sectoral learning, and contributes to a qualitative shift in empowering society as a whole.

Sun Power by Neville Williams Pdf

America is on the brink of a green energy revolution that can save the planet, and increase peace and prosperity, by harnessing the unlimited solar power. After decades of promise, the technology for alternative energy solutions now exists to replace our dangerous addiction to fossil fuels with cheap, clean solar energy. Neville Williams has been on the leading edge of this revolution for decades and knows from firsthand experience how sun power can transform lives and communities for the better. He has traveled the globe bringing solar-generated electricity to struggling communities throughout Asia, Africa, India, and the developing world. From isolated villages high in the mountains of Nepal to remote settlements in South Africa, Williams has worked to bring sun power to even the most off-the-grid reaches of the planet. He has brought that knowledge and experience back to America where he founded one of the country's fastest growing solar companies. If millions of poor families in the Third World can get their power from the sun, why can't Americans concerned with their rising power bills, dependence on foreign oil, and carbon footprints do the same? The answer is that sun power is here, it works, and can light up a new era of economic and environmental security—if we have the will to seize this historic opportunity. This book is not about predictions or promises. It's about what's happening now, all over the world, and what still needs to done.
