Male Reproductive Function by Christina Wang Pdf

Male Reproductive Function gives an up-to-date review on the physiology and disease processes associated with the male reproductive system. The first few chapters describe the regulation of the functions of the testis and the integration of its components: germ cells, Sertoli cells and Leydig cells. This is followed by a description of puberty and aging, and the disorders or dysfunction that may be associated with these physiological processes. Discussions on the current methods for the diagnosis and treatment of male hypogonadism, male infertility and male sexual dysfunction follow, with detailed descriptions of types of androgen replacement and the benefits and risks of such treatment. The book concludes with the development of male contraception and the possible influence of the environment on the male reproductive system. Male Reproductive Function represents a conglomeration of the efforts of experts in andrology from all over the world, both in basic cellular/molecular biology as well as in clinical science and practice. This book is suitable for endocrinologists, urologists, general internists, gynecologists and other students in the field of male reproduction.

The Endocrine Function of the Human Testis by V. H. T. James,M. Serio,L Martini Pdf

The Endocrine Function of the Human Testis, Volume II, contains the papers that were given in the third and final part of the course of lectures on "The Endocrine Function of the Human Testis," held in Florence, 17-19 April 1973. The first two parts of the course, dealing with assay and metabolism of androgens, and with the regulation of testicular function, were published in Volume I. The present volume contains 16 contributions and begins with an analysis of steroid secretion by the testis in man. This is followed by studies on the temporal variation of testosterone and plasma gonadotrophins in man; interactions between steroids and gonadotropins; gonadotrophins and plasma testosterone in senescence; androgen secretion in male hypogonadism; and testosterone metabolism and action in testicular feminization syndrome. Subsequent chapters deal with male sexual precocity; "fertile eunuchism" (Leydig cells reduced in number and size with preserved spermatogenesis); male idiopathic hypogonadism associated with idiopathic hypothyroidism, and with idiopathic renal tubular acidosis; and the medical management and treatment of male hermaphrodites.

Male Hypogonadism by Stephen J. Winters Pdf

Recent advances in cellular and molecular biology have markedly increased our understanding of normal and abnormal hypothalamic–pituitary–testicular function. Like other volumes in the Contemporary Endocrinology series, the goal of Male Hy- gonadism: Basic, Clinical, and Therapeutic Principles is to link current knowledge of basic biology to the practice of medicine. The development of new methods for testost- one replacement has substantially increased the number of men who are seeking to determine whether they are hypogonadal, and who are using testosterone replacement therapy, thus mandating a broader understanding of testosterone deficiency. The chapters of this book were contributed by authors from around the world, and from various scientific and clinical disciplines, who have devoted their careers to the study of the physiology and pathophysiology of the male. Thus, this comprehensive and focused volume is intended for a wide audience encompassing both basic scientists and practicing clinicians. Its scope will provide a wealth of information for students and fellows as well.

Hormone Binding and Target Cell Activation in the Testis by Maria Dufau Pdf

It is curious that research in endocrinology has largely ignored the testis until quite recently. There were two impor tant reasons for this neglect; first, methods of study were difficult, and second, sperinatogenesis was considered to be the concern of the urologist or cell biologist but not the endocrinologist. Since it is now almost an ethical imperative that we develop a male contraceptive, and since a host of new techniques can be brought to bear on problems of testis function, research in male reproductive biology has effloresced. In fact, it has become possible to project aseries of workshops on the testis, each dealing with discrete aspects of biochemistry, physiology and pathology. It is fitting that this first Workshop should be on Binding and Activation, since this area is one of the frontiers in endocrinol ogy. At our present rate of progress it is probable that each of the succeeding workshops will likewise bring together leaders in a rapidly developing area. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has the major Federal respon sibility in reproductive biology, and has therefore agreed to sponsor this and succeeding workshops. On behalf of the Institute and for those members of the Committee who have organized this meeting, I welcome you. I am quite sure that this first Workshop on the Testis will initiate aseries of important contributions to scientific thought in male reproduc tive biology. Mortimer B. Lipsett, M. D.

The Pituitary and Testis by D.M. de Kretser,H.G. Burger,B. Hudson Pdf

This monograph brings together our work concerning the relationships be tween the hypothalamus, pituitary and testis. The studies span approximate ly a decade of collaborative work. Over this period our contributions and those of many others have advanced greatly our understanding of many aspects of male reproductive biology. This monograph attempts to survey these developments and to highlight many unresolved issues. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate the value of investigations which relate bio chemical to structural parameters and to illustrate the importance of animal studies in elucidating biological principles with clinical applications. The reverse is also important since the pathophysiology of human disorders of ten provides insight into hitherto unsuspected basic mechanisms. In any rapidly expanding field it is difficult to stop revising and extending a manuscript. It is equally difficult to quote every reference in the field but we trust that those of significance have not been omitted. Some of our former students have collaborated with us as co-authors in producing this monograph. It is equally important to recognise the contributions of our other former students and colleagues who have physically participated in the studies and without whose intellectual contributions a number of concepts would not have been elucidated. Their work is acknowledged in the text of the monograph and the extensive list of references.

Clinical Urologic Endocrinology by Parviz Kavoussi,Raymond A. Costabile,Andrea Salonia Pdf

Clinical Urologic Endocrinology: Principles for Men’s Health provides an organized, accessible reference on men’s endocrinological health. Over 30 million men in the US alone suffer from erectile dysfunction and over 13 million men in the US suffer from hypogonadism (low testosterone). One out of seven couples also suffer from subfertility of which 50-60% have male factor involvement. More and more men are coming forward to seek treatment for such issues, which in the past were considered taboo and there is a strong need for a book which provides guidance for practitioners who support men in their reproductive and sexual concerns. This book covers in depth the key issues in male reproductive health in one easy-to-use resource. Clinical Urologic Endocrinology: Principles for Men’s Health is a valuable reference for urologists, endocrinologists, internal medicine physicians, family medicine physicians, sex therapists, and allied health professionals providing care for men in the areas of sexual health, fertility, and men’s endocrinological health.

The Developing Testis by Olle Söder Pdf

The Developing Testis' is a complex site of various differentiation events resulting in two main functions in adult life - gametogenesis and androgen biosynthesis. Testis research is multidisciplinary in its nature and attracts both basic and clinical scientists. The purpose of this volume has therefore been to bring together a group of expert scientists in the fields of physiology, endocrinology, pediatrics and andrology to sum up our current knowledge on human testicular development, from the state of male sex determination to the end of puberty. The contents span from molecular events in male sex determination and testis differentiation to clinical entities such as the testis in childhood cancer, cancer in the testis and gonadotropin receptor mutations. Testicular descent and cryptorchidism are reviewed from the eyes of a pediatrician rather than from the traditional surgical view. Exciting recent developments in approaches to prevent male infertility after gonadotoxic cancer treatment in prepubertal boys are reviewed. The book addresses a wide readership among basic scientists, general pediatricians, endocrinologists, urologists, andrologists and others interested in the function of the developing male gonad.
