Energy Efficient Embedded Video Processing Systems by Muhammad Usman Karim Khan,Muhammad Shafique,Jörg Henkel Pdf

This book provides its readers with the means to implement energy-efficient video systems, by using different optimization approaches at multiple abstraction levels. The authors evaluate the complete video system with a motive to optimize its different software and hardware components in synergy, increase the throughput-per-watt, and address reliability issues. Subsequently, this book provides algorithmic and architectural enhancements, best practices and deployment models for new video systems, while considering new implementation paradigms of hardware accelerators, parallelism for heterogeneous multi- and many-core systems, and systems with long life-cycles. Particular emphasis is given to the current video encoding industry standard H.264/AVC, and one of the latest video encoders (High Efficiency Video Coding, HEVC).

3D Video Coding for Embedded Devices by Bruno Zatt,Muhammad Shafique,Sergio Bampi,Jörg Henkel Pdf

This book shows readers how to develop energy-efficient algorithms and hardware architectures to enable high-definition 3D video coding on resource-constrained embedded devices. Users of the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) standard face the challenge of exploiting its 3D video-specific coding tools for increasing compression efficiency at the cost of increasing computational complexity and, consequently, the energy consumption. This book enables readers to reduce the multiview video coding energy consumption through jointly considering the algorithmic and architectural levels. Coverage includes an introduction to 3D videos and an extensive discussion of the current state-of-the-art of 3D video coding, as well as energy-efficient algorithms for 3D video coding and energy-efficient hardware architecture for 3D video coding.

System-Level Design Techniques for Energy-Efficient Embedded Systems by Marcus T. Schmitz,Bashir M. Al-Hashimi,Petru Eles Pdf

System-Level Design Techniques for Energy-Efficient Embedded Systems addresses the development and validation of co-synthesis techniques that allow an effective design of embedded systems with low energy dissipation. The book provides an overview of a system-level co-design flow, illustrating through examples how system performance is influenced at various steps of the flow including allocation, mapping, and scheduling. The book places special emphasis upon system-level co-synthesis techniques for architectures that contain voltage scalable processors, which can dynamically trade off between computational performance and power consumption. Throughout the book, the introduced co-synthesis techniques, which target both single-mode systems and emerging multi-mode applications, are applied to numerous benchmarks and real-life examples including a realistic smart phone.

Energy-Efficient VLSI Architectures for Real-Time and 3D Video Processing by Michael Stefano Fritz Schaffner Pdf

Multiview autostereoscopic displays (MADs) make it possible to view video content in 3D without wearing special glasses, and such displays have recently become available. The main problem of MADs is that they require several (typically 8 or 9) views, while most of the 3D video content is in stereoscopic 3D today. To bridge this content-display gap, the research community started to devise automatic multiview synthesis (MVS) methods. Common MVS methods are based on depth-image-based rendering, where a dense depth map of the scene is used to reproject the image to new viewpoints. Although physically correct, this approach requires accurate depth maps and additional inpainting steps. Our work uses an alternative conversion concept based on image domain warping (IDW) which has been successfully applied to related problems such as aspect ratio retargeting for streaming video, and dispa- rity remapping for depth adjustments in stereoscopic 3D content. IDW shows promising performance in this context as it only requires robust, sparse point- correspondences and no inpainting steps. However, MVS, using IDW as well as alternative approaches, is computationally demanding and requires realtime processing - yet such methods should be portable to end-user and even mobile devices to develop their full potential. To this end, this thesis investigates efficient algorithms and hardware architectures for a variety of subproblems arising in the MVS pipeline.

Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing - EUC 2005 by Laurence T. Yang,Makoto Amamiya,Zhen Liu,Minyi Guo,Franz J. Rammig Pdf

Welcome to the proceedings of the 2005 IFIP International Conference on - bedded and Ubiquitous Computing (EUC 2005), which was held in Nagasaki, Japan, December 6–9, 2005. Embedded and ubiquitous computing is emerging rapidly as an exciting new paradigm to provide computing and communication services all the time, - erywhere. Its systems are now pervading every aspect of life to the point that they are hidden inside various appliances or can be worn unobtrusively as part of clothing and jewelry. This emergence is a natural outcome of research and technological advances in embedded systems, pervasive computing and c- munications, wireless networks, mobile computing, distributed computing and agent technologies, etc. Its tremendous impact on academics, industry, gove- ment, and daily life can be compared to that of electric motors over the past century, in fact it but promises to revolutionize life much more profoundly than elevators, electric motors or even personal computers. The EUC 2005 conference provided a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry, and government to address profound issues including te- nical challenges, safety, and social, legal, political, and economic issues, and to present and discuss their ideas, results, work in progress, and experience on all aspects of embedded and ubiquitous computing.

Real-Time Image and Video Processing by Nasser Kehtarnavaz,Mark Gamadia Pdf

This book presents an overview of the guidelines and strategies for transitioning an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment into a real-time constrained environment. Such guidelines and strategies are scattered in the literature of various disciplines including image processing, computer engineering, and software engineering, and thus have not previously appeared in one place. By bringing these strategies into one place, the book is intended to serve the greater community of researchers, practicing engineers, industrial professionals, who are interested in taking an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment to an actual real-time implementation on a resource constrained hardware platform. These strategies consist of algorithm simplifications, hardware architectures, and software methods. Throughout the book, carefully selected representative examples from the literature are presented to illustrate the discussed concepts. After reading the book, the readers are exposed to a wide variety of techniques and tools, which they can then employ to design a real-time image or video processing system.

Creating Fast, Responsive and Energy-Efficient Embedded Systems Using the Renesas Rl78 Microcontroller by Alexander G. Dean,James M. Conrad Pdf

Embedded microcontrollers enable products with sophisticated control, precise timing, low unit cost, low development cost, and high design flexibility. This book shows how to design and optimize embedded systems using the energy-efficient RL78 family of microcontrollers from Renesas Electronics Inc. The book is suitable for practicing engineers and both undergraduate and graduate classes on embedded systems. The first section of the book provides an introduction to developing embedded systems efficiently. - Basic microcontroller concepts - Processor core, instruction set architecture and interrupt system - Peripherals for digital and analog interfacing, serial communications, timing control, system robustness and acceleration, clock system control and low-power standby modes - Software development concepts including software engineering, development tool-chain, and compiler concepts The second section dives into optimizing embedded systems for three different goals. - Program speed depends on designing an efficient program and then helping the compiler generate fast object code. Execution time profiling finds the slow parts of the program quickly and guides speed optimization efforts. Examining object code helps determine if the compiler is working well enough. - Program responsiveness to events depends on the task scheduling approach and the use of preemption and prioritization. Real-time system analysis enables the calculation of response times and schedulability. - System energy efficiency depends on balancing a system's static and dynamic power consumption. A good design will trade off supply voltage, operating frequency, standby and shutdown modes to meet energy or power goals.
