English Literature and the Classics (Classic Reprint) by G. S. Gordon Pdf

Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. An Introduction to the English Classics (Classic Reprint) by William Peterfield Trent Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Classics The purpose of this book is to stimulate, in teachers and students alike, interest in the English Classics selected for use in schools, and to suggest various methods by which these masterpieces may be profitably studied. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them. The work of these collaborators has been brought into some uniformity of method, but Without injuring, it is hoped, the suggestiveness and variety and particular method of each contributor. A History of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Walter Swain Hinchman Pdf

Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. The Masters of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Stephen Gwynn Pdf

Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Tutorial History of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by A. J. Wyatt Pdf

Excerpt from The Tutorial History of English Literature The common complaint against smaller text-books of literature is that they include too much, and fail to pre serve due proportion between the greater and the lesser writers. In this book the lesser writers are mentioned, if at all, only incidentally; and the attempt has been made, in passing from one great writer to another, to give the history, as distinguished from the mere story, of English literature - to lay bare some of the more important aspects of the work of each author selected, while tracing the lines of development from writer to writer - in a word, to make an elementary book scientific, as far as the methods of science are applicable. In this task I have had no model before me to improve upon, and am more painfully aware, than any friendly reader or critic can be, of Shortcomings in its execution. In particular I have felt the difficulty of being consistent in difficulty: of avoiding the Opposite dangers of 'talking over people's heads' and childish simplicity. The former danger may be largely obviated if the student, before perusing each chapter, will read the English Classics recommended on. The Story of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Anna Jane Buckland Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of English Literature The earliest literature of this country was not written by the English people. Before our forefathers came over from the north of Germany, there was a people living in this island called the Kelts; and the remains of this race are still dwelling amongst us in the north of Scotland, in Ireland, and in Wales. The Kelts were divided into two great families - the Gaels, whose descendants are living in the Highlands and in Ireland, and the Cymri, who were the forefathers of the Welsh. All the Kelts have much power of imagination, and a keen sense of what is beautiful both in nature and life; they have quick feelings also, which are easily stirred to strong emotion, though there is a difference between the Gael and the Cymri in this respect, for while the Gael like to be moved to laughter and joy by what is lively and bright, the Cymri love to be touched to tears by what is pathetic and mournful; but both the Gael and the Cymri are readily stirred to intense enthusiasm by a heroic story of brave deeds and resolute conflict. If we were asked, what form of literature would such a race produce? we might answer at once - poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ancient Classics by W. Lucas Collins Pdf

Excerpt from Ancient Classics: For English Readers There is, however, a far more interesting question, to which we may yet be enabled to give an answer by a careful study of the Satires of J livenal, and that con sists in the consideration Of the gradual development of the high moral qualities with which our poet was endowed. We have elsewhere endeavoured to point out how we may trace the fierce and almost truculent satire of his youth gradually softening down to the gentler temper Of his mature years. In these he is not indeed blind to the vices of mankind; but, taking a larger and more philosophic view of human life, he is more anxious to point out how those vices may be re medied, by an earnest pursuit after virtue; and how God seldom fails in the end to reward the good for their righteous dealings, and to punish the wicked for their sins. Contemporary English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Mark Longaker Pdf

Excerpt from Contemporary English Literature The general bibliographies are arranged according to literary type, with subdivisions indicatedlin so far as they prove helpful. The reference works on poetry, for example, are subdivided into anthologies, biographical and critical studies, and discussions of poetic theory and principle. In the bibliographies of individual authors, the order of ar rangement is generally from comprehensi've treatment to the treatment of particular facets of the author's life and works. The chronologies of authors' works and the lists of biblio graphical items are often selective rather than exhaustive; and in the reference works, reviews and newspaper notices are not included. Only places of publication other than New York and London are listed in the bibliographies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Introduction to English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Henry S. Pancoast Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to English Literature Fifteen years ago, Mr. Henry Holt asked me to arrange a series of representative selections from English literature in chronological order, and to connect them with such biographical and historical matter as might be found necessary for an understanding of them, and of their relation to national and literary history. The result of this request was a book, Representative English Literature, which appeared in 1892. In this book, owing to the large proportion of space taken up by selections, the historical sketch was necessarily very brief, and a few years later, at Mr. Holt's suggestion, I prepared a second book, An Introduction to English Literature, based on the first, in which the selections were omitted and the historical outline revised and considerably expanded. Two years later this second book enlarged by the addition of further biographical and other matter. In the present book the subject is treated with still greater fulness but upon the same general plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Everyday Classics by Franklin Thomas Baker Pdf

Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Eighth Reader, the Introduction to Literature Book Eight of the Everyday Classics is an introduction to literature. In carrying out this purpose it completes the aim of the series, to put before the pupil selections which are both excellent and familiar, which form a valued part of the heritage of the nation and the race. In the earlier books, however, it has often seemed advisable to direct the attention to the heroes described, the stories told, and the morals enforced, rather than to a study of literary excellence. This book, more distinctly than any of its predecessors, is devoted to the study of literature. It seeks to encourage a knowledge and appreciation of the best that has been thought and imagined. The Seventh Book offered an account of the history and ideals of our own country as set forth by its chief authors. In the Eighth Book we go to the great masters of the world, and especially to those authors who from Shakespeare to Tennyson have been the glory of the English language. These two books thus complete the basic course in reading on the plan of the Everyday Classics, and they prepare the way for the more thorough study and appreciation of both American and English literature. They are especially adapted for use in Junior High Schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
