Guidelines for Evaluation of Environmental Health Services by Christina H. Drew,Xavier Bonnefoy,Jaco van Duivenboden Pdf

A practical guide to concepts, methods, and instruments for conducting an evaluation of environmental health services. Noting that managers frequently overlook the importance of evaluation, the book also performs a persuasive function, serving to illustrate the advantages of evaluation for purposes ranging from the justification of continuing expenditure to assurance that public health is being adequately protected from hazards in food, air or water. Throughout the book, examples of evaluations conducted in European countries are used to show how different approaches work to resolve specific practical problems. The book has six chapters. The first provides a general introduction to the purpose, principles and components of evaluation, as well as procedures that are frequently used. Chapter two applies these general principles to the specific setting of environmental health services, where process, impact, relevance, and adequacy of services may need to be assessed. Factors that make such services difficult to evaluate through traditional mechanisms are also briefly discussed. Against this background, a chapter on data and indicators provides detailed advice on the choice of indicators, concentrating on the use of process, environmental health, and urban indicators. Chapter four, on instruments for evaluation, outlines the strengths and weaknesses of several methods of data collection, giving particular attention to tools for economic analysis and qualitative evaluation. The remaining chapters cover the use of results in management decisions and set out five case studies of evaluations recently conducted in Europe.

Environmental Health Services in Europe 1 by Ian MacArthur,Ian Douglas MacArthur,Xavier Bonnefoy Pdf

This volume, apart from a brief comparison in the final chapter, is almost entirely descriptive. It therefore relies on examples from countries in the Region for the expansion and discussion of the various aspects of environmental health service delivery. It is clear that no two countries in the region have the same administrative structures or approach to environmental health services. Examples have been taken from all parts of the region where the surveys were carried out, and are used throughout in an ad hoc manner.

Clay’s Handbook of Environmental Health, since its first publication in 1933, has provided a definitive guide for the environmental health practitioner, or reference for the consultant or student. This 21th edition continues as a first point of reference, reviewing the core principles, techniques and competencies, and then outlining the specialist subjects. It has been refocused on the current curriculum of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Environmental Health but should also readily suit the generalist or specialist working outside the UK.

Healthcare Strategies and Planning for Social Inclusion and Development by Basanta Kumara Behera,Ram Prasad,Shyambhavee Behera Pdf

Healthcare Strategies and Planning for Social Inclusion and Development: Volume Two: Social, Economic, and Health Disparities of Rural Women examines rural women, particularly in developing countries, and how social and economic constraints they experience impact their ability to advocate for their own health and impede their access to healthcare. This volume discusses the economic and social barriers rural women confront in exercising their right to health care. It explains how geographical isolation, economic instability, healthcare provider shortages, lack of appropriate funding, resource limitations, and lack of health education are just few factors that make rural health care difficult. The book also covers the impact of social isolation on the health needs of rural women which include chronic diseases, mental health, and OB/GYN services as well as how the lack of opportunities for formal education restrict rural women from working outside the household. This volume will be a useful resource to graduate students in public and global health, public health professionals, health and social work researchers, and health policymakers interested in women’s health, especially in developing countries. Discusses health disparities of rural women in chronic diseases, access to pediatric and ob/gyn services, and mental health treatment Examines the health consequences of poverty and food insecurity on health Covers health care access and reproductive health outcomes for rural women

Tackling Environmental Health Inequalities in a South African City? by Rob Couch Pdf

South Africa is widely recognised as a middle-income, industrialised nation, but it also ranks amongst the most unequal countries in the world in terms of its income distribution and human development. Environmental health remains a considerable public health challenge in the 21st century as Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) try to tackle local environmental health inequalities in the face of historically disadvantaged populations suspicious of their motives and demands that far exceed any resources available. Based on an empirical research project that explores how local government Environmental Health Practitioners regulate environmental health in one of South Africa’s largest, fastest growing and most unequal cities, Urbington, this book explores the many influences on their decision-making including the limits of the law, organisational controls, the views of EHPs themselves and their relations with businesses, communities, politicians and others. Tackling Environmental Health Inequalities in a South African City? argues that if we are to meet the environmental health challenges of the 21st century, it is in our best interests to rediscover this vital local public health workforce. This book is essential reading for students, practitioners and policymakers in environmental health and public health, as well as those interested in urban development and policy, particularly in African cities.
