The gender pay implications of payment structures in three European countries, the UK, Italy and Germany, are explored through case studies of nine organisations. Payment practices are found to be embedded within country-specific employment systems and the detailed case studies reveal how different systems result in different levels and forms of gender pay inequality, affecting different groups of women workers. This exploration of payment practices at both the country and the organisation level reveals the variety of obstacles that still exist to the implementation of equal pay.
The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe by Hazel Conley,Donata Gottardi,Geraldine Healy,Barbara Mikołajczyk,Marco Peruzzi Pdf
The gender pay gap (GPG) exists in every European country, but it varies considerably, even in EU member states covered by the same legal principles on pay equality. Part of the variation can be explained by different patterns of social partnership. With current policy pressure to de-centralise collective bargaining and increase the percentage of pay linked to productivity, what role can social partnership play in tackling the GPG? Reporting on the findings of the European Commission funded research project "Close the Deal, Fill the Gap", this book uses an interdisciplinary analysis involving legal, economic, and sociological expertise, to explore the role of social partnership in GPG in Italy, Poland and the UK. Selected on the basis of their contrasting profiles in terms of legal regulation, industrial relations, systems of collective bargaining, coverage of collective agreements, and differing rates of the GPG, the in-depth study provides important insights into the main issues underlying the problem of reducing the gender pay gap which have led to guidelines in the negotiation of arrangements on GPG-related issues. Based on a unique comparative, interdisciplinary and action-oriented esearch project, it will be of great interest to all researchers and advanced students with an interest in women’s representation in the workforce and the gender pay gap, as well as practitioners and policy makers in organisations such as trade unions and employers’ associations.

Gender Inequality in the Eastern European Labour Market by Giovanni Razzu Pdf
Under communism there was, in the countries of Eastern Europe, a high level of gender equality in the labour market, particularly in terms of high participation rates by women. The transition from communism has upset this situation, with different impacts in the different countries. This book presents a comprehensive overview of gender and the labour market since the fall of communism in a wide range of Eastern European countries. Each country chapter describes the nature of inequality in the particular country, and goes on to examine the factors responsible for this, including government policies, changing social attitudes, levels of educational attainment and the impact of motherhood. Overall, the book provides an interesting comparison to the situation in Western developed countries, outlining differences and similarities. No one single Eastern European model emerges while, as in Western developed countries, a range of experiences and trends is the norm.
Eu Sex Discrimination Law and the Principle of Equal Pay by Anna Grasmik Pdf
Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,7, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Rechtswissenschaften), course: Advanced Lectures in EU Economic Law, language: English, abstract: The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, said in his speech on 8th March 2011 "Every day women in Europe experience one of the most deep-rooted injustices - being paid less than a man for work of equal value." Equality between women and men is one of the objectives of the European Union. With the aid of legislation, case law and amendments to the contracts it had gradually succeeded to give emphasis to this principle and apply it in the EU. This work will now try to show you this development. In the beginning, there will be a description of legal framework in the EU. This framework essentially bases on Article 157 TFEU and the Directive 2006/54. Afterwards follows the development of case studies by the jurisprudence of the ECJ in more detail. Keep on with the content of Article 157 TFEU with a closer look on the questions: What is pay? What is equal pay for equal work or work of equal value? When exists discrimination? What is the difference between direct and indirect discrimination? "Well come forward, but still long way to go": So the initial assessment of the agreement is to promote equal opportunities between women and men in the private sector. Is it right and more: is it enough? Let's see if this question can be answered at the end of this work.

Gender and Family in European Economic Policy by Diana Auth,Jutta Hergenhan,Barbara Holland-Cunz Pdf
This collection explores how pioneering gender equality policies have shaped women's economic presence in Europe since 2000. Equal pay policies, parental leave reforms, corporate quotas and electoral quotas have raised pressing questions about the effectiveness in promoting equal participation, as researchers quote both quantitative improvement in gender diversity and qualitative lag in cultural change. The chapters in this book present interlocking cross-national and cross-policy comparisons of the three most controversial reforms: equal pay, parental leave, and quotas for political representatives. The contributors address the cultural context in which reforms arose, internally contradictory policies, and the relative effectiveness of fast-track quotas and incentives compared to long-term efforts to change the overall culture of gender. This critical examination of the new millennium's groundbreaking gender policies will appeal to academics and practitioners interested in the progress of gender equality in the economic, political, and social welfare fields.
Women?s Quotas Under EU Equality Law by Katharina Radloff Pdf
The purpose of this study is to investigate legislation and leading cases concerning positive discrimination in the European Union, with a particular focus on the recent debate about the most radical positive action measure: the implementation of women?s quotas by supranational legislation. This study seeks to answer the question if such a radical derogation from the equal treatment principle can be tolerated, keeping in mind the fundamental character of this principle in European law. The concept of substantive equality will be analysed and set against the ECJ case law under review. It will be criticised that the ECJ focused once more on a formalist approach and allows for positive action measures only to a very limited extent. If the European Union would impose women?s quotas for board members via supranational legislation, would this still be considered as a measure of positive discrimination or would it rather be a form of negative discrimination against men?
