Some Problems on Nonlinear Hyperbolic Equations and Applications by Yuejun Peng,Bopeng Rao Pdf

This volume is composed of two parts: Mathematical and Numerical Analysis for Strongly Nonlinear Plasma Models and Exact Controllability and Observability for Quasilinear Hyperbolic Systems and Applications. It presents recent progress and results obtained in the domains related to both subjects without attaching much importance to the details of proofs but rather to difficulties encountered, to open problems and possible ways to be exploited. It will be very useful for promoting further study on some important problems in the future.

Perspectives in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations by Henri Berestycki Pdf

In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges.

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications X—Volume 2, Hyperbolic and Related Problems by Emmanuel Franck,Jürgen Fuhrmann,Victor Michel-Dansac,Laurent Navoret Pdf

This volume comprises the second part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023. The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. The first volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. This volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.

Applications of the Topological Derivative Method by Antonio André Novotny,Jan Sokołowski,Antoni Żochowski Pdf

The book presents new results and applications of the topological derivative method in control theory, topology optimization and inverse problems. It also introduces the theory in singularly perturbed geometrical domains using selected examples. Recognized as a robust numerical technique in engineering applications, such as topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing, multi-scale material design and mechanical modeling including damage and fracture evolution phenomena, the topological derivative method is based on the asymptotic approximations of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems combined with mathematical programming tools. The book presents the first order topology design algorithm and its applications in topology optimization, and introduces the second order Newton-type reconstruction algorithm based on higher order topological derivatives for solving inverse reconstruction problems. It is intended for researchers and students in applied mathematics and computational mechanics interested in the mathematical aspects of the topological derivative method as well as its applications in computational mechanics.

Recent Advances in Celestial and Space Mechanics by Bernard Bonnard,Monique Chyba Pdf

This book presents recent advances in space and celestial mechanics, with a focus on the N-body problem and astrodynamics, and explores the development and application of computational techniques in both areas. It highlights the design of space transfers with various modes of propulsion, like solar sailing and low-thrust transfers between libration point orbits, as well as a broad range of targets and applications, like rendezvous with near Earth objects. Additionally, it includes contributions on the non-integrability properties of the collinear three- and four-body problem, and on general conditions for the existence of stable, minimum energy configurations in the full N-body problem. A valuable resource for physicists and mathematicians with research interests in celestial mechanics, astrodynamics and optimal control as applied to space transfers, as well as for professionals and companies in the industry.

Polyhedral Methods in Geosciences by Daniele Antonio Di Pietro,Luca Formaggia,Roland Masson Pdf

The last few years have witnessed a surge in the development and usage of discretization methods supporting general meshes in geoscience applications. The need for general polyhedral meshes in this context can arise in several situations, including the modelling of petroleum reservoirs and basins, CO2 and nuclear storage sites, etc. In the above and other situations, classical discretization methods are either not viable or require ad hoc modifications that add to the implementation complexity. Discretization methods able to operate on polyhedral meshes and possibly delivering arbitrary-order approximations constitute in this context a veritable technological jump. The goal of this monograph is to establish a state-of-the-art reference on polyhedral methods for geoscience applications by gathering contributions from top-level research groups working on this topic. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers wishing to deepen their knowledge of advanced numerical methods with a focus on geoscience applications, as well as practitioners of the field.

The Virtual Element Method and its Applications by Paola F. Antonietti,Lourenço Beirão da Veiga,Gianmarco Manzini Pdf

The purpose of this book is to present the current state of the art of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) by collecting contributions from many of the most active researchers in this field and covering a broad range of topics: from the mathematical foundation to real life computational applications. The book is naturally divided into three parts. The first part of the book presents recent advances in theoretical and computational aspects of VEMs, discussing the generality of the meshes suitable to the VEM, the implementation of the VEM for linear and nonlinear PDEs, and the construction of discrete hessian complexes. The second part of the volume discusses Virtual Element discretization of paradigmatic linear and non-linear partial differential problems from computational mechanics, fluid dynamics, and wave propagation phenomena. Finally, the third part contains challenging applications such as the modeling of materials with fractures, magneto-hydrodynamics phenomena and contact solid mechanics. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and engineering fields, interested in learning novel numerical techniques for the solution of partial differential equations. It may as well serve as useful reference material for numerical analysts practitioners of the field.
