Mississippi by Anthony Walton Pdf

To most Americans, Mississippi is not a state but a scar, the place where segregation took its ugliest form and struck most savagely at its challengers. But to many Americans, Mississippi is also home. And it is this paradox, with all its overtones of history and heartache, that Anthony Walton—whose parents escaped Mississippi for the relative civility of the Midwest—explores in this resonant and disquieting work of travel writing, history, and memoir. Traveling from the Natchez Trace to the yawning cotton fields of the Delta and from plantation houses to air-conditioned shopping malls, Walton challenged us to see Mississippi's memories of comfort alongside its legacies of slavery and the Klan. He weaves in the stories of his family, as well as those of patricians and sharecroppers, redneck demagogues and martyred civil rights workers, novelists and bluesmen, black and white. Mississippi is a national saga in brilliant microcosm, splendidly written and profoundly moving.

Blues Musicians of the Mississippi Delta by Steven Manheim Pdf

The Mississippi Delta blues run as deep and mysterious as the beautiful land from where the music originates. Blues legends B.B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and countless other greats came from this region. The Delta blues, born as work songs in Mississippi cotton fields, was played on city street corners and in rural juke joints. With the Great Migration of African Americans in the first half of the 20th century, the Delta blues also made its way from Mississippi to Chicago. The sound of the blues would become the blueprint for the birth of rock and roll in Memphis in the 1950s. The era of the great Delta blues musicians is over, but their legacy remains an important chapter in American music. This book contains images of these important performers and the rich Delta landscapes that influenced their music.

Mississippi Escape! by Malcolm Balfour Pdf

Midnight, March 12, 1963. Mississippi State's president crouched low in the passenger seat, heading for the Alabama state line to escape from an injunction to keep the team home. In a second car, the athletic director and the basketball coach were fleeing for Tennessee. A team of decoys was heading to the airport the next morning. All this for a little ol' ballgame? There are those who call this "little ol' ballgame" the greatest victory for equality since Jackie Robinson joined the major leagues. Mississippi State's dramatic escape marked the end of the "Unwritten Law" and a profound change in what segregationists called "the Southern way of life." Right away, all major Southern universities began to actively recruit black athletes. This book is an eyewitness account of how a quiet-spoken university president defied the nation's most racist governor by engineering his team's escape from Mississippi to play in an integrated NCAA tournament, a move that would shatter segregation forever.
