The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III by Tim Carroll Pdf

The true story of one of the most heroic feats of World War II...the daring prison camp breakout that inspired the classic film The Great Escape Stalag Luft III was one of the Germans' "escape-proof" prison camps, specially built by Hermann Göring to hold Allied troops. But on March 24, 1944, in a courageous attempt by two hundred prisoners to break out through a series of tunnels, seventy-six Allied officers managed to evade capture -- and create havoc behind enemy lines in the months before the Normandy Invasion. This is the incredible story of these brave men who broke free from the supposedly impenetrable barbed wire and watchtowers of Stalag Luft III -- and who played an important role in Allied intelligence operations within occupied Europe. The prisoners developed an intricate espionage network, relaying details of military deployment, bombings, and raids. Some of them were involved in other daring escape attempts, including the famous Wooden Horse episode, also turned into a classic film, and the little-known Sachsenhausen breakout, engineered by five Great Escapers sent to die in the notorious concentration camp on Hitler's personal orders. Tragically, fifty of those involved in the Great Escape were murdered by the Gestapo. Others were recaptured; only a few made it all the way to freedom. This dramatic account of personal heroism is a testament to their ingenuity and achievement -- a stirring tribute to the men who never gave up fighting. Includes eight pages of photographs and illustrations, excerpts from Göring's testimony during postwar investigations, and a list of the men who escaped.

Escape to Darling Cove by Holly Hepburn Pdf

Perfect for fans of Cathy Bramley and Katie Fforde. Originally published as novellas, this paperback contains all fours parts of the story from irresistible beginning to heart-warming conclusion. Eve has always lived on Ennisfarne, an idyllic island just off the coast of Northumberland and only accessible when tides are low. There she runs a bar overlooking Darling Cove, a heavenly horseshoe-shaped beach named after her seafaring ancestors, whose links to the Farne Islands stretch back centuries. Logan is a famous photographer desperate to evade the limelight after a difficult break-up. Renting a cottage from Eve, he chooses Ennisfarne in the hope of anonymity but is immediately spellbound by its natural beauty. The pair don’t get off to the best start, butting heads over Eve’s adorable but boisterous Chocolate Labrador. But when Logan's true identity is revealed, Eve realises her new tenant isn’t quite the man she thought he was. Is it too late to start again or will Logan’s island escape be over almost before it’s begun? The brand new novel from Holly Hepburn, author of Coming Home to Brightwater Bay, will whisk you away to a sublime seaside retreat you’ll never want to leave.

My German Prisons by H. G. Gilliland Pdf

The writer has been so constantly and earnestly appealed to to write his experiences, and so weary recounting them, that he has at last decided to put into print a short account of things as they really happened within his own personal knowledge during his two and a half years’ imprisonment in Germany. He is also encouraged to do so for other and more important reasons. There are so many people throughout our Empire who are unfortunate enough to have intimate friends and relations in captivity in Germany. In the opinion of the writer these people ought to know, from one who has had a bitter experience, to which these pages will testify, the true conditions under which those nearest and dearest to them exist.

Random Ravings by Isaac Paul Ratnam Pdf

Born of a middle-class family, the author rose to eminence as a public prosecutor, migrated to a short-lived private practice, suffered ignominy, regained some measure of lost reputation, and thereby changed perspectives of living with grace and tolerance. In this book, he shares the experience of success, pain, loss, and the ability to not collapse in the face of challenging odds. The words and expressions are culled from the author’s experience. The views expressed in the book are entirely subjective and not a venting of failed frustrations but rather a desire to share and benefit others who may meet challenges in their life. The author shares his giddiness at success, his calmness in failure, his composure in loneliness, his joy in guiding his daughters, his ability to face unbearable situations, and eventually his preparedness to face his final departure from this theatre of joy, pain, satisfaction, and the people in his life.

Sun Warm You by Gene Baumgaertner Pdf

STORYLINE: The story is about a clan of The People, or hornbrows, as they refer to themselves. The clan is making its annual trek, along with the rest of a great herd, to the ancient nesting grounds. Along the way, two of the main characters get split off from the herd during an attack by a tyrannosaur-like predator. What follows is a series of adventures by characters remaining with the herd, and those forced to deal with the dangers of traveling without the protection of the herd. The former takes the reader through herd socialization, dominance fighting, nest-building, and the feeding and protection of the young. All of this moves through the actions and intrigues of several prominent characters: Grendaar the Groundshaker, the aging clan-leader, who must fight to retain his position and his life-long consort, the eternally beautiful Tessah the Wise ... Dandraar, the irrepressible youth, who half the time is engaged in adventures with his friends, and the other half is trying to find sense in the actions of adults ... and Adeldraar, highly placed leader of the herd, and sworn enemy of Grendaar's ... Add to this the adventures of a young pair trying to survive beyond the herd, while at the same time coping with the changes brought about by imminent adulthood. This part of the story follows several other main characters: Panthrar the Swift, the valiant and handsome adolescent, maturing to adulthood ... Pippit the True, the comely, budding young female who accidently gets thrown together with Panthrar ... Red-patch, the dreadrunner, a vicious tyrannosaur-like creature ... Thundermaker, the threehorn, the indomitable leader of a herd of Triceratops that fate throws the way of the young hornbrows ... and Savage, the dreadcharger, and his troop of deadly and relentless Tyrannosaurs. The story unfolds as Panthrar and Pippit constantly try to evade death, yet find time to fall in love, cope with nesting, and raise a brood of hatchlings in an often strange, and frequently hostile environment. The book comes complete with graphics, maps, and appendices. The appendices describe the characters, provide a glossary of terms, provide insight about the inhabitants of late Cretaceous North America, and elaborate on the setting for the story. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: Paleontological research and findings over the several decades have changed our perspective of what we know, and what we think we know, about dinosaurs. For example, it is pretty well established that at least some types of herbivorous dinosaurs (notably hadrosaurs and ceratopsians) traveled together in large herds, herds sometimes exceeding ten thousand individuals. And since they traveled in large groups, then it might be reasonable to expect that they developed a heightened social awareness. In other words, they would have developed some form of social structure, a hierarchy, or pecking order. They would have some form of communication, to protect territory, to signal if a predator threatened the herd, to make other simple wants known, and possibly for more complex purposes. It has also been discovered that more than one form of dinosaur nested in colonies. This is a not-too-surprising extension of the socialization of the herd. Along with these findings, it has been determined that many dinosaurs built nests, and that at least some of them tended the eggs in the nests, and fed and protected the young after they hatched. Some hatchling hadrosaurs were completely helpless for weeks after hatching, and someone, likely the mother and/or the father, had to gather food for them, and keep predators away from the nest. These were remarkable discoveries: socializing, nesting in colonies, and parenting. Other findings are still being hotly debated, although the general consensus is that dinosaurs were not stupid, sluggish, cold-blooded, and doomed to extinction. Were at least some dinosaurs warm-blooded? Were many dinosaurs swift and alert? Dinosaurs survived for over 140 million years (compared to a few million years for human-like creatures), and suppressed the development of mammals during that entire period. It was only after dinosaurs ceased to be, that mammals inherited the earth. A hundred and forty million years is a long time - so they were doing something right.

America at War by A. B. Feuer Pdf

Using previously unpublished diaries, letters, and photographs—plus the writings of war correspondent John T. McCutcheon—Feuer offers a vivid account of America's war in the Philippine Islands during the early part of the 20th century. This story highlights the experiences of the American soldiers, sailors, and marines who participated in the major battles. Not only did they fight a determined enemy, they also battled the weather, the jungle, and the diseases that threatened to take their lives. Their writings, including a section of poems and songs of the era, reveal the thoughts and anxieties of the American fighting man, serving his country nearly 8,000 miles from home. In 1895 Emilio Aguinaldo became the leader of Katipunan, a revolutionary society that sought complete independence from Spain. A year later, his ragtag band of soldiers defeated a Spanish regiment, a victory that incited the Filipino people to rise up against their oppressors. While the Spanish ultimately paid Aguinaldo to enter voluntary exile, in 1898, after the sinking of the ^IMaine^R, the United States would promise independence for the islands in exchange for Aguinaldo's return to lead an uprising against Spain. The U.S. State Department would later repudiate this promise, a move that would embroil United States troops in a bloody struggle to subdue the islands. This is their story.
