Essays in a Series of Letters (Classic Reprint) by John Foster Pdf

Excerpt from Essays in a Series of Letters Perhaps it will be thought that pieces written so much in the manner of set com positions as the following, should not have been denominated Letters; it may therefore be proper to say, that they are so called because they were actually addressed to a friend. They were written however with an intention to put them in print, if, When they were finished, the writer could persuade him self that they deserved it; and the temper of even the most inconsiderable pretenders to literature in these times is too well known for any one to be surprised that he could so persuade himself. Rosamund Gray by Charles Lamb Pdf

Excerpt from Rosamund Gray: Essays and Letters It was noontide. The sun was very hot. An old gentlewoman sat spinning in a little arbour at the door of her cottage. She was blind and her grand-daughter was reading the Bible to her. The old lady had just left her work, to attend to the story of Ruth. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law but Ruth clave unto her. It was a passage she could not let pass without a comment. The moral she drew from it was not very new, to be sure. The girl had heard it a hundred times before - and a hundred times more she could have heard it, without suspecting it to be tedious. Rosamund loved her grandmother. The old lady loved Rosamund too; and she had reason for so doing. Rosamund was -to her at once a child and servant. She had only her left in the world. They. Two lived together. Letters From Solitude by Filson Young Pdf

Excerpt from Letters From Solitude: And Other Essays And first let me tell you why I am here, at the western extremity of Ireland, miles and miles from anything in the shape of a village, where, unless I fish for trout, there is nothing for me to do and no one for me to speak to. A certain amount of solitude is necessary to the soul's health, but one too easily loses the art of being alone; I lose it very quickly. The life of any metropolis soon engenders in me a kind of panic terror of being bored, which means that in this state of disease one is bored if one is alone. So every minute is filled up, wisely or unwisely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Essays and Letters Contributed to Various Periodicals Between September 1877 and August 1879, Together With Some Unpublished Fragments (Classic Reprint) by Leonard A. Montefiore Pdf

Excerpt from Essays and Letters Contributed to Various Periodicals Between September 1877 and August 1879, Together With Some Unpublished Fragments Saturday; but he did not care to pass the day in idleness and soon began to cast about for some means of turning his leisure to the advantage of others. The means suggested to him, - a weekly visit to the workhouse, to talk with and entertain the old people there - seemed very unattractive. He himself confessed that there was hardly any way of spending his time which he would not have pre ferred. But it was difficult to discover any kind of usefulness which was not work, and therefore pro hibited. Besides, here was an opportunity for much unpretentious kindness, and that was enough for him. And it was highly characteristic of him that he very soon became interested even in these old men. They told him the stories of their lives, and with his keen sympathy for all modes of human fortune he detected many an element of humour or poetry in what to most men would have seemed utterly vulgar and commonplace. His visits which at first were a mere duty soon became also a plea sure. But whether agreeable or otherwise, they were always regularly paid, for he never played at doing good. Miscellaneous Essays and Letters (Classic Reprint) by Thomas R. Hazard Pdf

Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays and Letters Previous to the war with Mexico, the United States had never acquired or claimed a foot Of Mexican territory, other than that included in the new State of Texas. The claim Of Texas to all the disputed territory rested alike oii the same foundation. She had never acquired possession, or exercised jurisdiction over an inch of land lying on the Rio Grande, from its mouth to its source. Her Only title to any part Of it was a legislative enactment, which she purposed to en force by future conquest, but which She never effected. It consequently follows, that, if previous to the war with Mexico, the Rio Grande was the southwest boundary Of the United States, as as serted by the President and Congress, it must also have been the boundary of the State Of Texas when admitted into the Union.
