Essays in Miniature (Classic Reprint) by Agnes Repplier Pdf

Excerpt from Essays in Miniature To read with all the satisfaction in our pow er, and with a Simple surrendering of ourselves to the pleasure which has no peer. There are so many things to be considered now besides pleasure, that we have well-nigh abandoned the effort to be pleased. In the first place, it is necessary to keep up with a decent pro portion of current literature, and this means perpetual labor and speed, whereas idleness and leisure are requisite for the true enjoyment Of books. In the second place, few of us are brave enough to withstand the pressure which friends, mentors and critics bring to bear upon us, and which effectually crushes anything like the weak indulgence Of our own tastes. The reading they recommend being generally in the nature Ofa corrective, it is urged upon us with little regard to personal inclination; in fact, the less we like it, the greater our apparent need. There are people in this world who always in sist upon others remodeling their diet on a purely hygienic basis; who entreat us to avoid sweets or acids, or tea or coffee, or whatever. Essays in Miniature by Agnes Repplier Pdf

Excerpt from Essays in Miniature There is a short paragraph in Hazlitt's Conduct of Life that I read very often, and always with fresh delight. He is offering much good counsel to a little lad at school, and when he comes to a matter upon which most counselors are wont to be exceedingly didactic and diffuse - the choice of books - he condenses all he has to say into a few wise and gentle words that are well worth taking to heart: "As to the works you will have to read by choice or for amusement, the best are the commonest. The names of many of them are already familiar to you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Miniature Essays by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR Pdf

Excerpt from Miniature Essays: Igor Stravinsky It is almost impossible to-day to consider the work of Igor Stravinsky with the detachment that is the first requisite of a judicious appreciation, and to avoid taking part in the violent controversy to which it has given rise, a controversy that is in itself a testimony to its vitality, for Stravinsky's music is so characteristic an expression of the artistic tendencies of our time that even those who most dislike it cannot pass it by in silence. It is perhaps hardly paradoxical to assert that fundamentally all the critics agree as to its significance, and that they differ merely in the point of view from which they regard it. Print and Protestantism in Early Modern England by Ian Green Pdf

In this highly innovative study, Ian Green examines the complete array of Protestant titles published in England from the 1530s to the 1720s. These range from the large specialist volumes at the top to cheap tracts at the bottom, from radical on one wing to conservative on the other, and from instructive and devotional manuals to edifying-cum-entertaining works such as religious verse and cautionary tales. Wherever possible the author adopts a statistical approach to permit a focus on those works which sold most copies over a number of years, and in an annotated Appendix provides a brief description of over seven hundred best selling or steady selling religious titles of the period. A close study of these texts and the forms in which they were offered to the public suggests a rapid diversification of both the types of work published and of the readerships at which they were targeted. It also demonstrates shrewd publishers' frequent attempts to plug gaps in a rapidly expanding market. Where previous studies of print have tended to focus on the polemical and the sensational, this one highlights the didactic, devotional, and consensual elements found in most steady selling works. It is also suggested that in these works there were at least three Protestantisms on offer an orthodox, clerical version, a moralistic, rational version favoured by the educated laity, and a popular version that was barely Protestant at all and that the impact of these probably varied both within and between different readerships. These conclusions shed much light not only on the means by which English Protestantism was disseminated, but also on the doctrinally and culturally diffused nature of English Protestantism by the end of the Stuart period. Both the text and the appendix should prove invaluable to anyone interested in the history of the Reformation or in printing as a medium of education and communication in early modern England.

Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays Collected and Republished The labours and merits of Heyne being better known, and more justly appreciated in England, than those of almost any other German, whether scholar, poet or philosopher, we can not but believe that some notice of his life may be acceptable to most readers. Essays and Miscellanies (Classic Reprint) by Leigh Hunt Pdf

Excerpt from Essays and Miscellanies The Indicator, a series of papers originally published in weekly numbers, having been long out of print, and repeated calls having been made for it among the booksellers, the author has here made a selection, comprising the greater portion of the articles, and omitting such only as he unwillingly put forth in the hurry of periodical publication, or as seemed otherwise unsuited for present publication, either by the nature of their disquisitions, or from containing commendatory criticisms now rendered superfluous by the reputation of the works criticised. The author has little further to say, by way of advertisement to these pages, except that both the works were written with the same view of inculcating a love of nature and imagination, and of furnishing a sample of the enjoyment which they afford; and he cannot give a better proof of that enjoyment, as far as he was capable of it, than by stating, that both were written during times of great trouble with him, and both helped him to see much of that fair play between his own anxieties and his natural cheerfulness, of which an indestructible belief in the good and the beautiful has rendered him perhaps not undeserving. Modern Essays (Classic Reprint) by Christopher Morley Pdf

Excerpt from Modern Essays IT had been my habit, I am now aware, to speak somewhat lightly of the labors of anthologists: to insinuate that they led lives of bland sedentary ease. I shall not do so again. When the publisher suggested a collection of representative contemporary essays, I thought it would be the most lenient of tasks. But experience is a fine aperitive to the mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Miscellaneous Essays (Classic Reprint) by Thomas de Quincey Pdf

Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays From my boyish days I had always felt a great perplexity on one point in Macbeth. It was this the knocking at the gate, which succeeds to the murder of Duncan, produced to my feelings an effect for which I never could account. The effect was, that it reflected back upon the murder a peculiar awfulness and a depth of solemnity; yet, however obstinately I endeavored with my understanding to comprehend this, for many.
