Engaging the Spirit by Robert Boak Slocum Pdf

"For too long the Holy Spirit has tended to be either disregarded or the object of fanatical exclamation in the life of the church, especially in western Christianity," writes general editor Robert Boak Slocum in his introduction to this stimulating collection of eighteen essays from a broad spectrum of noted authors. "The essays in this collection give attention to many ways of the Spirit's life and activity--for salvation and healing, for making Christ present in our lives and in the church, for empowering our prayers and liturgies, for our inspiration and gifting, for transformation of the way we live, for the redemption of the world and the ultimate coming of God's kingdom, for the unity of our relationships with each other and God. . . . As we recognize the Spirit's activity in our traditions and doctrines, our prayers and liturgies, and in all aspects of the life we live, we may be better attuned to the leading of the Spirit into the future of faith and our life in God." Engaging the Spirit was first published as a special Summer 2001 edition of the Anglican Theological Review, and is dedicated to the late Charles P. Price, theologian and professor at Virginia Seminary. A posthumously published essay by Dr. Price is a fitting and unique addition to the collection.

God of Holy Love by Peter Taylor Forsyth Pdf

The God of Christian faith is, according to Peter Taylor Forsyth, a God of holy, righteous love. As a result, God's intervention in human life is morally robust, being in search of the transformation of its recipients toward holy love. Its high point is in the cross of Jesus Christ. This book contains twenty of Forsyth's essays that clarify the nature and manifestation of God's holy love. Forsyth contends that God is an active personal agent who desires interpersonal fellowship with humans, under the authority of divine holy love. He attends to the experience of God in moral conscience, where one can experience forgiveness and redemption by God. He challenges readers to consider whether their experience includes an encounter with a God who manifests holy love.

Sanctity and Motherhood by Anneke Mulder-Bakker Pdf

Increasingly, recent scholarship has focused on those married women and mothers in the Middle Ages who achieved holiness. The Merovingian Waldetrudis and Rictrudis; Ida, mother of the crusader king Godfrey of Bouillon; Elisabeth of Hungary and Bridget of Sweden are among them. Unlike Mary and her mother, Saint Anne (mother saints, whose sanctity was based on motherhood) these female parents were honored despite rather than because of their children. They were holy mothers, whose status as spouses and mothers gave them a public voice and opened for them the road to sanctification. They successfully combined marriage and motherhood with a religious life and functioned as holy women in their community. Despite increasing respect, tension between the roles of saint and wife persisted. Saintly women were not expected to be happily married: the ancient prejudice against sexual passion and physical ease mitigated the enjoyment of married life. The book's original essays focus on Northern Europe, where the cult of Saint Anne reached its climax around 1500. It does not explore Church doctrine and theology, as other studies do, but examines the religious experience of historical holy mothers and saints and how these women were perceived by their communities and their biographers.

The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul Pdf

Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.
