A further selection of the Chroniques of Guy de Maupassant by Guy de Maupassant Pdf

Oxford, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Frankfurt/M., New York, Oxford, Wien. This second selection of Maupassant's chroniques, edited in their original French version, includes articles on a wide range of subjects. Many are on literary, artistic or social themes, some are inspired by political events of the day. In general, some of the lighter pieces have been chosen, but in all of them Maupassant has something important to say. Maupassant often uses his chroniques to rehearse themes and topics to be developed later in short stories or novels. It is true that he never sought to re-publish them after their initial appearance in Le Gaulois, Gil Blas, or Le Figaro, but this is not to say that he did not reveal much about his inner self in these writings. Though he sometimes referred to them disparagingly as an irksome weekly obligation, he continued to offer his chroniques to the Parisian dailies when fame and fortune ensured that he had little need of the extra income they brought in. He wrote almost as many chroniques as short stories - indeed the distinction between the two genres is not always clear - and, whether the tone is facetious, serious or ironic, one can sense that Maupassant enjoys this dialogue with a regular readership. Readers or critics who ignore the journalism deprive themselves of a significant part of his overall output. This second selection shows once again that Maupassant the short-story writer and novelist was also an entertaining and observant chronicler of events in the France of his day. Contents: A selection of Maupassant's chroniques published in the French press in the 1880s - Notes explaining references and allusions - A short introduction to the chroniques withan evaluation of the importance of the journalistic writings - A bibliography of critical works relating to Maupassant's writings in the press.

The Very Best Of Guy De Maupassant by Guy Maupassant de Pdf

Guy de Maupassant was a prolific writer of short stories. He has articulately painted a fascinating picture of French life in the 19th century through his writings. He made his debut as a poet and later, went on write 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. Maupassant was a passionate lover of the sea and rivers, which accounts for the setting of much of his fiction and the prevalence in it of nautical imagery. He presents his characters dispassionately, foregoing any personal moral judgment on them but always noting the word, the gesture, or even the reticence that betrays each one's essential personality, all the while enhancing the effect by describing the physical and social background against which his characters move. Concision, vigour, and the most rigorous economy are the characteristics of his art. Collected Novels by Guy de Maupassant Pdf

Bel Ami (The History of a Scoundrel): The story chronicles journalist Georges Duroy's corrupt rise to power from a poor ex-NCO to one of the most successful men in Paris, most of which he achieves by manipulating a series of powerful, intelligent, and wealthy mistresses. The novel is set in Paris in the upper-middle class environment of the leading journalists of the newspaper La Vie Française and their friends. Pierre et Jean - is a naturalist or psycho-realist story, notably so by the subjects on which it treats, including knowledge of one's heredity (whether one is a legitimate son or a bastard), the bourgeoisie, and the problems stemming from money. Notre Coeur (A Woman's Pastime): The novel tells the story of a woman without a heart, frigid and probably a lesbian. The hero, facing this fascinating and awesome being, takes another mistress, who can hardly satisfy him. He is devastated by this passionate love, violent, melancholic and cruel. A Life is a satirical novel about the folly of romantic illusion. The novel tells the story of young Jeanne, full of hope and dreams of love, who discovers the outside world after finishing an education in a convent. She is looking forward to her new life and she is dreaming of the day when she will find the man who loves her. All her expectations are fulfilled, however... Mont Oriol Strong as Death
