Trekking in Austria's Zillertal Alps by Allan Hartley Pdf
Guide detailing four short Alpine hut-to-hut treks in the stunning Zillertal region of the Austrian Tirol. Included are the 9-day Zillertal Rucksack Route (also known as the Berliner Hohenweg), the 7-day Zillertal South Tirol Tour, the 7-day Peter Habeler Tour and the 6-day Olperer Runde Tour, as well as optional ascents of neighbouring peaks, including the region's highest, the 3510m Hochfeiler. Good fitness and experience of mountain walking is necessary, and some of the treks include long days, steep and uneven terrain and aided sections. The optional excursions may call for specialist equipment, mountaineering skills and experience of glacier crossing. The routes are presented in day stages, each with notes on the particular highlights and challenges/hazards of the day's route. In addition to clear route description illustrated with 1:50,000 mapping and elevation profiles, the guide also includes a wealth of practical information on transport, mountain huts, recommended kit and safety. Since the welcoming huts of the Austrian Alpine Club are a particular highlight of the area, there is also a comprehensive hut directory listing all of the huts, with information on facilities, access and their fascinating history. Appendices contain useful contacts, a German-English glossary and further reading.
Preventing Fatal Incidents in School and Youth Group Camps and Excursions by Andrew Brookes Pdf
This book approaches the prevention of fatal incidents in outdoor education and related fields through detailed study of past tragedies. Although safety in many fields is built on accumulated lessons from past incidents, tragedies on school or youth group camps and excursions are so infrequent and so widely scattered that knowledge from previous incidents can elude those who would benefit. Nevertheless, the emergence of unlearned lessons from the past weighs heavily when those affected by a tragedy judge whether an incident should have been prevented. This book provides a foundation for a detailed and comprehensive understanding of fatality prevention in outdoor education, and in youth camps and excursions. It compiles, examines, and analyses information on fatal incidents that have occurred over many decades, involving many kinds of groups and endeavours, from around the globe. No previous work has attempted this task.
Implications of Open Access Repositories Quality Criteria and Features for Teachers’ TPACK Development by Rita Tavares,António Moreira Pdf
This brief will explore how open access repositories are being developed and maintained, in order to provide, disseminate and promote the development of digital educational resources. The main objective is to analyse open access repositories quality criteria and features, and how these can improve teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) development. It is organized in six major sections. Section one addresses an historical overview of open access repositories. In section two the authors present the objectives and the methodology used in the present study. Sections three, four and five analyse namely (i) the prevalence of European Science Education open access repositories and teachers’ perceptions of those same repositories, (ii) the most common European Science Education open access repositories features and their implications, and (iii) the impact of open access repositories usage on teachers’ TPACK development. The last section focuses on the analyses of a selected open access repository [House of Sciences (originally Casa Das Ciências)], addressing its characteristics and features, the impact of social media features in digital educational resources (re)use, and the relationship between repository quality criteria and teachers’ TPACK development.

Author : Michael Jackson Publisher : Duke University Press Page : 325 pages File Size : 42,6 Mb Release : 2007-10-24 Category : Social Science ISBN : 9780822390640
A village in Sierra Leone. A refugee trail over the Pyrenees in French Catalonia. A historic copper mine in Sweden. The Shuf mountains in Lebanon. The Swiss Alps. The heart of the West African diaspora in southeast London. The anthropologist Michael Jackson makes his sojourns to each of these far-flung locations, and to his native New Zealand, occasions for exploring the contradictions and predicaments of social existence. He calls his explorations “excursions” not only because each involved breaking with settled routines and certainties, but because the image of an excursion suggests that thought is always on the way, the thinker a journeyman whose views are perpetually tested by encounters with others. Throughout Excursions, Jackson emphasizes the need for preconceptions and conventional mindsets to be replaced by the kind of open-minded critical engagement with the world that is the hallmark of cultural anthropology. Focusing on the struggles and quandaries of everyday life, Jackson touches on matters at the core of anthropology—the state, violence, exile and belonging, labor, indigenous rights, narrative, power, home, and history. He is particularly interested in the gaps that characterize human existence, such as those between insularity and openness, between the things over which we have some control and the things over which we have none, and between ourselves and others as we talk past each other, missing each others’ meanings. Urging a recognition of the limits to which human existence can be explained in terms of cause and effect, he suggests that knowing why things happen may ultimately be less important than trying to understand how people endure in the face of hardship.
