Europe Unbound (Classic Reprint) by Lisle March Phillipps Pdf

Excerpt from Europe Unbound This war is different from other wars. All wars imply the existence of an inward antagonism, an antagonism of will, ideas, ambitions, leading up to the outward antagonism of act. But it has usually been the case that these inward antagonisms, the real sources of war, have rarely been vital or permanently important to mankind at large. Mostly they have been antagonisms of kings or ministers, and have embodied state jealousies and ambi tions more or less irrelevant to the national welfare. Hence when a certain amount of blood had been spilt and the available ready money squandered there was nothing to prevent a peace being patched up. The peace might not mean a reconciliation of the interests involved, but those interests being usually trivial, it mattered not whether they were reconciled or not. The national life grew past them, grew over them the march of humanity left them far behind, so that the historians who by and by review those events seem to be wandering amid the ashes of extinct volcanoes. But what if the inward antagonism does not pass, what if it is not only profound and irreconcilable, but permanent? In that case obviously there is not much use in discussing peace, for however much we discussed it we could not realise it. Even if we arranged terms and signed treaties and sheathed our swords, we Should not have made peace so long as the inward discord remained operative. We might cover over the fire, but the flame would burn within. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories of Persons and Places in Europe This suggests that the many things which young people need to know about the countries of the world, could be gained more easily from illustra tive stories than from condensed statements of bare facts. And numerous stories of this kind are to be found stored away in volumes uninteresting to most young readers and inaccessible to all but a few. Europe After 8 by H. L. Mencken Pdf

Excerpt from Europe After 8: 15 The scene is the brow of the Hunger-berg at Innsbruck. It is the half-hour before sunset, and the whole lovely valley of the Inn - still wie die Nacht, tief wie das Meer - begins to glow with mauves and apple greens, apricots and silvery blues. Along the peaks of the great snowy mountains which shut it in, as if from the folly and misery of the world, there are touches of piercing primary colours - red, yellow, violet - the palette of a synchromist. Far below, hugging the winding river, lies little Innsbruck, with its checkerboard parks and Christmas garden villas. Heart of Europe (Classic Reprint) by Ralph Adams Cram Pdf

Excerpt from Heart of Europe And in all these places, and by all these men (and elsewhere, endlessly, and by hands un numbered), two thousand years had wrought their visible manifestation in abbey, church, and cathedral; in manor and palace and castle, in trade hall and civic hall, and in library and semi nary and school. Wars, great and small, have swept it from river to river, but much has been free for a cen tury and all of it free for forty years. Under every oppression and every adversity it has thriven and grown rich, not in material things alone, but in those commodities that have ac tual intrinsic value; and a short year ago it was the most prosperous, peaceful, and industrious quarter of Europe. Whatever the war, however violent the opposing agencies, its priceless rec ords of architecture and other arts were piously or craftily spared, except when the madness of the French Revolution swept over its convents and cloisters, leaving Coxyde, Villers, St. Bavon, St. Jean des Vignes, the Abbaye des Lys, dead witnesses of the faith that had built them and the spared monuments as well. And now a thing calling itself the highest civilisation in Europe, with the name of God in its mouth, again sweeps the already well-swept land. In defiance of Peace Palaces and Con ferences; in spite of the bankers of the world and their double-knotted purse-strings; in spite of a socialism that said war Should not happen again, and an evolutionary philosophy that said it could not happen again (men now being so civilised), the world is at war, and the old arena of Europe flames as at Armageddon, while those things too sacred for pillage and destruction by the armies and the commanders of five centuries are given over to annihilation in order that the peril of the Slav, on the other side of Europe, may not menace the treasured civilisation of the West, whose vestiges even now are blazing pyres, or cinders and ashes! Nineteenth Century Europe and Britain (Classic Reprint) by Raymond Beazley Pdf

Excerpt from Nineteenth Century Europe and Britain In the opening paragraphs of the book itself I have summarized certain conclusions and suggestions which have helped to guide me. Instead of inserting geographical sketches and plans, necessarily rather meagre on a small page, I would refer readers to the more excellent way of consulting such a handy, scholarly, inexpensive, and altogether admirable map-collection as Robertson and Bartholomew's Historical Atlas of M odem Europe, 1789-1914 (oxford.
